Editorial Reviews
Two CD edition. 2017 live release from the legendary British band. Almost five decades ago, the toll of a bell and rolling thunder marked the conception of an ear splittingly monolithic riff. In that moment, Black Sabbath and the sound of heavy metal were forged. The band embarked on what Ozzy describes as the most incredible adventure you could think of, a journey that would go on to define a genre. The End is a celebration of Black Sabbath's final hometown concert at Birmingham's Genting Arena on February 4th, 2017. With a hit packed set list including 'Iron Man', 'Paranoid', 'War Pigs', and many more, the high production values, visual effects, and pyrotechnics wowed fans, as the band delivered the most emotionally charged show in their history.

The sound is, by far, the best sounding of all the live Sabbath releases. Geezer's sound is not buried or muddied and each instrument sounds crisp in the mix. Ozzy put in an incredible performance and was engaged in every song. Tony is always spot on and this night's performance is no exception. Tommy Clufetos also puts in a good performance and his sound is not diminished in the mix.
To comment briefly, yes, I would have loved to have heard/seen Bill Ward. I was happy/saddened to hear the band discuss this in the video. I'd read some of the back and forth previously and there really is no answer. Pick a side if you'd like but I was glad that the band addressed it. The band's pick of Tommy Clufetos is a good choice to me. He reminds me, physically, of a young Bill Ward and his drumming style is closer to Bill's than previous Sabbath drummers: Vinnie Appice, Bev Bevan, Eric Singer, Bobby Rondinelli, Cozy Powell (am I missing anyone? probably). Anyways, Tommy is a good choice and put in a solid performance.
Song List
Overall: This is what the band was playing on their final world tour so I'm fine with it. It leans heavily on their first four albums and completely ignores Never Say Die, 13, and every album without Ozzy on vocals. The fact that they were playing this set every night is apparent in their comfort, prowess, and tightness of every song.
Black Sabbath: Great opener! Taking it back to the first track from their first album. What a way to open!
Fairies Wear Boots: One of my all time favorite songs. My personal high point of seeing Ozzy on the Speak of the Devil tour.
After Forever: Tight performance of this nugget from Master of Reality. I was pleasantly surprised to hear this on the 1999 tour and glad to hear it here. Shining performance from the band.
Into the Void: killer riff and nice interplay between the band. Blows away the performance on Cross Purposes Live.
Snowblind: Another favorite (I could probably say that of every song!). Ozzy sounds good and Tony sparkles! Replaces Live At Last as my favorite version.
War Pigs: I love the irony of Ozzy using the harmonies that Ronnie James Dio originally added to the song. Still, Ozzy does it great and we have another masterful performance.
Behind the Wall of Sleep: Truer to the album version than the Reunion (and early live performances) that included a jazzy jam at the end. I was surprised when I first heard it but loved the segue into NIB.
NIB: complete with Geezer bass solo! The bass solo included the wah wah which has been a pretty cool change from the original studio release. Tony's guitar soars.
Medley: an all too brief Supernaut - reminiscent of the teasing intro to Paranoid from the 1999 tour in Atlanta. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath tease - again, one of the teases that the band would use to intro Paranoid. Still love the album version of SBS; Ozzy's soundcheck version on Speak of the Devil and Tony Martin's growling version are still sub-standard. If I need an alternative version, I'll pull out the Anthrax single! Megalomania was a great inclusion! I half expected Symptom of the Universe but was very pleasantly surprised to hear Megalomania. A good length jam on the riff!
Rat Salad: part of the medley, IMO, and great segue into the drum solo. I'm not a big fan of drum solos but I thought it was kinda cool that the band gave Tommy a time to shine. He is mostly ignored in most of the video footage so it was good to see him taking front and center for a little bit.
Iron Man: booming riffs and sparkling performance by everyone. One of those songs that the band "has to" perform yet this performance does not sound tired or routine, but energetic and vibrant.
Dirty Woman: This song shows why Tony is the riffmaster! Wow! This song was on the theatrical release but not on the BluRay! Man, you can still hear the soaring notes but I can still recall the theater release even with the cheesy angles (Call 'em cheesy but I loved them!). That video needs to be released, it is tremendous!!!
Children of the Grave: Oh no, is it really ending? Good version, Ozzy goes back to the original lyrics as opposed to the minor tweaks he did during his years of performing. Would have loved to hear the guitar warble with the whispered "Children of the Grave" as Ozzy did on at least one solo occasion. Still, it is great to see the camaraderie of the original members.
Paranoid: The perennial closing track. Glad to hear Ozzy's call and response which made the ending last a bit longer.
The outro of Zeitgeist was not included and really isn't necessary. Only a snippet from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage; but almost the entire Paranoid album. The video runs Electric Funeral during the credits so only Planet Caravan doesn't make an appearance.
The Angelic Sessions: recorded a few days after their final performance: Just four songs: Tomorrow's Dream, Wicked World, Changes, The Wizard. The version of Changes alone is worth finding this recording! The sound mix is not nearly as crisp as "The End" but it is wonderful nevertheless. Check out the video for Changes first. Geezer and Tony's interplay is spectacular and creates a fitting coda to "The End" video and audio collection. Well done!
