Back in print for the first time in decadesand featuring a new interview with the author, in celebration of her centennial birthdaythe delectable escapades of Hollywood legend Olivia de Havilland, who fell in love with a Frenchmanand then became a Parisian

In 1953, Olivia de Havilland—already an Academy Award-winning actress for her roles in
To Each His Own and The Heiress—became the heroine of her own real-life love affair. She married a Frenchman, moved to Paris, and planted her standard on the Left Bank of the River Seine. It has been fluttering on both Left and Right Banks with considerable joy and gaiety from that moment on.

Still, her transition from Hollywood celebrity to
parisienne was anything but easy. And in Every Frenchman Has One, her skirmishes with French customs, French maids, French salesladies, French holidays, French law, French doctors, and above all, the French language, are here set forth in a delightful and amusing memoir of her early years in the “City of Light.”

Paraphrasing Caesar, Ms. de Havilland says, “I came. I saw. I was conquered.”

This book is hilarious. I laughed aloud soooooooooo many times while I read this book! I wish it was four times as long, because I was absolutely not ready for it to be finished.

Ms. de Havilland wrote this in 1962. She had married a Frenchman and moved to France a few years earlier, though she still came back to the US to make movies now and then. The book is all about what it's like to adjust to living in France after living in the USA all your life. And when I say she can make the story of repainting their new home into a laugh-inducing tale of woe, you know this must be good, right?

Oh, another thing that made me laugh was the title of the very first chapter: "I'm not at all sure if you know that I'm alive..." That cracked me up because fifty-five years after this book was written, she's still alive. Ms. de Havilland turned 101 in July, and she still lives in Paris. Astonishing woman.

Oh, and what does every Frenchman have? Not a mistress or a drinking problem or a beret. It's a liver. Every Frenchman has a liver. If you want to know what on earth she could find to write about that, read the book.

This is a re-release of Olivia de Havilland's whimsical 1962 memoir about adjusting to life in France in the 1950s. (De Havilland will celebrate her hundredth birthday on June 28, 2016.) The book includes 20 charming, funny, and self-effacing essays the Oscar-winning actress wrote about topics ranging from undergoing renovations with a French construction crew to trying to figure out if her son actually has a fever using a thermometer marked only with Celsius. A few celebrities dot the pages -- such as the Comtesse de Paris (to whom de Havilland neglected to curtsy!) and famed hairdresser Alexandre -- but most of the stories revolve around de Havilland, her family, and everyday people she encountered.
It was an enjoyable read, and it made me hope de Havilland finishes her long-rumored autobiography.

This book has been republished , and I’m glad I found a an excellent copy. Olivia writes of her adventures, some comical misadventures, and humorous view of life abroad. No spoiler alert here: every Frenchman does have one!

Olivia de Havilland is 100 years old! Wow. I didn't love this little book, but I found it interesting. For some reason it is surprising to find a celebrity with a sense of humor. Maybe I am judging by todays standards when they all take themselves so seriously. It is rare to find some one who can laugh about themselves. Olivia does tell stories that make her the one at whom we are laughing. I found the stories about her second husband, the Frenchman, endearing, I was sorry that the marriage ended in divorce. I found the book a little disjointed, but the writer came through as just a nice person with a sense of humor.

In 1953, Olivia de Havilland has a young son and is newly divorced from her Texas husband. On a trip to France she meets Pierre Galante, her future husband and soon moves to Paris. This book describes her adventures, misconceptions, and life as wife of a Frenchman. There are several things Olivia has to learn in a short time and she tells it all in a very breezy, self-deprecating manner. Determined to learn French and French customs, Olivia takes language lessons and takes full advantage of Pierre's connections. She has a lot to learn about the French maid common to American plays, or the importance of hair styles and coiffeurs, or the dependability of lessons by her American Home Economics teachers.Sometimes, American customs and manners lead her astray - the chrysanthemums and the perfectly prepared turkey are just two examples, A wonderful book and a quick read.

I wanted to love this book. Ms. DeHavilland has had an incredible rich life & I thought this book would be a memoir with more length and detail. Instead it was verbose snippets about her dinner with new French friends, schools, her maids etc. There was no timeline that connected her stories; there was brief mention of a new film she was in but I did not get a "picture" of her life in France. I love stories of how people adjust to a new culture & location. Unfortunately, this fell short.

An easy read. Funny. Interesting. A talented actress writes well.

A star in many great movies of the last century, Olivia de Havilland wrote this book about her first years living in France. It was originally published in the early 1960's. She is still living there and is now 102 years old; the book was republished in honor of her 100th birthday complete with an interview with her.

Overall, I did enjoy the book. Some chapters were really hilarious. Some were a bit hard on the French, but some expressed possibly well deserved criticism. A few will probably give the politically correct a fit. But, I think all were pretty much factually correct.

Times have changed, so let this book take you back and make you laugh/smile, sigh and/or maybe cringe.

Spoiler Alert:

The title refers to the French obsession with the liver - probably not what you thought, right? :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Sometimes living in France is such a painful experience!
Reviewed in France on November 7, 2018
If you’ve ever lived in France, then you will completely understand the musings of Olivia De Havilland. Though written over 50 years ago, so much of her experience with the French, and France in general, would still resonate today.

From “no, ce n’est pas possible” (no, it’s not possible) and “ca n’existe pas en France” (this doesn’t exist in France) to her bathtub being in the kitchen, her memoirs are a delight to read, albeit stressful at times, too.

Challenges began from the first moment she stepped foot in France. Each chapter spinning a tale of some crazy episode that’s happened, some strange event that is so unbelievable it could only be true, or some off the wall person or people that has come into her life and left her with that “deer in the headlights” look.

One of my favorite chapters was when she went to the store to try to find a black tie for her son and the woman behind the counter said that what she wanted didn’t exist in France even though the tie was hanging right behind the sales woman. I could just feel her frustration (mostly because this has happened to me, so I knew exactly how she felt) as the sales lady was giving her the brush-off just because the French love to say “no”! Ahh! I was happy to see that in the end, she stood her ground, told the sales lady off (in so many words), and walked out with the tie!

Even though I laughed out loud at some of the predicaments Ms. De Havilland wrote about, I also wanted to pull my hair out because sometimes living in France is such a painful experience!

Most of the book, she keeps to her own experiences. Every so often she mentions her children or her husband, but it’s mostly just in passing. It gives the reader the feeling that this is straight out of a diary of her own thoughts and she doesn’t try to put those thoughts or feelings onto anyone else.

A short, but good read. If you love France, have lived or do live in France, or want to live in France……I would definitely recommend this book.

I absolutely adore Olivia de Havilland and I'm so happy this book got a re-issue. I bought it despite having the first edition, mainly because I wanted to read the added chapter for Olivia de Havilland's 100th in 2016.

What I love about her writing is that it's very candid and signature to her. I can hear her saying it as I read it and I feel it's quite ahead of its time considering it was written in the 1960s. I also love the small size and the graphics of the book, it feels nice and has a retro aesthetic.

I highly recommend this books for some light hearted, feel good holiday reading!
