There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The reason for my review is because no one talks about the security/privacy features in detail. They all want to talk about the performance and/or convenience features only. It got very tiring scanning through reviews in an effort to try to find the important information (IMO). These lists may not be complete; they contain what I consider important for security/privacy. My 'Does Not Have' list may not be completely accurate; but they are features I want and either it does not have, or I can't find and/or configure. Here we go:
Included features that work:
* Useful system status screens
* Selectable DNS with DNS forwarding (router can also be a DNS server if I want it to)
* Useful list of all connected devices on network with ability to rename
* NAT (simple)
* Intrusion detection (via Threat Prevention app), DoS prevention, and IGMP snooping prevention (not as feature rich as Sophos but still useful)
* Can disable WPS, no HNAP, disable UPnP, disable quick connect, disable login via external network
* Web filtering by user/time of day/day of week/ MAC address (not as feature rich as Sophos but still useful)
* Logging (simplified, more information below)
* Reporting via email and text messaging
* Wireless guest DHCP for IoT devices (can also disable guest network)
* QoS prioritization by device
* Block by MAC
* Enable/disable wireless by time of day/day of week
* Manual button for enable/disable wireless
* WPA2/3 with PSK and enterprise
* Can be a RADIUS server (via an app)
* VPN server functions (via an app)
* Can disable Admin account
* Can change router address and port for admin user
* Superuser password is not limited
* Router admin access can be forced over HTTPS
* Ping/traceroute functions on router itself
* Can automatically update firmware and security definitions or by time of day/day of week
* Does not require registration to use
* Can turn off all unwanted features
* Stateful firewall with rules that work
* source/dest firewall rules by country
* hit count feature for all the rules (it's simple, cool, effective) (you can see the effect of the rules)
Features it does not have and/or features I do not like
* No Useful firewall logging (either a live window or a specific firewall log that I can find) (good luck figuring out why something is being blocked by your firewall rules)
* No masquerading by IP or MAC
* No Programmable alias definitions for IP addresses and ports
* Each firewall rule is limited to 15 IP or port entries
* Country IP lists are not organized by geographical location (difficult/tedious to block/allow by region)
* WAN addresses not defined by source/dest in firewall
* No firewall feature to silently drop packets
* No VLANs
* Can't configure firewall when to, and when to not log
* No router based incoming anti-virus or malware scanning
* Can't limit router access by IP address (I might be missing it)
* The feature reset button in every window is in a bad spot (lingering usability problem in all Synology UI's IMO) (super easy to reset a feature after you spent 30 minutes configuring)
* External access to port 0 is blocked but not stealthed
After reading everything above, do not hesitate in buying this product. I believe it to be the best, feature rich, company supported, SOHO WIFI router available to date. Hopefully Synology will update its SRM OS to include the features I've listed that it doesn't include (then it would be perfect, and no need for Sophos). In its current form, the RT2600ac can't compete with Sophos (but what router can and also be so easily configurable) but it isn't intended to.
Before settling on the Synology RT6600ax, I also evaluated the Ubiquiti Dream Machine, which is also highly rated by the community. The problem with the DMP is the complexity of setup and overhead is much higher. You do need to setup the Wifi 6 access points separately and the UI is a lot more complex. It wasn't too difficult, but can be overwhelming for the average home user.
The Synology RT6600ax is as simple and as complex as you want it to be. It is reasonably priced for a Triband Wifi 6 router. The coverage and speed are great. But where Synology really shines above the rest of the competition is in the software. The SRM software (v1.3.1 at the moment of writing) is incredibly intuitive to use and the router itself is very responsive. The parental controls are the best of any router I have tested, bar none, and completely free (this saves you at least $50/year alone in subscription fees on some competing systems). You can do the simple route of just specifying "Child" accounts and clicking a few options, or you can go down to fine-grained control of allowing only certain websites at certain times (very useful if you want to allow only, say a particular homework website during certain hours). Setting up separate SSIDs and VLANs for your IoT devices (I hope you are doing this!) requires just a few clicks. Most of the time was spent reconfiguring the many IoT devices to connect to the new SSID. Firewall setup is also as simple as it can be.
The above are just some of the features that matter most to me personally. But there are other features that can be transformative to other home users. For those of you without a Network Attached Storage (NAS), this router comes with a USB port that you can connect an external storage and turn it into a simple networked file storage. It is not a complete replacement for a proper NAS (and Synology makes some of the best of those as well), but for those who do not have complicated needs, it is a great starting option. Finally, for those of you with sizable homes, two or more of these can be connected into a mesh system as needed.
To summarize, this is the best router I have found for the prosumer. If you want to take a step up from the simple plug-and-go routers (or worse, the ISP-provided garbage) of the world, this router is a major step up. I have Synology NAS and now this router. I have every confidence they will continue to improve the already great software and add new capabilities to it.
