Why Calibrate Your Monitor
Most monitors come out of the box with the brightness set too high and with over-saturated colors – plus they degrade over time. Another very important factor to ensure proper image editing and print matching, is having the correct room lighting conditions. Your display is the window into your digital image, you need to be able to trust it. Spyder5 calibrates your display to your environment and to an industry color reference standard to ensure your colors are accurate for better print matching. Your image editing will be easier and faster, you’ll spend less time in the 'print-edit-print' cycle, and you’ll waste less ink and paper.
Top 5 Reasons to Calibrate Your Display
- Monitors display colors differently.
- People see colors differently.
- Prints don’t match your monitor.
- Image colors are not true to life.
- Save time and money.

I previously had purchased the idisplay pro from x-rite and used it on my work laptop and monitor.
The software it came with crashed a lot and the one time it worked it left my mbp inoperable with a constant grey screen.
Apple support wasn't able to remedy it so they replaced it with a new laptop.
The spyder software never crashed; worked the very first try. It easily matched my monitors and the best part is I still have a working laptop.
Compared to my manual calibrations and the one done through the spyder, there is a noticeable difference and my color gamut is more accurately tuned to NTSC.
I don't know how the calibrations compare between the spyder and the idisplay pro since the idisplay did nothing but destroy my laptop.
My experience may be an extreme of what may go wrong but the undeniable line I see is that product quality control for the x-rite idisplay pro is extremely lacking- from their barely functional program software, to the faulty sensory hardware that they sent me.
My complaints come mostly from owning a Spyder2 Pro, the much older version of this. (roughly 2004 release date) The Spyder2 still works well, even with Windows 10. I bought the new version expecting some improvements, new features, something. But it just isn't there. The sensor is smaller, and the software got a visual facelift. But that is about it. In fact the software getting a facelift actually introduces a new issue. I use a 30" center monitor, with 20" 1600x1200 monitors on each side, turned to landscape mode. This results in a 1200 pixel width, which makes controlling the software (which overhangs that width) a real pain. It wasn't an issue on the older version, because the entire interface was designed for smaller screens. They've also switched from a simple software license key to the more complicated key+registration+authentication code model. Not a huge problem, just annoying.
So in short, if you have nothing now, this is a good buy. If you have an older Spyder device, there is reason to upgrade.
Result: took 15 minutes or so (after a 30 minute warm-up). Asked me to slightly reduced the brightness of my monitor. Increased contrast and saturation a bit but color balance remained unchanged. Will write more when I have tried this on other monitors and a projector.
Pros: Easy to install software works flawlessly on Win7 machine. Wizard made it easy to follow step by step instructions - such as optimizing screen brightness during testing to account for ambient light. Ability to save multiple color files (e.g. night time with office lights vs. daytime) and can switch between them easily.
Cons: USB cord is really too short - I would hope that the vendor increase the cord length by at least 12". I have a PC box on the floor with USB slots in the top (about a foot from the desk surface) and the Spyder could NOT be hung on the monitor because the cord was too short! This is unacceptable for a $200 "professional product". I had to drag the PC box right below my monitor and with the cord completely stretched it barely fit. Some may say that you just need an USB extension, but again for a professional product "specifically designed" to be hung over a monitor and placed into a USB port, you would think that the minimal length would cover not only a desktop adjacent to the monitor but also a floor standing PCs.

This Spyder5 is excellent, I particularly found the room light meter on it's top handy. While aiming for sRGB which is not 100% possible with this TN monitor I got it to 98% compliance and 0.01 from 2.20 gamma and spot on 120cd brightness. There's also less banding through greyscale. I used the advanced settings and extended grey tuning function. It did take quite a lot of experimentation and tweaking to get the end result. You can of course use quick calibration, I did try that first and while very good compared to the standard monitor setup it it's not quite good enough with higher brightness and lower gamma results. It is worth spending the time using this package to it's full extent to get a proper result you are happy with.
I'm not too bothered about that last 2% as I rarely edit photos and predominantly game anyhow. Colour calibration helps me with editing game textures in Photoshop and making sure they don't look rubbish for everyone else.
