The drive works great. Lots of space and quite fast. My backup software (IDrive) thinks it's just fine. It's not quite as fast as smaller drives as it uses QLC technology and is slower especially on large writes, but as I'm using it for backup and not something like gaming, it's great.
Update: After a couple of weeks, the cable started having intermittent failures (like every minute or so). So I got an external enclosure for a SATA drive to a USB C port. Everything has been fine now for over a month.
Update: 6 months later in March 2023. The drive basically just quite working. I'm having to replace it. I was using it as a local backup drive, so I haven't lost anything, but it's very annoying.
I should have realized it sooner, but the symptoms didn't click. For the last couple of months, my PC has been apparently running very slowly. I finally noticed the drive was totally dead, when I tried to run a backup to it, and it was reported as offline.
The drive would appear in the drive list, but any attempt to look at the contents or properties would loop indefinitely until I unplugged the drive. Other work immediately sped up, so I surmise the drive's lack of response was getting in the way of other processes.
Update: April 2023. Samsung support is marvelous. They had me ship the drive back for service. They decided it was unfixable and offered to refund the money I'd spent on the drive. That arrived several days later via ACH (one of three choices they offered - ACH, ZELLE, paper check. The only downside is that their communication was poor. They did not notify me they had found the drive unfixable. I had to contact support again because the link I had been given for my first report was inactive. Support told me that they had declared the drive unfixable and had assigned a new support ticket. That ticket never got updated either. I had to contact support a third time to find out about a new ticket dealing with my refund. In each case the support people were very helpful. I just shouldn't have had to go through that.

The price of the 8TB drive fluctuates so if you don't need a drive urgently and the price is high, you might want to wait and the price may well lower in time.
On the 8TB model, the usable space after formatting is 7.27TB.
I have put all my data on these drives including lots of Steam games. The speed isn't lightning fast but it's definitely faster and smoother than using HDD. So if you can afford it, replace every hard drive in your computer with these drives and don't have any hard drives at all. That's what I did and my PC is noticeably faster and quieter.
These are QLC drives which are not as fast as more expensive drives but they are large capacity for a good price so you can't complain. If you want 8TB and you don't want to pay a fortune, don't even bother looking at the competition. There isn't any. Samsung is the King of good price, large capacity SSDs.
First of all, people complaining about non sustained peak speeds, it's obvious, it's a QLC ssd (quad level cell) which are hella cheap but comes with lower speeds (due to the same cell now storing 16 possible values, 4bit value) and durability issues, which translates to, it has a lower no of write cycles before the ssd fails... Then why did I go for it, well, simply because my use case is for using it as a dump to keep all my XSX games on and that means I don't constantly delete old games whenever I buy a new one (owing to it's sheer size of 8tb)
That means I'm not going to be cycling the written portions of the ssd that often, and more often than not I'll be using to run games of off which is read only and hence for my use case it's perfect balance price and performance.
And regarding the lower speeds, samsung has done a good optimization where in a sizeable part of the ssd acts as an slc (single level cell) cache, around 40 - 50 GB, which means if your writes are within that limit then you'll get the blazing fast speeds of 2.8Gbps ~ 350MBps after which it'll drop down to ~1.1 Gbps ~ 140MBps. Also keep in mind give the ssd some time after this as it'll rearrange the psuedo slc data to qlc cells more efficiently and get you back your space
So it's not your ssd which is performing bad, it's just a limitation of qlc flashes, that need to store 16 different values in each cell which takes time and hence are slow, but it's cheap for that exact reason.
So, in conclusion, this is a great ssd with sufficient write and read speeds (reads are constantly done at 2.8+ Gbps as there's no limit to that) and good enough longevity if you understand the ssd technologies and their limitations. Please consider your use case, if it's going to dump a bunch of content (games, movies, installers) on the ssd and mostly just read them all the time then this is the ssd for you, but if you want to write large amounts of data on a daily basis with frequently clearing out old ones to make space for new writeable content, then this is going to last you less and you may even run into data loss due to corruption.
