The Tedeschi Trucks band is unlike anyone else on the scene today. With last year's "Revelator", Susan Tedeschi and Derek gave us twelve originals (thirteen counting the hidden track "Ghost Light") where songwriting was the key, Susan's vocals and guitar embellished by Derek's masterful slide. Every member of the eleven piece band was integral to success of course, but the overall vibe was romantic and song oriented. With "Live", the band stretches out on every track, much like Derek Trucks Band's "Live at the Georgia Theatre".
The best albums always grab you from the start. The title track, a 1969 hit for Harry Nilsson, opens with a catchy guitar riff, reminiscent of Warren Haynes' "Man in Motion". Susan has made this song her own with her impassioned reading. "Midnight in Harlem" has a couple of surprises- a "Swamp Raga Intro" is followed by the opening notes to Duane Allman's "Little Martha". The crowd roars its approval before "Harlem" kicks in.
"Learn How to Love" is a well written original with Susan yearning of "tired of living without/ when others have so much/ if I could find someone/ to bring that lovin' touch", but the real treat here is the guitar interplay between this talented couple. Most fans are aware of Derek's abilities, but Susan matches her husband note for note on this workout.
The Elmore James classic "Rollin' and Tumblin'" is updated, again featuring both guitars and the keyboards of Kofi Burbridge. The tandem drumming of Tyler Greenwell and J.J. Johnson, along with bassist Oteil Burbridge push the band into the tough "Nobody's Free", another original. John Sebastian's "Darling Be Home Soon" is a surprising cover, but Tedeschi Trucks have proven they can reinvent anything put in front of them.
"That Did It" is the Pearl Woods composition made famous by Bobby Bland. I've seen Susan live and she has always delivered as a singer, but I've never heard her with the grit she displays here. The background vocals of Mike Mattison and Mark Rivers are perfect support for Susan. Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" is another great cover featuring saxophonist Kebbi Williams, trombonist Sanders Sermons and trumpeter Maurice Brown, who gets the spotlight with an extended solo. Both drummers get to stretch out, and Oteil displays his bass chops while scat singing which is his trademark when performing with the Allman Brothers.
"Love Has Something to Say" from "Revelator" segues nicely into Bill Withers'"Kissing My Love", featuring the vocals of trombonist Sermons. Derek plays one of his best solos of the disc on this track.
"Wade in the Water" takes us to church, where Susan and company sing the gospel with reverence. Derek answers each verse with understated slide. while Kofi Burbridge rides above it all on flute. You can't help but see the light.
These shows were recorded over three late October nights in Toronto, Washington D.C. and Bridgeport, Connecticut. Coincidentally, the Bridgeport show was recorded on the fortieth anniversary of Duane Allman's passing. It's almost as if Duane passed the torch to Tedeschi Trucks- and they're holding it high.
OK, the disc arrived today. It does not make me happy to say this, but I guess I am underwhelmed. So many of the songs are familiar from Revelator and I think I will continue to prefer the studio versions. Does anyone else think the band sounds "tired" ?? I really love Bound for Glory and was impressed by Derek's guitar work, but in the extended version it felt kind of muddy; I get a feel of jazz influence in parts that I wouldn't have expected. It seems like some of the keys have been dropped a step or so, maybe the touring took a toll on Susan's voice?
Sadly, I don't think I'll be listening to this much; still love the earlier versions.
Trucks has always been a proponent of allowing audience members to freely record his performances. With as many high-quality audience recordings of concerts as there are, this album really needed to meet a high standard to justify being sold s a commercial product, and it delivers. The recording quality is phenomenal. Even if it wasn't, I'd have purchased the album to support some of my favorite musicians, but even casual fans will find this album a worthwhile addition, despite the presence of so many free audience recordings of various shows.
I'd give this album five stars, except for a few issues of personal preference. The Tedeschi Trucks Band's musical style is a little narrower than I'd like. The Derek Trucks Band, which seems to be inactive while this band is active, had a much broader musical range, which I found much more fulfilling as a listener (but which doesn't really fit Susan Tedeschi's style). Tedeschi Trucks Band is great, especially for those who love straight blues performances, but I lament the fact that the band doesn't allow Trucks to use and demonstrate the full spectrum of his amazing talent. It also saddens me to see Mike Mattison shuffled into the background. He's a brilliant vocalist, and his addition to the Derek Trucks Band really turned them into a complete band (prior to Mattison, they had various guest vocalists and touring vocalists, but there was no stable voice for the band). Tedeschi has a wonderful voice, too, and as the band's co-leader, it makes sense that she's the primary lead vocalist, but I'd like to see them feature Mattison on lead vocals at least more often than one half of one song per concert. For these issues of personal preference, my review comes down to four stars.
