J.Cole stays true to his craft. No rudimentary random bars over a hot beat, random punchlines with no meaning, etc... J.Cole stays true to his lane, in his art of story telling. As far as 1st albums go, its not a classic but its definitely worth the listen. Songs like "Lights Please" speaks of his struggle to open the eyes of people (females) but their interest lies in more intimate matters. "Lose Ones" speaks of a story between a couple and the subject of abortion in general. You have songs like "Dollar and a Dream III" that is upbeat but still he does not lack in his verses. But of course you have your radio hits like "Can't get Enough" feat. Trey Songz and "Work Out". Jay-Z makes an appearance in the album as well as Trey Songz, Drake, and Missy Elliot. Before I forget, J.Cole also produced most of his tracks.
The negative as far as the album goes is that some songs are reused that has previously been in his mixtapes. In my opinion "Lights Please" was worth reusing but I could have done without listening to "In the Morning" again. Also I feel like J.Cole could have had a better debut album. Don't get me wrong it has been in constant rotation and play for me but I know he is capable of even better material. I am definitely excited to see how his career goes and excited for the release of his sophomore album.
Usually there are 2-3 tracks in a given album that I like enough to make part of my work out or listen to as I drive. This album has about 10! No joking. The beats are some of the most creative and hard hitting that I have heard in a long time. Lyrically J.Cole is good, but not great, but the beats and overall production more than makes up for it. I should say, however, that J.Cole does bring it lyrically on a few tracks.
Warning, I have noticed that the iTunes version of the album has two extra songs that the physical and amazon mp3 album do not have, Daddy's Little Girl and Who Dat. Both are great songs and should be heard.
I think the pressure was on J Cole to make some classic album and he could never live up to that. Its a good first album- but not a classic first album like many of the greats make (50, Kanye, Jay Z, Nas...). But I still think Cole has a bright future especially if he swallows his pride and takes some (better) beats from other producers.

OMG ...Jermaine Cole did not disappoint. From start to finish WOW!...i been waiting for this album for a long long time and it was worth the wait. This man is truly talented . He produced damn near the whole album! People need to give him props for the production too.
He takes us on a journey..He takes us on HIS journey...and if u are like me you have been following this journey..for a while now. The Come Up...The Warm Up......Friday Night Lights ....all this time we been waiting on the album. Jermaine Cole tells us a story of how you work so hard to make it to the `league' (signed) ..then you STILL gotta prove yourself in order to get off the bench and into the game.
As a basketball player myself I understand what it feels like ...'tryna get up off the Sidelines'. I love the basketball analogy because i can relate to it ....but i digress......
"Dollar and a Dream III" starts off the album in a cinematic light, and is classic Cole. This is where we hear the story of his struggle, from it's very beginnings, as he moves on his way to touring and life on the road.
I'm not gonna break down each song...but what I will say is ....Follow him on his journey...u will not be disappointed. I can't pick a favourite track I love them all......
Been listening to the album everyday since. All I can say is COLE WORLD!
... Intro ......
Yeah
Still at it
Villmatic.
With the life we chose
I'm sending this out to those
Who feel down, but then rose
I'm hot, I'm hell bam
But this floor is cold
And when my story's told
Let it be known that I'd never fold
I took my time
I gave my soul
I watched you shine
But me I glow, so
I'm coming for what I'm owed
Diese erfolgt dann mit "Dollar and a Dream III".
We all the same, on different teams, but it's all a game".
So viel steht fest.
Nun noch meine Favouriten:
1. Can't Get Enough - Einfach ein Gute-Laune-Lied erster Güte.
