Sega did a tremendous job of handling the localization without editing or taking out parts of the game unlike Nintendo and just straight translations.
Since this is the first time a 7th Dragon series has been released in the US, the game is not well known to many people and remains a hidden gem.
I've been playing this game more than 10 hours and I can't put it down, this kind of RPG is what I wanted for a long time now and it reminds me of some classic JRPGs and 7th Dragon III Code: VFD has lots of character.
The character creation customization is unique and great. You can customize any class and gender, as there is no gender limitations and the voices provide fun personalities to each you create. The art style for the characters are amazing and have a lot of depth and thought to it. I can never get tired of them. The prologue chapters let you create your very first team with up to three characters for the game simulation and yes, they're real people in your team when you recruit them into your team. They can be edited at any party management and the edits will be carried over to a new look and class, so it is limitless. But don't do it too much, you'll ruin your own immersion.
But there is no interpersonal character interaction within your party like Bioware games, but relationships still exist for dating options that is gender neutral. While you characters have voices and they do talk from your voice choices during battle and interaction of some items in the dormitories as well as during dating cut scenes, they don't speak or talk to any of the important characters and NPCs with their own voiced dialogue in cut scenes. Instead, your main character will have dialogue choices with two choices that is pretty linear to interact with the characters. Some choices can put some funny reactions, but they don't impact the plot that much.
The gameplay and battles are enjoyable and don't get tiresome. Each battle has an 'Auto' option when you deal with low-level monsters once your characters are high in level. This kind of dungeon crawler is different from others and you can see your character and party members unleash their attacks and specials on the enemies. The attacks come as quick and shows the model of the characters, while casting they're shown for a longer time.
The music is amazing, one of the best I've heard in video games. The electronic dance music and techno dub step music never gets boring and they're very catchy. The battle and boss battles has a retro throwback and they can remind of you some weird Japanese PS1/Sega Saturn chip-tunes. The dragon boss battles is where they shine, the tracks make you feel pump up during the battle and gives you a sense of urgency to kill the dragons as fast as possible! The exploration music for each world are unique and provide earworms. They're fascinating and I love it!
Buy the soundtrack CD if you can! Since it is an Japan-only release for the soundtrack. Again, the music and vocal songs are awesome!
The story has a cool twist using advanced time-travel technology where you must travel back in time with your team to stop the Dragon Calamity before they destroy humanity and other living beings. You get to travel back 12,000 years in time and then later on in the future. I won't spoil any of the plot here. But the story is great and unique which is why most of the important characters are fun with lots of character. The main mascot is a foul-mouthed rabbit-like creature, Nagamimi. While he may turn off some people, he does have lots of quirky funny dialogue and he is not family-friendly at all. Most missions have you rescue people on the way in the dungeons and it is highly recommend that you do, if you don't then you're a monster.
When you kill off all the dragons within a area, the dragonbane clears up therefore making the place free from dragons. The dragon counter can be found when you are in world select showing how many are there. As you progress through the story, your hard work is shown and it is exciting to see you and your party build up and fix the problems created from the dragons. The side quests also help as well, since they provide more things to do. The building gets more populated and becomes less isolated when you do that. This game gives you a sense of accomplishment the deeper you get into the plot.
The main headquarters you live in is Nodens, a high-tech research and development company that is trying to prevent the Dragon Calamity before it happens and later on in the game you can use DZ points which is Dragon points from the many dragon monsters you killed in the dungeons to construct new rooms and floors and they create more room for you to explore and extra quests to perform if you want to take a break from the main quest, so you can take many breathers in Nodens which is great. The more Dz you collect, the more you can construct new floors for the Nodens main headquarters and the people you rescued will also be there to personally congratulate or thank you for the things you've done if you choose to save them
Yes, I recommend 7th Dragon III Code: VFD. This is game is like a great novel with many page turners and you know want to know what happens next once the plot moves forward. I played this game for a long time now and it is hard to put down thanks to the writers and developers creating a wonderful game of the 7th Dragon series. The artwork, characters, game play, music, and battles are fun and unique. I highly recommend buying this great JRPG into your awesome Nintendo 3DS library.
Thank you, Sega!
Firstly, I was really happy to find that this game was some kinda special edition, big box and artbook included! Wasn't expecting that, it's some kinda launch edition so, good start there.
