Worst game of the series.
2 Stars
Worst game of the series.
There were a lot of expectations made for the sequel to the Assassin's Creed series. Unfortunately it fell short on many different for a number of personal reasons that forced a lot of fans of this franchise to wonder if Ubisoft is slacking on the quality control of their products. I wanted this game to be great, as did many of you reading this, so it's only right that I give you viewpoint before purchasing this. Despite having a lot of issues with the game, I wish to point out 5 main ones, that I feel display a lack of quality control on the developers part.1. Bugs. I've never played a game, or bought an application that had so many bugs, that it made me want to return it. The protagonist got stuck on so many trees, boats, crates, and buildings, forcing me to restart, or transport to another location (see my screengrab). The game also froze on me on a number of occasions. I'm not really sure how this had even passed beta or alpha testing, but it is UNACCEPTABLE to release a product as final.2. Way too many enemies on the street. There seems to be a 1:1 ratio of Redcoats to civilians. It not only makes it unrealistic, but it takes away time from actually the purpose of the game: THE STORY.3. Scale. This game is way too big for it's own good. It's important for games to be ambitious; while equally important to not overplay their hand. I love some of the mini-missions and the side stories, but the gathering of recipes to build merchandise and sell products for money is a whole other game in itself and way too cumbersome. This takes away from playing the story, despite it being a requirement to make progress in the game. And because this game is way too big, the loading times are excessive. This part of the game needed to be trimmed down and simplified.4. Controls. I've had issues with the controls for all the Assassins Creed games. The protagonist has issues going in the right direction, in many situations. He'll go up the ladder, instead of when I want him to go up the wall, or he'll jump off the cliff instead of climbing down. The threshold for the actions of the controls needs to be perfected.5. STORY. Some of the cut scenes and subplots are absurd. You'll spend entire missions gathering flowers so that a fellow villager can court a woman, and breaking up fights within two people by using the R3 and L3 buttons. This is lazy gameplay at best, and irrelevant to the story.Overall, this game is fun and entertaining, for the most part, it has a lot of problems that should have been addressed before being released. I loved the idea of this taking place during the American Revolutionary War, and I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration into the politics of the American founding fathers. However, this is easily the weakest of the franchise, and should have gone through a lot more testing. As a vfx artist, designer, and fellow gamer, I expect a product that I spend $55 on to have great quality, and unfortunately this product should have been beta. I found it really mildly annoying and irresponsible to see that most people gave it 5/5 stars. To me, 5/5 stars means perfection, and this game is not the prime example of it.
