Editorial Reviews

UK five CD box that rounds up all of Mungo Jerry's recordings for the Dawn label between 1970-74. Disc one is the debut Mungo Jerry album which hit #13 in the UK and #14 in Germany. Now comes with four bonus cuts including the rare Italian only 45 'Santo Antonio Santo Francisco'. The second CD contains the Electronically Tested album which hit #14 in the UK charts back in 1970 and includes the world-wide #1 'In The Summertime' which sold over 30 million singles. Also included is the UK #1 'Baby Jump' (Germany #11) whilst the #5 hit 'Lady Rose' is amongst the bonus tracks, as is the previously non-CD USA version of 'Have A Whiff On Me'. The UK #13 hit single 'You Don't Have To Be In The Army' is the lead track on the band's third album which now comes with four bonus tracks including three rare album session out-takes. Disc four is the legendary Boot Power album. The single versions of '46 And On' and 'Open Up' (UK #21, Germany #28) have been added as a bonus. The fifth disc is the Long Legged Woman album which was more a collection of non-LP singles and B-sides than a proper album. Includes the UK hits 'Long Legged Woman Dressed In Black' (#13) and 'Alright Alright Alright' (UK #3, Germany #12) as well as the German hit single 'Wild Love'. The booklet contains liner notes by Alan Clayson plus stacks of picture sleeves from around the globe to get the collectors updating their "wants" lists!

Top reviews from the United States

Mungo Jerry may have been something of a one-hit wonder in the US, but the group had several international hits- and at least two very good U.S. album releases. (Might they have had more if their U.S. label, Janus, hadn't folded?) This set very effectively covers their recordings while on the Pye subsidiary Dawn, and the compilers took care to make it comprehensive. For example, the US (on Memoirs of a Stockbroker) & the UK (Electronically Tested) contained different versions of "Have A Whiff On Me"; this set contains both. And while Ray Dorset is the face of Mungo Jerry, the band was arguably at its best when Paul King & Colin Earl were in it, which was during much of the Pye/Dawn years. [AND it's even available at a bargain for a five CD set]

Bottom line: Perhaps the best jug band/skiffle music group ever. (With a transition to a harder electric sound on Boot Power) Much better musicians than you might guess, and lots of fun, well-made music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Coffret complet de Mungo Jerry
Reviewed in France on December 20, 2017
Encore du plaisir avec le chantant « Follow me down » ou l’harmonieux « Memoirs of a stockbroker » puis le sautillant « You better leave that whiskey alone ». L’album se termine par l’incontournable « Coming back to you when the time comes ». De nombreux bonus complètent ce CD dont « Man behind the piano » bonne face b de « Baby jump » et le super hit « Lady Rose » (#05 UK en 1971). Excellent CD (5*).
Le troisième album « You don’t have to be in the army » sorti en 1971 n’a pas eu le succès escompté malgré de nombreux bons morceaux dont le hit « You don’t have to be in the army » (#13 UK), « Take me back », « Hey Rosalyn » ou « On a Sunday ».

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mighty Mighty Collection
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2017
After the Dawn Singles Collection comes the Dawn Albums Collection, the most definitive & complete Mungo Jerry compilation to date surpassing all others, even the 3 CD / 65 track Baby Jump Anthology from 2008. This set consists of 5 Studio Albums, 81 songs featuring 23 bonus tracks, all the hit singles including the album & single versions of Open Up, Lady Rose, 46 & On & My Girl & Me. As well as a booklet containing extensive liner notes & photos of their 7" Single Picture Sleeves this is a must have for all ardent fans of Mungo Jerry.
Mungo Jerry were the ultimate good time band & the greatest ever exponents of the Jugband/Barrelhouse music meets Rock n Roll sound. They came across like some weird & wonderful mix of Jesse Fuller, Chuck Berry & Marc Bolan all rolled into one & were far more prolific in their output (as this box set proves) than similar sounding groups such as The Mixtures, Bronx Cheer & Terry Dactyl & the Dinosaurs. They played a huge part in painting the musical landscape of the early-mid 70s in the UK with hit after hit of beautifully crafted, infectiously catchy, if not always politically correct, feel good pop songs. Songs such as In the Summertime (7 weeks at No 1 in 1970), Lady Rose, the Faces-inspired 46 and On, Mighty Man & Baby Jump (covered so brilliantly by Dr Feelgood some years later) hold a timeless quality whilst simultaneously helping to define the decade. Of the albums contained in this box set Electronically Tested is probably regarded as their best & is the album that showcases their trademark sound the most. It features their 2 biggest hit singles as well as firm favourites such as She Rowed, You Better Leave That Whiskey Alone & a raucous foot stompin cover of I Wanna Make Love To You that holds a closer resemblance to the Edgar Broughton Band than Willie Dixon. YDHTBITA is Mungo Jerrys ultimate good time album despite the Dylan-esque opening title track. The album consists of elements of rock n roll, blues, gospel & trad folk played in their distinctive style & includes the feel good song On a Sunday which could have easily been re-titled In the Summertime Part 2. The box set concludes with Long Legged Woman, an album almost entirely inspired by Rock n Roll (no doubt influenced by the rock n roll revival that occurred in the UK at this time) and features a non stop procession of raucous ravers such as Glad I'm a Rocker, Gonna Bop til I Drop, Don't Stop, Little Miss Hipshake & the psychedelic garage rocker No Girl Reaction. Along with the hit singles Long Legged Woman Dressed in Black & Wild Love this album is a fitting way to complete the set.

Mungo Jerry were one of the popular bands of the 1970's, with a vast range of musical styles including rock, blues, hillbilly and country. I highly enjoyed this CD box set and the music got better as I got through the set. Now I'm tempted to get the next Mungo Jerry box set. Mungo Jerry's music is bouncey and catchy with lines that are easy to remember. Faye Hathaway may not like Mungo Jerry, but I don't care. They are a brilliant band.