I love the art on this game, it's what sold me initially, other than 1 early 30 second gameplay trailer ...from MONTHS ago I'm in blind. The game is very pretty (too pretty as the framerate gets a bit choppy in areas) and it carries a lot of style to the 3DS, despite it being a sort of dungeon crawler the areas seem pretty varied so far.
Battles are fast and fun, characters have slick and fast attacks and each class seems to have a decent array of moves at their disposal, buffed by the fact you can pick what ones to get and upgrade with skill points.
Battles almost feel like Phantasy Star IV, well animated monsters with your characters darting in for the attack, just as fast too...So that wins me right there.
The art is, so, freaking, pretty. I really like the style they have going here, it's really pulled me in. The story seems pretty heavy from the get-go (I've not played the previous releases of this game as they are Japanese only) dragons are invading and you have to stop them and have some special means to do so. So, you create a character (it's a very simple system, 2 styles and 3 color pics), pick a class, a voice (from a huge list) then you do the same for your allies.
The game I have to applaud for not wasting your time, battles as I said are fast, you have a good movements speed and when at your base you can teleport to any floor. When you're in the field you have teleport points where you can jump back to base and back to the field at that spot, so you don't really feel like you're fighting the game for progress.
BIG PLUS: You don't have to worry about losing your way in the plot if you put the game down for too long, which is nice. Like Phantasy Star IV's TALK function, In Dragon 3 you can go to NAVI and it will remind you what you're supposed to be doing.
It's got some funky tunes, I really like them ...they're kinda retro but in a PS1/Sega Genesis kinda way if that makes any sense. Get your headphones it's funky and good.
The game chugs on the 3DS at times, on the field that is the framerate can go low, nothing unplayable or anything but it's worth noting. I have the new variant and I'm wagering it does not take any advantage from the extra power. Maybe another user with the original 3DS can comment on how it handles there.
I may update this later but I'm really enjoying myself with it, my biggest complaint (which isn't the fault of the game) is it's on the 3DS and can't be put on a TV like the GBA, GBC/GB which is a shame. But that doesn't take away from the game itself which is very good.
I like that I could create my characters' class, name, appearance, and voice. I also got to customize skills. But whenever games allow for character customizations, it seems like they sacrifice character personality development or backstories. The plot wasn't that great in this game. Life was confined to one building (besides portals to different worlds), which I found unrealistic. It was also unrealistic and annoying how much one character cusses. The creator may have not realized that it's possible to have a rude character without it cussing. Also, there is a trans-gender person in the game, so if that bothers you, don't get this.
Features: Character customization with voice options of popular JP voice actors/actresses, romance system (romance whomever you want regardless of gender!), dungeon crawling, turn-based combat with 3rd person view attack animations, AMAZING soundtrack, and nice visuals
Cons: Some FPS drops in certain areas (if that bothers you), might not be very difficult at all, very easy to grind because of how fast the encounter bar fills up, treasure chests on every map might make the game very easy overall, there are abundances of save points that heal your whole party, the plot may be predictable/cheesy if you are used to series like these
Neutral: I'm not sure if it's my 3DS model, but the game uses a lot of battery fast
Top reviews from other countries
Character customization includes 8 classes to choose from, each with 4 appearances (2 male, 2 female) and 3 colour schemes per appearance, and 40 voices (20 male, 20 female). It was confusing at first, having never played any of the prior 7th Dragon games and never having watched a single review, but after I figured out that you don't just make one character, and that the protagonist is not just the one person, but actually a group of characters you create, it made more sense. You get 3 different parties with 3 members each, and it's fun creating the parties that will go well together. I'm not one to write reviews on games, but if you enjoy the play style and story of Bravely Default and other similar turn-based RPGs (and a little bit of "dating sim") then I'd definitely recommend this game.
If you like JRPGs where you can customize your characters and select different classes, then this game is for you!
The basic plotline is that you must destroy the coming 7th final dragon or humanity is doomed. You achieve this goal by time travelling and creating new technology. I really enjoy the battle music, however, I should note that the game is not in 3D stereoscopic. The launch edition comes with a free artbox and collector's box.
Finally, Sega is offering all of the DLC for free for the first week that it is released, so you'll save money if you get the same sooner! :)
