I was quite wrong.
This is a multiplayer game that very few people play regularly. There's a lot of servers, but most of them are filled with bots. The few servers that don't have bots might have 10 people in it and I only found 3 - 4 servers that weren't filled with bots. So if you're going to buy this be aware that not many people play it. If I had known that, I wouldn't have purchased this before.
The multiplayer itself is... Alright. The gameplay is decent, just imagine quake 3 in a sort of battlefield 2 environment with more objective based gameplay and you basically have this. In fact this is VERY much like battlefield 2.
The audio in this game is very quake like (Which you would probably expect with a game with the words "quake" in it). But don't expect to be blown away by the sounds or music, it's nothing extraordinary, most of the guns sound like some sort of cheesy laser weapons from bad 80's sci-fi shows.
The visuals aren't that great, I remember when this game first came out and they looked pretty good but it's really showing it's age now. But the great thing is you don't need a very fast computer to play this, so if your computer is a few years old and you don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a new video card, proc, etc you don't really have to worry about running this (Unless your computers absolutely ancient). There are options you can change, thankfully. You can change the details, effects and what not so if you're computer is having problems running it, then you can tone things down to make it a little faster.
A big gripe with me about this game, for me, is the animations. The animations aren't smooth at all, like for instance if you select a weapon, like your pistol, and your character pulls it out it's very choppy and it's like that for everything. Every weapon and action you do basically, even if you go to aim down the sights of your rifle, or pistol, still very choppy. It doesn't really effect gameplay it's just slightly annoying to me.
There is no single player to speak of. There's an award system and ranking system and it is very much like battlefield 2. If you kill a certain amount of enemies, do a certain task, etc. You can get awards for it however they're not all very easy. Some of them want you to get something like 10,000 kills, you get the idea. You can rank up in this game and it stays with your account, it's not reset per game like Crysis. So if you level up to a corporal, sergeant, etc. It stays with you.
It's also quite hard to tell whos friend from foe, at least... When you first start playing. I was teamkilling quite a bit but that's because from a distance most of the units look VERY similar. So that might become a problem especially if you're playing online and you accidentally tk a few times, if you're playing with bots, it's not a problem. But if you're playing on one of the few servers that have people and you get kicked or banned because of it, then that can prove to be quite a problem.
There's different classes in the game like battlefield 2. With the assault class you can pick more specialized classes, like whether or not you have a rocket launcher, a rifle, etc. All the classes have at least 2 different variants. It's basically just different loadouts. Like with the sniper class, you can have a sniper rifle or a scoped assault rifle. With a medic, you can have a shotgun, or a smg.
There's 2 different sides in this game, theres the Strogg and then there's the GDF (humans). The two sides are kind of similar but there are differences. For instance, the strogg don't really have ammo. It's just kind of this energy for their weapons. The medics on the strogg side can turn a GDF's body into a spawn point, etc etc. They do play differently but it's not exactly apples and oranges. Which can be a good thing, to have some continuity in the game.
All in all, if you're looking for a game to play to kill some times, maybe play with some friends on lan and dont have $2,000 computers to play the latest games and just want a cheap game that maybe you can play with bots and have basically, a quake version of battlefield 2 then this is kind of what you might want to check out.
However, that being said.. There are better games out there that are around the same price.
This one I believe is geared more for network and online matches.
It's an old game, not a lot of players left, and it has its' faults, but there's still a lot of great fun to be had with it, and a lot of great ideas went into it.
I've had tons of fun with it, and wish there were more players, but everyone who reads this review and buys a cheap copy can help out with that!
It's been a few months since I've played...been busy, but I'll list a couple of things that I can remember.
Pros: Lots of gameplay variety, good class separation, cool weapons and vehicles
Cons: Some of the maps are lopsided, virtually guaranteeing 99% wins for one team every time....but those maps are still fun to play, especially if you like a hardcore challenge. Also, large deployable items (weapons, radar, etc) are very limited on the deployable locations, in some cases yielding only a couple of choices, or effective choices. It basically means that deployables can be found in almost the same locations every time.....but, it's still fun.
Bottom line, snag it, and have some fun! Oh yeah, the taunts are funny, which always makes things more fun! :D And you know, it's almost worth $10 just to see and fly the Strogg 'bug'.......very neeto!
