Editorial Reviews

On September 29th, Ibeyi will release Ash via XL Recordings. Their first album, the eponymous Ibeyi, grappled with the past—the sister’s relationship, origins, loss, and roots. It earned them fans and collaborators in some of the most iconic and crucial artists of today, Beyoncé and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre included. By contrast, Ash is a more visceral and potent political statement, and while firmly rooted in Afro-Cuban culture and history, finds itself entirely concerned with Ibeyi’s present: Who Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi are, what’s important to them, and how they live today, especially given that the spheres, both personally and politically, are entirely different from when Ibeyi was recorded. It’s also a testament to their cathartic live performances, where they’re able to transmute a vast array of emotions—sorrow, anger, sensuality, happiness—to and through their fans. Ash is also a study in deft electronic production. Ibeyi worked once again alongside XL head Richard Russell, a confidante and friend, to produce Ash at his studio. “We absolutely wanted, 100%, to work with him again: It was not even a question,” Lisa-Kaindé says. “Richard is an amazing producer...wherever you want to go, he will guide you there. But it feels like you’re playing with him. You’re sharing ideas together and he has an amazing ear. It’s like a flow, it’s really easy.” To that effect, Naomi adds: “It’s like we produced the album too, actually, and it’s a good feeling.” Along with Russell’s stylized production sensibilities, Ibeyi drew from a host of influences ranging from Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, Meshell Ndegeocello, Erykah Badu and Nina Simone and beyond, to craft the wide-ranging musical landscape of Ash.

I have one word to describe this album; POWERFUL. As I listened to No Man Is Big Enough For My Arms, I began to cry. It was so moving and hearing Michelle Obama's voice was just too much for me. It is particularly timely that the week I received Ash in the mail, was the week so many woman found the courage to come forward about their sexual abuse and harassment at the hands of powerful and entitled men. Deathless also struck a chord.

The women in Ibeyi have these breathless, beautiful voices and are true poets. I am excited to share this find with friends and family. Thanks to public radio for bringing this amazing group to my attention!

The process was smoorh and quick

I could not love this album any more than I already do; it's quickly become one of my favorites! I have been listening to it for days, and it is so uplifting, empowering, and varied. These two 22 year olds have amazing talent and integrate their cultural backgrounds into their music beautifully. Truly interesting and creative. I even bought a copy for my mom!

The first time I heard them was on NPR's Here and Now. I feel in love with them, so unique and hauntingly beautiful. Cant describe the genre folk? mystical? I don't know but when you hear the, you will be hooked. Thanks Here and Now.

I would love Ibeyi's new album but for its over-reliance on auto-tune on many of the tracks. Sisters Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Diaz have such gorgeous, expressive voices that electronic accoutrements like auto-tune are unnecessary and clutter the overall sound. Nonetheless, I can't get enough of the Diaz sisters, especially Lisa-Kaindé, whose vocals are rawly emotional, often plaintive, yet so delicate and lilting. "Ash" lacks the simplicity and spareness of their first album, but it speaks just as directly to its audience. Both singers continue to channel their rich fusion of Cuban, West African and West Indian musical cultures, and yet remain true to each throughout this album. Their music is in no way a synthetic Worldbeat blend so common these days. Rather, it is pure and often powerful, and Lisa-Kaindé's lyrics, touching on both body and spirit, and what it means to be young and black in a world not yet equal, are moving throughout. There are many fine songs here, buffeted by exquisite sisterly harmonies. But, to me, "Transmission/Michaelion," featuring the narration of Meshell Ndegeocello, stands out as a tour de force.

I'm obsessed with this band, I'll be honest. But lemme tell you, this album is solid from beginning to end. Ibeyi is so uniquely talented and they just have song after song that you can't help but appreciate. Worth the money

Their previous work had left higher expectations. This one is less tribal and way more electronic and monotonous. When I got it I listened to it once and never even felt like doing it again.
I love the first one, too bad this is not even comparable.

Un album à avoir dans votre collection, des belles voix envoûtantes et des mélodies magnifiques, une ambiance magique qui reflète des femmes fortes. Des rythmes presque indigènes et planants.
La pochette est aussi très intéressante, arrivé bien emballé.

5.0 out of 5 stars jetzt habe ich die zweite CD, leider gibt es nicht mehr
Reviewed in Germany on February 5, 2020

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved their haunting sound
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 16, 2018
I first heard about Ibeyi from a piece used by Alvin Ailey (Dance Company). Loved their haunting sound. Now have both their albums and it is definitely regularly played in this house. They are hard to categorise - I kinda feel you just have to listen ....
