WHY IT'S IMPORTANT: One of the most puzzling thing about medical practice is how long it takes for really good research to actually become everyday practice. I remember how it blew my mind as a med student to find out that it took 20+ years for antibiotic ulcer therapy (vs ineffective antacids) to finally take hold as standard practice amongst docs. Now, Dr Breus has brought to us the life-changing science of CHRONOTYPE in super-digestible form so you know a) what *your* biorhythms are and b) how to use them to live better. It's not a minute too soon.
Chronotype is genetically determined; it's as immutable as your eye color. And chances are, right now you don't know what your chronotype is. As a result, you may have spent a lifetime putting yourself down, wondering what the heck is wrong with you, and struggling to adapt to the rest of the world. Well, struggle no more. It's like one day discovering you're gluten-sensitive, stop eating bread, and having this chronic problem you thought you were going to have for the rest of your life suddenly go *poof* and vanish.
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: The book starts with quizzes to determine your chronotype. Then, based on your type, it tells you the optimal time to engage in various activities -- and the time to definitely *avoid* those activities (e.g. *never* argue after 11pm). Breus has made this super-streamlined, logical, and easy to use. He even has timelines for your ideal day specific to your chronotype, taking the guesswork completely out of it. Just grab your recipe and go. Breus has also been a practicing sleep doc for 15+ years, so he's speaking from experience, not speculation. This is cutting-edge science that works, folks.
WHY YOU SHOULD GET IT: You may not have known that you have a chronotype, but it's been running your life the whole time. Instead of continuing to get things wrong, might as well know the science behind the best time to sleep, eat, work, exercise, have sex, get a vaccine, be creative and a whole bunch more, so you can live your happiest, most productive and flourishing life. It may also solve a lot of mysteries about how you're "weird", thereby lifting off your shoulders a lifelong burden of self-recrimination. An essential reference for active humans.
-- Ali Binazir, M.D., M.Phil., Happiness Engineer and author of The Tao of Dating: The Smart Woman's Guide to Being Absolutely Irresistible , the highest-rated dating book on Amazon for 4+ years
The book starts with a simple quiz that helps you determine your Chronotype. Chronotype is the scientific study and classification of your personal biological energy patterns based on circadian rhythms. Everyone has a unique chronotype that determines your peak energy flows throughout the day. The book also helps you understand the positive combination of hormones with your peak energy states in every area of your life. By understanding the critical combination of hormone production and energy you can time the best time of the day to do everything.
After taking the quiz, I found out I was a bear chronotype. I've begun using the timing suggestions for when to sleep and wake up and when to be most effective in my work and so far, I've woken up more refreshed every day. It did require that I make a change to when I went to bed and got up. There is a formula for determining your best time to sleep based on your chronotype. I also moved as much of my work as I could that required strong problem solving into different areas of the day and it has made a significant difference in my ability to focus.
Each chapter focuses on a specific topic like when to exercise, when to have sex, when to focus on creative efforts, or when to sleep and breaks the chapter down for your chronotype. I like the specificity of each section for the chronotype. After a brief introduction to the topic of each chapter you can dig into what is relevant to you. It is important to read your spouse or partner's chronotype as well to better understand their daily patterns so that you can maximize or improve your interactions with them. I was surprised to find out that my chronotype should have sex on Saturday mornings!
I like this book because it is supported by evidence based studies. The title might make you think that it is based on pop psychology or made up idees, it is not. While very easy and fun to read, it brings serious science to bear and provides you with a great jumping off point if you want to dig into the research. I also like all the additional resources and video explanations on the authors website, he gives you more examples, details and exercises that you can do to become more efficient at maximizing your personal chronotype.
While I got an early review copy of the book, I found it so intriguing that I bought it for my employees and close family members. I really feel like this is a book that everyone needs to read to finally understand how and when to sleep and how to properly time their day to reach maximum effectiveness throughout the day.
Didn't like the books format much; its intended to allow you to jump around and look up specifically what's relevant to you, but I just found it disruptive and it made for a very choppy read and recollection. I would have preferred more flow overall, with the reference material grouped together. However, its easy to critique this as a reader and much hard to actually organize the writing effectively, so perhaps this was the only way he could make it work.
Hovering between 3 and 4 stars... but I'll give the benefit of the doubt and set it at 4, if only because I have in fact adopted some of the things he outlines into my daily life.
If, in weeks or months, my life has transformed amazingly like some of the anecdotal examples provided in the book, then i'll come back and give it a 5 star and provide an update to the review.
FYI. I'm a dolphin. Or a wolf. It varied, but the book does more or less say that you don't have half-half... that you're going to be one with variations, etc. Because of that inconsistency in my own chronotype, it has made it harder to know which schedule I need to follow to make improvements and I've had to do some experimenting with both. I expect if you fall more squarely into one of the 4 types its probably easier to know exactly which changes to make and you may have more success than I.

It’s crazy how much knowledge there is in that book
Very trust worthy and life changing book
It's written for the average corporate-job people. The schedules suggested are linked back to the "usual" 9-6 work hours. If you're searching for a solution to adapt to that, the book offers advice. Since I was searching for a way to live my life in accordance to my rhythm, to changes in daylight, times zones, etc I got little interesting information. It just didn't make sense to me to read "bears get up with the sun" & afterwards getting a fit-all advice on waking up at 7am (it's pitch-black during winter & sunny during summer).
P.S.: Der Nobelpreis für Medizin ging in diesem Jahr an Forscher, die zur "inneren Uhr", also der Chronobiologie geforscht haben.
