As for the story and gameplay, both are excellent, though if you're looking for a captive and emotional story like with previous Assassin's Creed games with Ezio and Altair, you'll be disappointed. As I understand it, the team that constructed Assassin's creed 2 through Revelations weren't a part of the making of AC3. This could probably be because Ubisoft wanted to give the player a different feel of the new character (Connor) and the atmosphere by bringing in a new team to make the game. In that sense, they did just that. Whether it was for the better or worse, that's up to you.
There are a couple of minor bugs--those I'm sure you've already read about, but it's nothing too serious that will intrude with the gameplay much and/or take from the experience. It's small things, like your horse getting stuck in crevices of things and glitching about until you move around enough to get free, etc. The only bug that I'd say is particularly annoying are those in which take away from QT events. At times in the game when the camera is supposed to pan in on your character for dramatic effect and essentially 'guide' you in the path you're supposed to go.. it just won't do it. This happened quite a few times, and I ultimately had to YouTube where to go in one particular instance near the end of the game because I just didn't know where to go and kept failing with the few seconds the mission would give me to catch up to someone.
Overall, great addition to the series and I hope Ubisoft has more for the Assassin's Creed franchise up their sleeves.
*****SPOILERS AHEAD*****
For one, it has a lot of the features from the first game that I HATED. One being the way the health works. In theory, auto-replenish health is great, but when you put it into practice it kind of sucks. AC2, ACB & ACR all have the option to purchase medicine, and in the latter two games, you actually don't even need to buy them because you can pick them off of guards once you kill them. What I like about the medicine is this: when I'm fighting 10 people at once, I get hit five times or so and I'm desynchronized. Do you have any idea how annoying it is to play the same sequence multiple times? I'll use an actual game play example: during the Battle of Bunker Hill, Conner has to cross the battlefield in order to kill Putnum. I had to replay this level an innumerable amount of times because I'd get shot four times and desynchronize. Now you might be thinking "Well why don't you just wait for your health to replenish?" I tried that. It doesn't automatically replenish during this part of the game. At all. Maybe that's a glitch but it still makes playing that portion of the game infuriating.
Another part of ACB & ACR that's absent from AC3 is the assassin recruits. As I said, I haven't finished this game yet so maybe this will come later, but I'm at least half way through and still nothing of this sort.
The map is annoying, to say the least. In all of the previous AC games the map is fully revealed once you synchronize every viewpoint. Not in this game. Even if you synchronize every viewpoint, there are still parts that you have to, basically, run through in order for them to show up on the map. What's the point of the viewpoints then, may I ask? Perhaps it's just my OCD talking but the fact that I can't see the full map is beyond annoying.
The weapon selection screen seems unnecessary, to be honest. The one used in the previous games worked just fine and it didn't make you pause the game to get to it. Perhaps I'm nit picking now but still.
Now that I've mentioned some gripes, here are some good things.
I was fooled initially by the Kenway/Conner twist and I was so glad Kenway wasn't the character I had to play because he was SO BORING. I do like Conner, he's no Ezio but I didn't expect him to be so that's fine. He's interesting enough in his own right and I enjoyed his tragic origin story.
The graphics are pretty great, though that's not really a reason I play games, to be honest. But if it matters to whoever might be reading this, they're pretty good, better than ACR, anyway.
It seems to be a constant complaint with most reviews I've seen, but I actually like the hunting. It's a nice change from the other AC games and, well, I really love using a bow and arrow.
The ability to climb trees and scale mountains is pretty cool and, again, a nice change from the other AC games. I do miss running along rooftops though, there aren't too many in Boston.
The story is mildly interesting. Not as interesting to me as AC2, ACB and ACR, but maybe that's because I'm American and none of what I'm playing through is new to me. I don't know, did non-Americans find this game's story line interesting? Just curious.
I love the addition of mini games. I wish Fanorona was in it more because I suck at the other two games, but they're still fun to play regardless.
The ship battles are pretty cool, they were kind of hard to get the hang of at first for me but once I did, it was great!
I think that's all. I'll keep playing, obviously, and I hope it does become more fun for me. I want to like this game but it just has to do a little more to win me over, I suppose.
All in all, gripes aside, if you liked the previous AC games, you'll most likely enjoy this one as well.
