Editorial Reviews
By The Way, I Forgive You is not an album about forgiveness in the easy sense where someone has hurt you and then suddenly there's a great reconciliation and a remorse filled scene with two people running across the golden wheatfield towards an embrace that somehow undoes a lifetime of pain and damage, as if the past has no meaning. It's about radical acceptance (not to be confused with complacency) and unconditional love.

Looking back at the past five albums that Brandi has produced with her band mates and songwriting team Phil and Tim Hanseroth, they have combined their musical tastes as one and it definitely shows on the ten songs on the record. If one were too simply hear the lyrics they are stories that resonate of experiences, especially “The Mother,” “Harder to Forgive,” and the single “The Joke.” And more so, there are tinges of the past in the melodies that bear similarities to musical storytellers like Loggins and Messina, the Nashville corners of Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristoferson, and several others of the late 1960s and 1970s but with the 21st century touch “Fulton Country Jane Doe,” “Sugartooth.” But the last track “Party of One” is memorable.
There is no doubt, with accolades and critical acclaims and nominations of her past notable records from “The Story” to “The Firewatchers’s Daughter,” Brandi Carlile continues to churn her songwriter creations into that special knack of telling a story through her music.
The album features 10 tracks, all of which showcase Carlile's songwriting skills and emotive vocals. The lyrics are introspective and personal, and the music is a blend of folk, rock, and Americana. Standout tracks include the title track, "By the Way, I Forgive You," as well as "The Joke" and "Harder to Forgive."
Overall, "By the Way, I Forgive You" is a beautifully crafted and emotionally powerful album that showcases Carlile's talent as a musician and songwriter. Whether you are a fan of Carlile's work or are simply looking for a new artist to discover, this album is definitely worth checking out. So, it would be a great gift for a vinyl record collector.
With that aside, I can't express just how grateful I am to Brandi and the twins for KILLING it again. 'By the way, I forgive you' is an incredibly special album. It seems to get better and better with each listen. I heard 'Every Time I Hear That Song' in December 2017 on YouTube shortly after receiving an apology letter from someone I had not associated with in 6 years. I was a little surprised to see that it was the first song on the album as I feel it would have been a great last song. Then again, forgiveness should be prioritized. We shouldn't wait until "the end" to forgive ourselves or to forgive others.
The first time I listened to the album all the way through in my car, 'Hold Out Your Hand' was playing, and I kid you not-- everyone in the truck ahead of me held out their hands for the duration of the song. My windows were up, but I'd like to imagine they were listening to the song in their truck, too. :) Thanks again for another beautiful album.

I've never heard any of her other music, but this album is exceptionally well written. Between the music and her lyrics she draws on emotions and themes that most anyone (including myself) would be able to relate to in some way - love, heartache, empathy, encouragement, forgiveness - and there is something about her voice that reaches into the soul. There is some great creativity in her chord progressions and throughout the album I never lost interest in what was going on in the music.
Overall: It's relatable and uplifting. It's tender and intimate. It draws inspiration from both the light and the dark. And most of all, I can tell that this album came from her heart. Tougher music critics may think me too easily impressed, but in my opinion this album gets five stars and deserves every one.
I love you Brandi, and look forward to hear you sing in concert❤️
