The speeds are incredible and I’ve used SSD on my builds for the past 9 years and am blown away by how much faster these drives perform compared. The speed, physical size, and capacity are impressive and the price while higher than 2.5 inch SSD’s are pretty reasonable for what you get in performance.
This is the first build I’ve used only solid state drives for all of my in build storage and this drive definitely helps to keep things snappy. If you’re on a budget then there isn’t a need to use this over a SSD. The real world performance you’ll see is improved but the jump from HDD to SSD is already huge and enough for most. You’ll be better off spending less and getting a TB in storage if you’re on a budget. If you you’re willing to spend a bit more then it is easy to recommend this drive.
I still have Samsung SSDs from the very early days of SSDs and they run great - I use them more for caching drives or storage arrays these days, but they continue to run great.
This drive is being used for render work (animation and video). The PCIe speeds are blazing fast, and that makes a huge different in run times. I wish the price weren't so high for 1TB and above, but at least I do get what I pay for.
My drive idles at 45C and on writes the temperature goes up. I have installed an NVMe heatsink on it, the kind that wraps around (versus the kind that just glues to the top). This buys more time before thermal throttling hit due to temperature.
One thing to keep in mind is that the rated speeds that are posted on most gaming SSDs (at least with Samsung) are for burst writes. That speed drops significantly for sustained writes. Meaning large file copy operations will show slower overall speeds. You would need to buy Enterprise rated SSDs at x4 to x10 the price if that is what you need. With game loads you would want burst speeds anyway. The other problem with NVMe is that by being smaller it reduces how much heat they can dissipate, which also limits large file copy operations. It is an inherent limitation.

The switch from the built in Seagate brand hard drive to this Samsung 970 Pro M.2 was easy as all it required was a couple of screws and a handy piece of Samsung software. While I did have an issue with the screw ASUS used to hold the M.2 in place being loctite'd in place once I finally removed the screw (Which had now become striped and unusable), found a replacement screw in my cabinet and popped it into place the rest was smooth like butter.
Samsung offers data migration software on their website that seamlessly cloned my existing hard drive to the M.2 (This software only works with Samsung drives) and took less than an hour to clone over 300 gigs. Once the drive was cloned I had to go into disk management and enable the drive because it was now running the same ID as the Seagate drive and only one can be activated under that ID at a time, rebooted the laptop and pressed F2 to get into the BIOS, continued to the advanced settings and selected the Boot Sequence and selected the Samsung drive as the primary and finally selected Save & Exit. The initial boot from the M.2 took longer than any subsequent boots as is expected when first being initialized but now my boot time has decreased from between 2-5 minutes to on average about 27 seconds. It is now quicker to come from a full power down into Windows then it was to wake a powered on Windows from sleep mode before which means I save not only on energy from not having to leave my laptop running but on wear and tear on the devices from having it running 24/7.
My system benchmark nearly doubled when tested with the PerformanceTest software and raised my score from below average (2252 compared to the average of 2573) to being in the 86th percentile (Score of 4506) with no other system tweaking.
This drive is well worth the investment and will save you both time and money.
