Product Description
Home energy meter is an energy meter for the entire home. It can wirelessly report immediate wattage and kWh usage to central Z-Wave control point gateways and can be easily and safely installed by licensed professionals. Current transformer clamps affix around the AC mains to detect energy usage for the entire house. The home energy meter is powered via AC power. Electrical readings can be taken up to every second. The main body is international protection code rated IP43 to be weatherized for outdoor conditions; it can operate in most weather conditions. This provides for better radio range by bringing the antenna outside of most metallic current breaker boxes.

Once connected to the power lines you will need a nearby outlet to provide power to the meter and follow directions to connect it to your Z-Wave hub (which is required for operation).
With the Samsung SmartThings Hub, 2nd Generation I was able to find a custom app via the community start real time monitoring. I was then able to configure it with PlotWatt free service to trend my usage.
This was a great add-on to my system and gives me an excuse to convince my wife that my home automation addiction is actually saving money.
Contacted Aeotec, they told me I had to go through Vir Ventures for a warranty return. Contacted Vir Ventures, who never responded, so I called them a week later, and they said they'd get back to me. Contacted me a day later saying it was out of warranty.
Well, it is out of warranty, I completely agree. However, I certainly cannot recommend a device that fails in a year and three months, and the manufacturer and distributor have nothing to suggest other than pitch it in the garbage.
- Easy installation, can be done without electrician if you take reasonable care
- plugs into an outlet for power
- reports continously your electric usage
Cons:
- accuracy isn't that great compared to what my electric company meter reports
I bought this device to get a better insight into my energy usage. Now I know: the electric cook top and electric hot water heater are major contributors to my energy bill.
Overall, it took me about 10 minutes to hook up. It clamps around the wires that go from the electric meter to your circuit breaker box. I connected it without any problems to my Samsung SmartThings hub. I then hooked up my SmartThings to PlotWatt in order to get a continuous read of my power consumption. After a month, the total energy reported to PlotWatt is about 70% of what the electric company told me I used. That's a significant gap!
In conclusion - if you want to understand what the peaks and valleys in electric use are, and want to correlate this to specific appliances, this is a great device. If you want to use it for precision / real, quantative measurements of electricity usage, it's just not accurate enough.
Update after connecting to my system found other useful features :
It uses your zip code and calculated your electricity costs by using geographical averages according to your region. Works with Iris however IVEE Voice Assist does not seem to see it on the system. On IVEEEs website it says Energy Monitor coming soon I took that to be the device is coming soon what they mean is the ability to control it is coming soon. Works 1000% with Iris though IMPRESSIVE
Really like the graphs it creates on the Iris page too...
