About this ebook

Protecting the innocent comes at a cost, and what seems to be a sleepy, quiet town is anything but.

“A compelling story that touches on powerful social issues” Bookbub Reviewer

NY Times & USA Today bestselling author Lorhainne Eckhart brings you the first book in a new crossover series! The social worker and the cop, an unlikely couple drawn together on a small, secluded Pacific Northwest island where nothing is as it seems.

Billy-Jo McCabe never expected to become a social worker, considering the broken system nearly destroyed her. Shortly after she takes a job on a remote Pacific Northwest island, she gets a call about a missing girl.

Meanwhile Roche Harbor detective Mark Friessen is called in to investigate the disappearance, but instead of working with the newly appointed social worker, he ends up butting heads and clashing with her every step of the way. Billy-Jo becomes the rival he does his best to avoid, considering the only conversations they have involve her pointing out his shortcomings and arrogance.

But when Billy-Jo finds herself in over her head, she’s forced to team up with the man who has the uncanny ability to bring out the worst in her and together, they come up against close-mouthed locals, island secrets that hit too close to home, and the realization that their case about finding and helping a young girl has turned into something far more sinister.

I read other books in this series before reading this one and now it became easy to understand the love/hate between Mark and Billy Jo and why this story ends with so many unanswered questions. Child abuse is something that adults should prevent and fight against, and never promote, in this story every situation has an appropriate ending that is most questionable and that is the way society seems to work. A challenging theme and an issue of our time put together in a good story.

Twisted realities Billy Jo McCabe is a new to the island social worker. Trying to go yo bat for kids who had a rough time in the foster system like she herself did might not make her friends. Billy Jo got a lucky break in a bad situation and ended up getting adopted. As she and a certain annoying detective butt heads, then reluctantly work together, a trail is uncovered the has dark implications. Can they unravel the situation and all related complications? Feels like a bitter taste might be left behind for both the detective and the social worker. What happens when bridges are burnt at thr beginning of a difficult career? Looking forward to reading the next adventures, the dreading the darkness that seems to have real world reflections.

Fascinating start to what I’m sure is going to be a compelling new series. For fans of the McCabes and the Friessens, it’s exciting to read more about Billy Jo McCabe and Mark Friessen. The storyline touches on powerful social issues, including human trafficking, that will not always be comfortable to read about as it will often draw out an emotional response. Billy Jo and Mark are strong-minded characters with rough edges that start out striking sparks, but there’s something there that will definitely pique your interest in watching how things play out for the two of them. It’s a fast-paced read that will pull you in at the start and keep you turning pages until the end, which will leave you anxious for what’s to come as this is just the beginning to what promises to be a captivating story.
