A Muddled War (Tales of an Inconvenient War Book 3) Kindle Edition

3.9 3.9 out of 5 stars 14 ratings

Everett Klehn, Simone Smithson and Amos Caldwell find themselves in new circumstances as the great breakout from the Pusan Perimeter occurs and the North Korean advance is rolled back in September 1950. An enemy counterattack leaves the war in virtual stalemate.

Everett believes he is leaving the war behind when he is transferred to Supreme Allied Headquarters in Tokyo, only to find himself more involved in the war than ever.

Simone Smithson goes back to the United States and, to her frustration, tells her stories of war to an indifferent American public.

Amos Caldwell, a black American, has to confront innate racial bias, but overcomes his own sense of injustice by leading his African-American troops through very difficult fighting along the 38th Parallel. Each triumphs in his/her own particular way.

Emery Buxton draws on his own travels and study of Asia to give background and insight into the nature of the Korean War. His characters are ordinary Americans who perform extraordinarily when confronted with the dangers and brutality of a war that becomes increasingly confused, with no end in sight.

Good, but not great. Enjoyed it.

Emery Buxton continues in his story of the Korean war. It is truely amazing how America was so ill prepared for war so few years after WWII. It seems both enlisted men and the officer cadre was ill trained and unprepared. Exposing the already disarray when politics wants to run a war instead of generals and generals live the life of comfort in the rear of the battle.
Integration of blacks troops was and is a continual problem thru the Vietnam war. Black Officers, often like Amos Caldwell experiencing the hardest lot. Major Kelhn seems to almost take a backseat in this edition as Simone Smithson provides humor, and a provocative coming of age in this edition. She surely could become another full book as she continues her military career after completion of her OCS. I was given a advance copy of this book for a review, and enjoyed it immensely.

A definition of muddled is "things badly organized or confusing" and it sums up this book. Very little narrative of actual combat or the larger war, just a jumble of interpersonal situations and racial commentary.

The hero, Everett Klehn, goes through some further adventures, this time usually away from the war zone itself, yet still involved with the conduct of the war. The reader is introduced to the headquarter’s view of the war. But the fighting on the various fronts is covered by characters new to the series and a Black captain from Mississippi is given a leading role as he fights against the North Koreans and Chinese on the battlefield and with cultural intolerance of Blacks in the American army itself. The author is keenly sensitive to both arenas and shows how the American army had great problems to master in both and did not always do its job all the time. This is a good follow-on to the first book.

I received a copy of Muddled War to review. I have never read a lots about the Korean War and was glad to get some information about the struggles of the enlisted men and as well as some of the officers. The book was well written, informative but was hard for me to really get into reading it. That is why I gave it only 4 stars.

This book was free for an honest review. Again the novel had good character use age and read fluidly. It was interesting and did a good job of detail info on the war. Good read

I was furnished this book free in return for a honest review. I enjoyed reading this book and can give it a favorable review with all honesty. Emery Buxton writes à very readable story while teaching the history of this war. The story is fiction but the war was real and Buxton very cleverly weaves the true facts into his factual story. I enjoyed reading this book and believe you will also.

Buxton does a wonderful job of keeping reader's entertained as his real-life characters journeyy through their various assignments, often surprising themselves at their own mental strength and stamina. Cleverly woven into the nearly constant action is a close look at how politics and social relations work in both civilian and military situations as intuitively savvy characters succeed. Can't wait for the next in this revealing series!
