Jala and the Wolves Paperback – February 13, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
When a mirror appears in Jala's room and transports her to the world of wolves -- the fact that she's become a wolf herself is only the beginning! Readers of classic fantasy like The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Alice in Wonderland will adore this chapter book for young readers. Set during American Thanksgiving, the main character must use the gifts and advantages she has from living in a world of plenty to help others who are not as fortunate. The less fortunate creatures are wolves, but the lesson translates well, particularly wrapped in such a delightful little adventure. Buy a copy to share with the young people in your life.
What Readers Are Saying:
"A lovely and whimsical read for any little girl or grown woman like myself."
"Dumas taps into a fantasy that I believe many children probably have (sometimes pretending that they're an animal, or in Jala's case, becoming that animal) and what they can learn from that fantasy. Jala learns more about herself, her family, and her world through her adventure as a wolf and that translates to an added layer of discussion that you could have with your child while reading this book. This would make a lovely addition to any child's ebook library."
"Jala and the Wolves...reads like a Hindu fairytale with its quaint nature-filled charm and elegant magic. It reminds me of the books I read as a child - The Secret Garden and the like - and that makes it something I want to share with my daughter."

About the Author
Sometimes she writes, but only very occasionally and in theearly morning. And, yes. She really does really, really like fantasy books. A lot.

About the author
Marti Dumas is a mom, teacher, and writer from New Orleans. She knows, not thinks, that all kids are smart and does her best to show it in the stories she writes. So far she has written 9 books for children including the Jaden Toussaint, the Greatest series, the Seeds of Magic series, and The Little Human, but her goal is to write 49 or 50. (She can't decide which. 50 is such a nice, round number, but 49 is a perfect square...) And, not that you asked, but she also makes a killer bean pie and shares the recipe freely.

I was very pleased with author Marti Dumas’ ability to keep me deeply involved with the storyline even though it was crafted with children in mind. If you are looking for the perfect book to keep your child hooked during story-time or are looking for an easy-to-read yet surprisingly well written story about the power of the imagination, then I would definitely recommend this book.
As a librarian and homeschooling mother of two, I am always on the lookout for a great read-aloud story for both my patrons and my own children. Kids will certainly relate to Jala and will love her journey as she transforms into a wolf.
The book is perfect for a book group setting and offers many, many routes of conversation to help kids read what is beyond the page and dive deeper into reading a book for it's literary values.
Five stars!
From there the adventure includes Jala helping a pack of wolves learn how to survive again. It’s funny that at the beginning Jala can never seem to eat enough, and is indeed somewhat glutonous, but has to teach the wolves how to find food, and even eat stuff they would never otherwise have considered. It’s a great lesson for Thanksgiving, remembering that not everyone has unlimited supplies of food, and especially not of every food they want when they want it (as she feels about bean pie at the beginning). On that note, it is a bit of a Thanksgiving story, and indeed Thanksgiving soon follows Jala’s adventures – we are left knowing she will have a different view on this holiday and indeed, life.
This is just one of many lessons in Jala and the Wolves. It is a story many will enjoy, for all age groups. I believe the target age groups would be ages 6-12 (somewhere in there), but like any good story, it works for all age groups.
And on top of all that, the voice of the narrator is pleasant to listen to, giving us listeners the feeling of lying in bed as a child as our mothers read us our bedtime stories.
A wonderful story for children of all ages, with a plot that will keep adults and children alike enthralled through story time.
4.5/5
Marti Dumas is a great author, and I loved her style. The way she put the scenes together and organized them, I loved it. The character development was excellent. I can't recommend enough to read this mysterious book.
We read a ton of books to our kids. We are trying to expand the library for our five year old to more "big kid" books. She is a bit below the recommended age range for this book, but that has never stopped us before. I came across this on Amazon and bought it on impulse based on all of the great reviews.
Our daughter was excited when we told her the book was about a girl turning into a wolf. However, she quickly lost interest when we were three or four chapters into this very short book before any wolf ever entered the story. We ended up not not even finishing the book with our daughter (although my wife read the rest herself and wasn't very excited about it either).
We found it very boring and certain parts were a bit too mature, even for the recommended age range.
Just not for us I guess. Your mileage may vary.