Live Album Comparisons
Live At Last: Ozzy era show prior to the release of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. My favorite Ozzy era live release prior to The End. "Killing Yourself To Live" with alternate lyrics, opens with an incredible "Tomorrow's Dream", extended Wicked World jam includes Supernaut, Into the Void riff, and a funky Changes (Sometimes I'm happy). I love the version of Sweet Leaf: plodding main riff and a sped up instrumental bit which shows off the virtuosity of the team. It could have used a bit of editing (intro to War Pigs) and is missing Iron Man but I played the vinyl version for years. This show was later re-released as part of Past Lives but the (few) warts remained and they changed the ordering of "Children of the Grave" and "Paranoid". I still don't get that!
Reunion: After the band reformed for one final show. Thankfully, this turned into 20 more years of touring off and on! A better cross section of songs (perhaps) than "The End" but Ozzy's endless cursing became grating after a while. The performances were good and live versions of Spiral Architect and Lord of This World are highlights but it does not have the comfort and finesse of The End. The two studio tracks are nothing special. If this had been the final document for the band, it would have been disappointing.
Past Lives: Ozzy era shows including the aforementioned Live At Last; plus pieces from a King Biscuit show plus an earlier show. I already owned most of this set but it was good to hear a cleaner version of Megalomania. This set was released in 2002 but I never really cared for it. It felt like a money grab (fine) but the release of 25 year old product elicited a yawn from me.
Live Evil: Good RJD show from the Mob Rules tour. I saw Sabbath for the first time performing this show but Ronnie's oversinging ruins a wonderful memory. I have a bootleg performance from the Meadowlands show that I saw and, in spite of its vastly inferior sound, i prefer it to this release.
Live At Hammersmith: Great RJD show from the first half of the Mob Rules tour. Wow! When this was released by Rhino Records I listened with a dropped jaw! WOW! If you're looking for a good Dio era live Sabbath album, this is it! Country Girl, Falling Off the Edge of the World, Neon Knights. Great stuff!
Cross Purposes Live: Tony Martin era show from the Hammersmith. Sadly, recorded when Tony had a cold and his vocal dynamics aren't all there. Good version of Symptom of the Universe -- complete with final verse over the acoustic! The Wizard and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath are nice inclusions to the set list.
So, if you made it this far into this novella, you must love the album as much as I do! Let me add a final chuckle for you. I'm posting this under my wife's name! haha, she has no idea! Enjoy the music that this tremendous band has given to us over the years! Thank you Ozzy, Tony, Geezer, Bill and many others. God bless you all!
-Setlist is AMAZING. Possibly the best setlist of any tour ever that I can think of.
-Sound mix and recording sounds really crisp and clear.
-The instrumental medley is so cool. I could listen to Tony hammering out killer riffs all day!!
- The band member intros are short, but Ozzy really drags it out by mentioning each member twice and scolding the crowd for not being loud enough.
-The drum solo is like over 8 minutes long. Seriously, how many times do you actually want to listen to this?
I realize that fans might be upset if these bits were omitted, because it's a historical document of the final show. However, I would recommend putting the CD on your iPod or iTunes and skip the drums and intros.
-The parental advisory sticker is permanently featured on the album cover and detracts from the artwork. I admit I am not crazy about the cover art, but the PA is particularly ugly. Does this album even deserve a PA because Ozzy says the f-word a few times inbetween songs?
-Ozzy nearly lost his voice during Hand of Doom. Thankfully after his break he finished strong for the rest of the set. I'm actually kind of impressed they didn't overdub it or use a recording from the previous night's show.
-This show was pretty much a carbon copy of the other UK shows on the tour. It would have been nice if there was something special about it other than simply being the last one. Maybe an extra song or an appearance by Bill Ward or something .
-I bought the DVD thinking that it included this CD, but be aware that it does not. You have to buy them separately. If you can only afford one, I would recommend the CD because the rapid editing on the DVD gave me a headache.
The mixing on the CD is great too.Geezer is Full of bass.Easy to hear and it's the perfect mix of sludge clear,Tony guitar is clear tone, and sounds just amazing in the mix. Ozzy isn't overpowering with his voice, and it sounds very real. Not like someone touched it up here or there. It sounds very genuine. and Tommy and Adam are also given their highlights as well. They've put a lot of time and effort into the CD. Great care.
The album itself is a jewel case, with a booklet with some interview like things, amazing pictures and a lot of pages. It's not a typical one or two page thing. It's an actual liner note booklet. It's great to see it. It really is.
Overall, I highly recommend this to any heavy metal fan, not just sabbath fan. It's an amazing CD. the product is high quality from the packaging and design to the product itself. Everyone should own this. Since This is the god fathers of our genre taking their final bow. It's just amazing.

End of the line for possibly the last reunion. Good selection of early songs not just the obvious ones. The band Al play well, Ozzy does a good job. I was there the night before, great to see them one last time.
