I played Battlefield 2 until I dreamt of the load music, I loved BFBC2, and BF3 and BF4 have special places in my heart. Then I plaed Battlefield 1, and I loooooved the accuracy -- especially since I had just finished listening to Blueprints for Armageddon from Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (You NEED to listen to this if you haven't already), but I just couldn't get into the game play.
It was rough, and I really only put in 20 hours within a two year span.
Then the Battlefield V trailer was realeased, and I just wasn't very excited. It didn't really speak to me, and I expected to not get the game for a while, but once the game was released, I kept hearing people talk about it.
I decided to buy it when it was on sale, and I have been extremely pleased the with the game. I put 20 hours into it in only a week or two, and I expect that this game will have quite a bit of longevity -- provided DICE provides continual content for a while.
On the other hand, Frontlines turns the battlefield into a cat-and-mouse game: the two teams compete for a central control point, where the party that gets the point changes into the attacking party and has to destroy points at the opponent. However, the amount of respawns that the attacking party receives is limited. If the attacking party fails to destroy the points, the central point will open again and the defending party will have the opportunity to strike back.
The new modes are nice additions, but Conquest is and remains the classic Battlefield mode. With 64 players on a battlefield warfare still feels as epic and chaotic as it did in previous parts. In addition, small tweaks in the gameplay cause major changes. The most noticeable is that of the revive system. Medics can still help everyone within the team, but this is no longer a matter of course. Someone reviving takes time, so you also risk your own life every time. Squad mates can also help each other back on the leg, but this takes longer and also carries more risk.
Another pleasant addition is that of Fortifications. Destruction is central to Battlefield and in the newest part that is no different. The danger is that there is nothing left to hide behind. With Fortifications this is solved: at pre-specified locations soldiers can now lay sandbags, build ammunition and health points, place barbed wire and thus better defend a position. In addition, the game rewards players with extra XP to build the Fortifications, or as a counterparty to destroy them. In this way, everyone can contribute to the defense of control points, even if you do not fall within the Medic or Support class.
Of course we all know that the single player in Battlefield is just a taste of what will come in the multiplayer. In Battlefield 5 that is no different, because the real action breaks loose online. The main focus is the Grand Operations, an amalgamation of different modes and the natural evolution of the 'multi-day' Operations we met in Battlefield 1.
During the Grand Operations you travel to different fronts to fight for several days against the Axis or Allies. At the time of the release, all of this takes place on four fronts: in the Netherlands you play at the levels Rotterdam and Devastation, in France at Twisted Steel and Arras, in North Africa at Hamada and Aerodrome and in Norway at Narvik and Fjell 652. Each operation starts with the Airborne mode, where the attacking party is dropped over the battlefield by aircraft and makes an attempt to blow up several points. The subsequent 'days' during the operation then consist of other modes, with the chance that this will result in a last man standing fight after the third day.
The structure of the Grand Operations is very cool, with the initial air invasion followed by the heavy fights on the ground. Unfortunately, there is a lack of feeling. In Battlefield 1, the Operations got their own character through the stories that were told in advance from soldiers who entered the battle there. In Battlefield 5 that has been replaced by just a few sentences on your screen. Sad, since it was precisely those stories that were able to charm me in the pastor. It is also clear that there is still quite a bit of work to do in the field of balancing. When a team is obviously too strong on the first day of the operation, it is almost useless to continue fighting. Coming back after a bad first day is almost impossible.
Your unity, your style
Since personalization in games every year seems to be bigger and more important, EA Dice also makes it more important in the form of The Company. The Company is a new addition in which you adjust the various soldiers within your unit from head to toe. It is not only about what weapons you carry with you, but also how you look on the battlefield. Indeed: shooting someone in fashion has become almost as important as survival.
On both sides of the war you can personalize soldiers, with a different soldier for each class. This makes it possible to have eight completely different soldiers, including their own outfit and loadout. You do not only have a choice of different jackets and pants, but also different characters, each with its own appearance and voice. The choice consists of men and women, which we can only applaud.
You can also adjust everything in the area of your loadout. First of all, there is of course your primary weapon, which gets the bulk of all adjustments. So it is not only possible to put another scope on your weapon, but also give all parts their own color and style. In addition, it is of course just again possible to bring various secondary weapons and tools to the battlefield.
Nice leveling
A striking addition to the series are some light RPG elements that the game entails. This is how the game Combat Roles introduces: different roles that have an impact on how your soldier behaves on the battlefield. So you as Medic can choose between a more team-driven approach, or more like lone wolf to get started. With that first sprint you can speed up when you have to save a teammate, while you sprint faster in the lone wolf version when you are in a critical condition.
In the area of weapons, your expertise with different guns plays a more important role in the form of an adjusted progression system. Now when you raise a skill level with a specific weapon, the game offers you the possibility to apply 'perks' to that weapon. Think of perks that ensure that you reload faster, your bullets have less spread or they travel longer distances faster. It can make the difference between a very stable or completely detached weapon.
Your expertise comes into play because you first have to level a specific weapon before you can select new perks. This way the game prevents players from immediately optimizing the weapon as soon as they get the chance. The difference between new and experienced players is thus a lot clearer, but this compensates Dice by completely equipping the start weapon of each class.
Good:
- Game feels great, gunplay is awesome!
- Visuals are stunning
- The Company offers many personalization options
- Tweaks in the multiplayer have a lot of impact on the gameplay
- Experience pays off more than items
Meh:
- War Stories are short and have too much focus on stealth
- Game still needs quite a bit of balancing
- Features that are being withheld
- The UI for kitting out your characters. Split into axis and allies you can spend hours trying to find menus and customization that need to be done in the menu not during matches.
