Pros: This is a killer no-nonsense controller for enhanced music productivity. All advertised items work exactly as listed. 100mm fader is silky smooth (I don't need the motorized function but as tested, it works great) . Backlit buttons are a really nice touch for dimly lit studios. Record arming, play, mute, etc all light up when engaged. Channel status Indicator lights change with each channel change. Super great buy for a small footprint recording controller. You can get a lot more done beyond your current mouse driven functionality with this controller. Much of what is on the controller can be done on the qwerty keyboard however, unless you have remembered the keystrokes or have a DAW template or dedicated qwerty keyboard to control your DAW, the FaderPort will definitely speed things up especially if you have the controller sitting near or atop your MIDI controller keyboard. Tracking vocals/live audio and MIDI tracks with this controller is a joy.
Cons: Transport and function buttons don't have the typical console button feel i.e. Yamaha AW4416 or some older Tascam products. Buttons hard click like a very heavy mouse button. These I suppose are taste gripes versus actual functionality cons.
However, being an older unit, presonus has not prioritized keeping up with the times. Whenever a new update comes out to Logic, the fader port needs to be reinstalled as a controller. Honestly, this is a pain and my biggest gripe with the unit. It has kept me from updating several times.
But when you get it up and running it works very well. Nothing beats a physical fader, and its compact design allows it to easily intergrate in to your setup. Also, be aware that to get the automated fader to work you need to have the unit plugged into its dedicated power supply.
I'm using Cuebase 7.5 with a Windows 7 64 bit computer. I was having some trouble with fine adjustments in automation. I was hoping this control would help me with that, as per the product description.
Amazon sent it right out. I ordered it Friday night and it was in my hands by early Sunday afternoon with Amazon Prime free shipping. I LOVE AMAZON!
Now back to the item itself.
The big slider pot is nice, one fader doesn't give you much though, and that's not why I purchased it.
The transport buttons seem to work ok, FF, REW, PLAY and REC.
I was able to Change the Mix View to the Project View. It seems to be one click of the Mix Button to bring up the Mix Console and a double click to bring up the Project Window. One click would be better but you could get accustom to it and it could be useful.
There are left right arrow keys which will scroll through the channels and menus. It just seems easier for me to use a mouse for that.
I was not able to drop any markers on the time line with the marker button.?
I plugged in the power supply (included) which is supposed to power the fader. I never saw it move. Granted I don't know when or why it's supposed to move. ?
The Read Write Buttons for automation work but as far as I can see you can't write any automation with the fader, there is no joystick or up down buttons so no point wasting my time on it.
I might have wanted to keep this unit and spend some time with it, but what ended it for me was the PAN knob. It works, but not well. It's jump-pie. Say you turn it to the left L1 L2 L3 L4 then it skips L5 L6 L7 and goes right to L16 or R16 whatever no rhyme or reason.
This is not a precision control and that's the bottom line for me.
In Presonics' defense this is not a pricey unit. It sells for about 130.00 US Dollars.
It's seems solidly built but if you're looking a precision control look elsewhere. And quite probably dig deeper into your pockets.
