THE BEST FAMILY PRODUCT I EVER PURCHASED. This router transformed my family home.
    5 Stars
THE BEST FAMILY PRODUCT I EVER PURCHASED. This router transformed my family home.
No more gripes or complaints about Internet access. No more holding the Wi-Fi passwords over your kids' heads. No more "surprise, your kid was doing something way outside their age range and you never found out."If you need to get a handle on who's doing what on your Internet at home, you need to buy this product and be ready to give a half-day to configuring it. You can configure it and be up and running within 30 minutes, but if you take the time to go into the deep settings you can do everything with this that you might wish to do in a home with kids. The product is so good I'm considering doing a YouTube walkthrough on how to do its deep settings for a family home. It seems daunting at first but as you go through and set everything up you gain a true understanding of your home network.I bought this product to replace the subscription-based parental control router I was previously using which didn't work very well and wasn't able to maintain my kids' programmed Internet schedules (it would clamp down on time but wouldn't cut off existing connections so a crafty kid could sustain pretty much anything all the way through their ban time). Here's what you want to do:1) buy this product2) plug this thing into your cable modem / router / dsl / whatever your internet connection is3) use your mobile phone or computer to do the basic setup, get it on the Internet, etc according to the instructions on their included setup card. If you're too impatient to do that, you'll be fine just connecting to its wifi and following directions there.4) once you have the Synology connected to the internet, migrate all your Ethernet devices one at a time (you want to do it one at a time so you can check each device in and name it and assign an icon to it without mistakes, something critical for user access management)5) once you're done with your Ethernet devices, it's time to do your wifi devices. Start with building infrastructure: do your Ring or Arlo cameras, do your solar monitor if you have one. Then do all your media devices that don't really have users like living room TVs. Then you can start migrating individual users' devices. But again, I can't stress this enough: NAME EVERYTHING IN THE TRAFFIC CONTROL PANEL AS SOON AS YOU CONNECT IT. "Mom's phone" "Kitchen Alexa screen" etc. You want to do it this way so you can assign every device to a profile.6) Now go into the Profiles menu and make your profiles (I have one for each resident, one for surveillance, one for utilities, one for TVs, etc. Some people do one for videogaming consoles but in my house these are assigned to individual users to keep the kids offline at night :P7) Once you've got everything, YES I MEAN EVERYTHING, assigned to a profile, you should create a default web filter that blocks everything (mine is called Prevention and only allows you to reach Wikipedia). Assign that filter to the default LAN. This way, you don't have to guard or change the wifi password. Any device you didn't authorize can only access wikipedia (or whatever you set up).I got grief from my kids over the schedules for only one day. Ever since then, they've been way more accepting. I sent them the internet schedules and the web filter schedules and they don't try to negotiate for extra access or anything. So, as I conclude, I need to stress: for a one-time purchase of under $200 and with no subscription required I have eliminated the needless drama around Internet freedom at home, all while having strict control and realtime monitoring of what they're trying to access on my phone - which already has facilitated age-appropriate conversations between me and my teen that would have just been guarded secrets without this device.Best. Family. Purchase. Ever.
