A bit of background: I've been playing Street Fighter for over 25 years, and I've played the actual arcade versions of literally every one of the included games. I'm by no means an expert but I've enjoyed these games for a long time. I was disappointed in how different SFV felt, and didn't have the time to invest in learning it, so I haven't played it very much at all. When this was announced, I got excited. I didn't have to spend time learning these games, after all...I already know how to play them!
This collection includes 12 arcade versions spanning Street Fighter I through III. Included is the original game, the 5 original arcade versions of Street Fighter II, the 3 versions of Street Fighter Alpha, and the Street Fighter III trilogy. It bears repeating that these are the arcade versions, so features added to console versions of the game (World Tour mode and bonus characters in Alpha 3, for example) are not here. They weren't cut, so to speak, they were just never there to begin with.
Versus mode is also present, in the form of saved states. In the collection's menu, you pick your game, characters and stage. A saved state is loaded and the match begins. Afterwards, you can do it again. It's a rudimentary way of handling it, but it effectively works just as well as the real thing.
For 8 games out of the 12, this is all you get. But for SFII Hyper Fighting, Super SFII Turbo, SF Alpha 3, and SFIII 3rd Strike, you also get Training mode (via ROM hacks) and--the real highlight of this collection--online play. You can select the amount of input lag; the higher the lag setting, the more the game can compensate for a poor connection. But even after lowering the setting from the default of 3 down to 1, and after playing 3 solid hours of Ranked Matches against over two dozen unique opponents, I've had an excellent experience all around, even connected via Wi-Fi. I've read that some players on Switch and PS4 have not had as smooth of an experience, but on XB1 it's been pretty great. It's also worth mentioning that if you join a lobby, you can switch between the 4 playable games between matches at will, without having to switch lobbies, which is pretty nice.
There are also a few bonus galleries including art and music, and a few limited options for things like screen size. Actually, the screen size option in itself is a pretty good representation of the whole collection. You only get 3 choices: original size and aspect ratio, an option that blows up the size (to bigger than your screen) but preserves aspect ratio, and of course, the hideous, stretched "full screen." There is nothing in between.
Likewise, this collection could have been a lot more. For example, at least as of launch, it lacks the option to map all 3 Punch or Kick buttons to a single button. This has been a feature of the home versions for many years, and makes using some moves much easier. You also can't adjust the CPU difficulty. And, the omission of Online/Training modes for Street Fighter Alpha 2 is disappointing, considering that it's the highlight of the series for many fans. Actually, why not include Online/Training modes for all 12 games? Nobody is going to take Street Fighter 1 seriously, but as a novelty, why not?
You could also go further and ask, why were some of the home versions not included? Objectively, the arcade versions of Street Fighter II were all better than the home versions. But so many additional features were added to console ports of the later games that many players will miss them.
Despite all of the omissions...for me, it was absolutely worth the purchase. I really just wanted to play Super Turbo and 3rd Strike online. That's what I got, it's executed very well, and so for me, it's a solid four stars.
Love all the different street fighter games.
If you're thinking about getting this game, I promise you won't regret it.
