The Beach Boys, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. An unlikely combination? No, it is a melding of beautifully crafted and complex harmonies with spot on harmonics of a fantastic orchestra.

It’s kind of like mixing the Mona Lisa with Monet’s Waterlillies. Completely different but both classics.

And so it is with this combination. Exquisite Harmonies blended with superb harmonics of a classic orchestra. The orchestra accompaniment is subtle but powerful in the way that it complements The Beach Boys sound.

Being a lifelong Beach Boys fan, ( since 1962 ) I can tell that some of the vocals were brought forward and isolated slightly more than the originals on some of the cuts- hey I’m not complaining- I love hearing different nuances from the Boys of summer. ( in other words mixed differently from the originals ).
There is no other musical group on the planet that could get by and sound superb even without music ( acapella ).

But add a stupendous orchestra such as the Royal Philharmonic and you have “ hair raising on the back of your neck “ enjoyment.

The Beach Boys are probably one of the most underrated and under appreciated bands in history.
I could never understand why. When the Beatles came onto the scene- somehow people viewed The Beach Boys as unhip and corny.

I doubt that there has ever been a song recorded in the Rock realm that is better than “ Good Vibrations “
It sounds as fresh and as relevant now than it did in 1966. ( Glen Campbell, who played on Good Vibrations commented that it was the best Rock and roll song he had ever heard ).

This version just adds a new texture to it.
Casual fans of the Beach Boys will probably think “ Oh well, nothing new here”

But those who appreciate perfection and beautiful sounds will find this collection truly jaw dropping.

Five Stars

I had to vacillate a little between scoring this as a 3 or 4 star review. Let me provide this proviso: I am a Beach Boys and Wilson brothers fan. OK, yes, I do own all the solo works of Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston and Mike Love, but they are in a different category. I was interested in this recording because, despite Brian's acknowledged prowess and experimental fervor, I always thought he would have benefited from someone (besides Murray) who could give him some assistance and guidance with orchestration and production, much like John and Paul enjoyed with George Martin. Darian Sahanaja has provided significant contributions to much of Brian's more recent output and live performances. I had hoped this recording would also make interesting and unique contributions to some of the Beach Boys earlier works, and indeed at times it did: the addition of French Horns to DON"T WORY, BABY, a Copelandish approach to SLOOP JOHN B and cello, orchestration and additional voices on HEROS AND VLLAINS (I really wanted them to make this one more Gershwin inspired). The crowning achievement of this project is their enriching of DISNEY GIRLS, the longest selection on this project. I've always loved this song, whether done by the BBs or Art Garfunkel, but the orchestration and arrangement of this little number by Bruce Johnston blew me away. Seriously, it made me misty. Now, having said all that, I felt this project was uneven and left a lot of opportunities unexplored. Frankly, some of the arrangements were just plain sappy and unnecessary, and didn't add anything to the originals- some were that subtle- or actually debased them by making them sound a little like elevator music or an easy listening cover. They missed a great opportunity with their preludes to many of the songs, where they could have used the intervening music to tie together many of the songs into a cohesive whole. Instead we often had to suffer through light orchestrations that felt like they were only minimally related to the following BB recording.

So, 3 stars for not dismal but unsatisfactory results on many songs and the project overall, but 4 stars for the portions that were a positive contribution to the greater Beach Boys catalog. I don't regret buying it and would recommend it to BB fans like myself, but, I'm wondering what Chip Davis would do if he was in charge of a production like this.

I was afraid the orchestra would use this project as an excuse to pile it on or show off.
It did neither. Their overdubbing is classy and relatively sparse. Really solid job!
