The map is MASSIVE. I was surprised at how seldom I bump into other players, and most are cordial, if not helpful. You can play this game solo or team up with your friends or occasionally the other player(s) you might meet along the way. You can spend the first several hours (or don't) chasing around a series of holotapes left behind like a trail of breadcrumbs from the Vault 76's Overseer. Along the way you’ll find several holotapes (or stories) from other survivor groups that didn't make it, e.g., the responders, fire-breathers, raiders, and many more. There's no shortage of left behind robots and computers that can provide you with missions. One in particular is Rose, a nannybot-turned-raider. Sure, she's no Curie from F04, but still enjoyable with the darker fallout humor.
This is a survival game, with several metrics you must monitor in order to stay alive. It does require a different playing style than what you’d typically expect from FPS and/or RPG. You must be more conservative with your ammo or scrounge around looting and scrapping to make more bullets and repair your weapons after nearly every conflict. Leveling up does require a fair amount of grinding, if that’s what you want to do. 76 also introduces new creatures that make the dreaded Deathclaw look tame.
Many reviewers have complained about a lack of story, that it's boring, no "Human" NPCs, etc. But I strongly disagree, it has plenty of stories scattered all over the Appalachian wasteland. True, you won't find another living "human" NPC character, and I'm good with that.
Understand that you are emerging from the safety of your vault for the first time into a post-apocalyptic world, and to your horror, you discover that all human survivors (non-vault dwellers) are either mutated into the Scorched or dead. It is a lonely, radiated world after all.
Taking a chance after the EOS disaster I pre-ordered Fallout 76. I am so happy I did! It actually is FALLOUT (just online). I am having a blast with this game- so much so I ordered it on Xbox as well. Something I've never done- immediately bought two versions.
As a Fallout player I'm not used to multi-player PVP. Hate it in fact. Had a group of friends I had planned to play with but never found them; oh well. Decided to go it alone. I've been playing for about a month now and none of that has been a problem. I'm a level 25, claimed and defended several workshops, gotten so many suits of power armor I'm giving them away, only gotten one quest I couldn't complete (only because I wasn't level 25 yet which the game warned me about beforehand but now that I'm high enough I'm going back to finish it). All of that playing alone and being a somewhat mediocre player (if I'm in over my head I RUN and hide lol). Last Friday night there where THREE other players on the map (playing solo) and I never ran into them. In fact I never run into people. Occasionally at the robot vendors but mainly it's the first one you come across. The only interaction with another person I've had was last night a player motioned to me to follow her and she took me to a bobble head I'd missed. We "thumbs up" each other and went our separate ways.
The quests are fun. The ones I gave myself were fun (farming power armor and fusion cores lol). Base building is a blast- it's different than F4 because you unlock things as you go but you start with the basics. YOU CAN BUILD ANYWHERE!!! I am a cliff dweller. I've built camps in cliff sides and in ponds and streams. LOVE the freedom of that!!!
I can see how it might get a little lonely. Fallout 3 and New Vegas had great story lines and awesome NPCs. Running into people was an enormous part of the game. I do miss that but I would rather have nothing that the repetition of F4's NPC 's (no I'm not here "to spy on you" I'm the one who built this place and I don't care another settlement needs my help).
If you're just playing to grief people then don't bother. There are places for that ("Hunter vs Hunted" events??? but I've never participated). If someone tries to initiate PVP and you don't want to just ignore them. They get nothing out of it but lost ammo, a bounty on their heads and losing their caps. You might lose some junk if you just stand there and willingly be their bullet sponge. Bonus you'll respawn with full health and a little lighter haha. I haven't had many glitches on PC nor Xbox. The last day of the Beta my hunger wouldn't refill but no biggie. We just had a huge update Monday but haven't had problems either way. Overall I LOVE this game. If you are a Fallout fan don't miss out on this gem because it's not Rust.
FYI- I played F4 on survival to "prepare" for F76 since I figured it might be similar. I don't like survival modes. Hunger, thirst, no fast travel, ammo and chems have weight. I didn't get past Concord. Didn't like it. This has those elements but not so bad- you can fast travel but it costs (except to the vault and your camp- so I strategically place my camps). You have hunger and thirst and all (including chems have weight) so COMBINE things- soups satisfy hunger, thirst and restore health plus give perks like Rad Resistance or PER+ or increased agility or strength so PLAN accordingly).
Don't haul around ammo you don't use. Swap out perks your not using for ones you do- don't waste a lock picking perk when you're not actually picking a lock. A vendor isn't the answer to everything. Their caps and supply only restock periodically (24 hrs???) so you have to loot and drop. Scrap weapons you don't want instead of selling them- you unlock upgrades (mods) that way. There are story lines- good ones- you have to find them in the quests. I read the bad comments and people are either upset it is Fallout 4 or it isn't Fallout 4. Survival or not. We were officially told it isn't Fallout 5. It isn't. I've more than gotten my $120 (for both platforms I purchased) out of it already and I'll be playing it A WHILE :)
