Traditional RPG Adventure Spanning 3 Worlds
15 years after its initial console release in Japan, the final chapter in the popular Dragon Quest Zenithia saga and sequel to Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest V is remade for DS players in North America in Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation. In this epic journey the Real world, the Dream world and the mysterious Dread Realm are yours to explore as you and your allies regain your lost memories, realize your physical and magical powers and abilities and use them to confront the many problems caused by the evil Murdaw, in an attempt to save your world.
Gameplay
Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation like other releases in the series is a single player turn-based RPG featuring random battles and a deep character class system. Action revolves around the adventures, general combat and boss battles faced by the player's hero and comrades that the hero adds to his party in his travels throughout the various worlds/realms present in the game. Success in these endeavors drives the game's story forward, allows for the accumulation of experience points, mastery of initially available character classes, access to additional classes and exciting new spells and abilities. Success against certain enemies also allows for the co-opting of their strength as they are persuaded to join the cause of the quest. Additional features include: "Wagon" functionality that allows the player to retain acquired characters until the player chooses to swap them out for any of the currently played characters, improved graphics, Slime Arena and other mini-games and more.

This is, at it's core, a turn-based JRPG, and a reasonably fun one at that. I'm not really blown away by the storyline but it's interesting enough to pull me along without tugging. I've had some minor difficulties remembering where I need to go here and there but I think it speaks highly of the dialogue that if I sit and think it out for a moment, I can remember directions received from my various visits. So it's obviously not boring me completely. But it's not riveting by any means - standard stuff.
I've put in some heavy hours on the game and have grown tired of the random encounters made while traveling. I don't mind grinding in my RPGs but I don't particularly enjoy being forced to do so every 5-10 seconds while I'm traversing the landscape. Fights pop up constantly and they're a surprise. The ground is blank and you just get sucked into battle. Not that this is unique, but I do prefer the battle system in, say, Dragon Quest IX where I can see the enemies and aim at the ones I'd WANT to fight. But this isn't a huge gripe, just one that's starting to get a little frustrating. (Some people are attracted to this type of confrontation exactly and I get that, it's just not for me.)
The music got old quickly and is starting to grate on my nerves. I'm at the point where I need to go in and check my options to see if I can turn the soundtrack down by itself, but something tells me that's not possible in this game. This, though, isn't a huge gripe either because I can just lower the volume all together and call it a day. (But man, I love the laser sound this version makes when you win a battle. If I could just hear THAT!)
The other complaint, and likely the last, is that costume/armor/weapon customization isn't applied to the on-screen characters. They're rocking the same gear throughout the game regardless of what they're equipped with. New equipment makes a difference, clearly, but you don't get to see it ON.
I'd also like to note that the fight sequences are of the older variety. Contact is initiated and a group of enemies is lined up on your screen. You pick your actions and the attack happens without any animation from your heroes. Just a jolt, a slash, a fireball, and a vibrating-to-vanishing kill. So, if you're looking for some more exciting actions from your heroes, I'd go with a more current DQ game. But if you're looking for speed, (and believe me, after your 1000th fight, you won't care how it looks), this is a great way to go at it.
In the end, this isn't a terribly difficult game but it is time consuming and houses its share of challenges. There are two worlds to explore and plenty of battles to keep you leveling along nicely. Considering the prices I'm seeing here, I strongly recommend adding it to your JRPG library.
And I thank you for your time.
