I tried them all - Here is my SOS review
1 Star
I tried them all - Here is my SOS review
I tried and reviewed all the major survival bar brands. Check my reviews for photos and more details of each.First of all, I see a lot of people looking for food to put in their 72-hour bag, or go-bag. None of these emergency rations are made for that situation. None of have enough protein or calories for a 72-hour 'situation'. You are better off buying MRE's for your 72-hour bag. These emergency rations are intended for a lifeboat or fallout shelter where you are sitting all day for several weeks not expending much energy. Maybe you can leave some in your car if you travel the back roads during the winter or the desert during the summer and it might be days before you are rescued. They are NOT FOOD. They are low energy survival rations. The SOS food bar comes in a 3600 calorie package. Inside the package there are 9 bars that are 410 calories each. Each 410 calorie bar is wrapped in thin plastic wrapper so you can just open the amount you want to eat. They suggest you eat two bars per day for a total of 820 calories in an emergency situation. Once you open the outer package it cannot be re-sealed. It would be better if they had a ziplock closure on the outer package to protect the contents from the elements. I don't think the thin plastic wrapper will keep mice or insects out of the bars. Also, as you can see in the photo - two of the individual wrappers were not sealed!!The SOS brand is crumbly when you bite it. It is easy to bite into but crumbly so you need to be careful when you eat it. It essentially has no taste. Just a slight sugary aftertaste is about all. That is typical of all survival bars. THE BIG ISSUE WITH THIS BAR IS THE FIRST INGREDIENT IS SUGAR!! Most of the other survival bars the first ingredient is flour or wheat, but this one it is sugar. But even with all the sugar they really don't taste all that great. They are not really suppose to taste good, they are not a snack. This brand had very few vitamins - about 30% of the your daily vitamin C, 12% iron, and 12% of vitamin A if you eat two 410 calorie bars each day. After tasting and researching all the major brands of survival bars- I WILL NOT BE BUYING THIS BRAND AGAIN!!! It does not have enough vitamins and the thin plastic wrapper is not enough protection for the unused bars. Once you open the outer package the bars are only protected by a thin plastic wrap and some of them were not sealed or closed completely. Add in the fact it is low in vitamins and minerals and this brand does not make the cut for me.Remember, these are not a snack, they are emergency rations and are not intended to "taste good" most have no taste at all. They are not food or meal substitutes. It is recommended that you don't eat anything for the first 24 hours anyway, unless you are injured. You will not starve to death after just a few days anyway.
