Within these, players have over 15,000 kit variations to discover, and will be able to fine-tune their preferred fighting style to give them the edge in combat that they will need to survive and prevail. In addition, new vehicles like the all terrain vehicle (ATV) and the UH-60 transport helicopter allow for new tactics, which players are free to choose from. As players fight through mission play they will level up their playable character through the ranks as they accumulate experience points in combat for enemies eliminated and objectives completed. Excellence in the battlefield is rewarded with an extensive range of pins, insignias and stars to unlock along with 50 dedicated ranks to achieve. Battlefield 2 also features a major multiplayer component. Along with standard 24-player online multiplayer options across eight maps, players can also compete in 4-player teams in 2 exclusive squad-only game modes, fighting together to unlock exclusive team awards and achievements. During these online battles players can spawn on your squad to get straight into the action, and use gadgets such as the tracer dart in-conjunction with the RPG to devastating effect. Taken together these features make for one of the most realistic ground/vehicle combat experiences ever.
The New Frostbite Engine
Tactical destruction in Bad Company 2 is taken to new heights with the updated DICE 'Frostbite' engine. Unlike in the first game in the series, which featured considerable, but limited destructible game environments, in Battlefield Bad Company 2 players can now take down entire buildings or create their own vantage points by blasting holes through cover, thereby delivering a unique dynamic experience in every match.

Ok, all of that aside, my impressions of the game. The fact that I feel so compelled to defend them should tell you something, and no it doesn't mean I work for them, or that I'm some fanboy. The game isn't perfect, by any means, but in my opinion it's the best game in the genre on the market today. I've been a devoted pc fps gamer ever since wolfenstein 3d, and started playing competitively in quake1 in 1996. This means I've likely been playing this style of game since before many of the gamers were born. During that time, I've seen more then my fair share of terrible games that were overhyped (wargasm), and great games that got lost in the shuffle (global operations). Battlefield: Bad Company 2 deserves every bit of hype that it's gotten and more. Like I said before, the game isn't without it's flaws, but overall it gives way more bang for the buck then just about anything else out there.
I won't go into real detail on the pros and cons of the game as Zoidberg (one of the other reviewers here) already covered them very well, but I will try to address some of the other concerns about the game that I've heard here and elsewhere. The first is that it isn't a true battlefield game. This is correct, it's a bad company game, which is a spin off of the battlefield series. It's not meant to be BF3, so don't judge it like it is. It's meant to have a more fast paced arcade feel to it. That's why there are smaller maps, with less players, and no commander or jets. Pretending like it's BF3 and snubbing your nose at the things that make it different from BF2 and the future BF3 don't prove anything other then your inability to understand simple concepts. The other pitfall I see a lot of reviewers falling into is the "well modern warfare 2 did it this way..." issue. Honestly, I don't think I should have to explain why this is a foolish comparison to make, but I will try to shed a little light on those who seem to live in the dark. It's like comparing checkers to chess, MW2 being checkers and BC2 chess. You have to remember what each game is trying to simulate. MW2 is meant to be a small scale special ops style gun fight, where as BC2 is meant to be a medium scale military engagement. One has a very narrow set of pieces, and caters to people who use a small set of tactics. Basically, much like checkers, whatever player gets a couple of kings (killstreaks) first, wins. BC2 on the other hand, has a wider variety of pieces, which are designed to compliment each other to allow the players to execute more complicated tactics as a team.
So long story short, don't listen to all the whining and cry babies who would rather throw and tantrum then exercise a little patience. This game is going to be one of the biggest and best FPS in town for a long time to come, well at least until BF3 comes out ;) Well worth every penny I paid for it, and considering they've already released one free map pack with more on the way, and have promised to continue to add content for free, breaking the disturbing trend in gaming where a partial game is released as a full priced title and then DLC is added to milk the customer's wallet. Hats off to DICE and EA for a great product!
MW2 has no dedicated servers, so you have to deal with cheaters/crackers, annoying players and can't kick/ban or police your game. BC2 has dedicated servers.
MW2 limits PC gamers to the 9v9 max player limit, while BC2 has lag free 16v16 maps and games.
MW2 doesn't allow for player mods/maps and is in the process of releasing a 5 map expansion at the cost of $15 on XBox 360, but 2 of the maps are old maps from Modern Warfare.
MW2 has a horrible anti-cheat system and cheating from aim bots, texture changes, wall glitches, etc., are rampant in the game.
MW2 is peer to peer, which means the game finds what it believes to be the best host, uses up the hosts bandwidth, and all the other players complain about lag or crappy hosting when in reality the host not only doesn't want to host and burn up their bandwidth, but they can't even control aspects of the game like picking maps, kicking people, etc. Peer to peer on consoles is what you would expect based on the current systems, but PC gamers don't need to put up with this BS.
Although I have put in a bit of time and enjoy MW2 the fact is BC2 is a far superior game just from the focus on PC benefits that gamers have enjoyed on the PC platform that were eliminated by MW2 and Infinity Ward. BC2 isn't a port of a console game and it maintains the customization and benefits of being on a modern gaming PC.
Gameplay-wise what really stands out for me are these areas:
1. You can destroy just about everything on screen. This is game changing because you can clear out vegetation where players are hiding. You can blow apart walls in buildings where people are hiding. You can demolish entire multi story buildings and kill players within. It means that each time you play a map that map is going to be different, which greatly adds to the re playability and realism of the game. Explosives are not just for killing and eye candy, but affect the environment beyond killing another player or watching nice fire and smoke effects while pieces of debris fly around. One thing I dislike is being able to knock out chain link fences or even doors with your melee/knife attack, but I understand not all classes can use explosives and need a way to clear these obstacles. Still, one swipe of a knife to break down a door is a bit strange.
2. Vehicles are numerous, game changing, and fun. Kill streak rewards in MW2 are fun and certain aspects like controlling an AC-130 weapons system or chopper gunner are nice, but you are just targeting little squares on your screen. In BC2 you are piloting the tank, driving the ATV, looking out the side of a Bradley, piloting the Huey or attack chopper, piloting an armed UAV. You aren't limited to a few seconds of being in a shooting gallery after a multiple killstreak, but are actually able to use these vehicles, repair them, run them for an entire game, leave them and come back to them or have a team mate take them for their own use. Also in point 1 vehicles are usually the best way for changing the game environment by decimating walls, buildings, barriers, trees, etc., and changing the game environment quickly.
3. The classes really matter and are for the most part nicely balanced. Playing as an assault soldier, medic, engineer, or recon/sniper changes your tactics, how you deal with each map/enemies, how you help your team, etc. You have to earn your way up in each class for new weapons, skills, accessories and it can be really frustrating in the beginning because the tools and items people several ranks ahead of you make a HUGE difference - such as a sniper with 12x optics, a medical guy being able to bring near dead team mates back to life, engineers with anti-vehicle weapons/mines, assault soldiers with much nicer rifles or 2x as many explosives.
I'm not surprised that there are quite a few people giving 1 star ratings, not because this game deserves such low scores, but because of the legions of MW2 fanbois as well as the frustration of getting into a game at BC2's release.
I'm giving 5 stars to offset at least 1 low 1 star rating, since I would give this game 4 stars normally or even 4.5 if possible. MW2 is a 3 or 3.5 star game in comparison.
