Product Description
Product Description
The Ernie Ball vp Jr 250k provides all the same great features as our original volume pedal while reducing your footprint by 22%. The vp 250k Jr is perfectly voiced for passive signals and features a compact, rugged design consisting of aircraft grade aluminum housing that is virtually indestructible. Directly behind the input jack under the footplate is a micro taper switch which provides the user two distinct volume swell rates.
From the Manufacturer
New compact design allows more floor space. The potentiometer has a 250k ohm resistance suitable for the audio path of passive instruments. Behind the jack area under the footplate is a micro taper switch which provides the user two distinct volume swell rates. A tuner output is provided and allows silent tuning when the pedal is in the heel down position.

The design and development of the Ernie Ball pedals has been a team effort of guitar players and craftspersons within our company. Pedal bodies are an aluminum extrusion rather than a casting resulting in greater strength, uniformity, and smoother surfaces. Clear anodized grain finish insures lasting beauty. Overall dimensions: 4" W x 11" L x 2.5" H. The main pivot shaft is of centerless ground 1/2' diameter stainless steel, precision seated though nylon bushings at both ends. The large center shaft diameter, in addition the strength factor, creates a broader stress bearing surface. Our bodies and shafts are designed to give the player an indefinite service life! Deck mat of non-slip material is impervious to oil, alcohol, and most things you might spill on it. Quick disconnect wiring harness allows changing the pot without soldering. Tough long lasting Kevlar cable transmits pedal travel to the controls and is attached by stainless steel springs. This drive design results in smooth and quiet operation qualities lacking in gear driven models. Cycle tests are made on every pedal to insure perfect operation prior to packaging.

I grew up using a Morley Volume pedal back in the '70s when I was learning playing Jeff Beck, Alex Lifeson, Allan Holdsworth and several other volume pedal players. Then, as pedals come and go over a guitarist's lifetime, I had to repurchase my pedals several times. I recently picked up playing Pedal Steel Guitar too and volume pedals are essential.
The Ernie Ball VP JR gets an A+ in my book after over a year later it is still a solid and reliable volume pedal at a reasonable price. I would absolutely purchase again if needed (only offers a 6 month limited warranty). However, the only thing that is likely to malfunction, or wear out, is the sting inside the volume pedal and you can replace that part for a nominal cost and you don't need to be a guitar tech to fix it yourself. There are simple instructions on the web and YouTube that only require a screwdriver and some patience.
A small design flaw, which is a minor critique on my end, is that the position of the taper switch located behind the input jack under the footplate . The micro taper switch gives the guitar or pedal steel player two distinct volume swell rates.
I am happy with the performance, durability and sound of this volume pedal and I am giving it an A+
No battery required.
I owned the Dunlop DVP1 for several months, and while it did an okay job of cutting the volume I simply did not like the feel nor the low volume levels. It felt way too bulky under foot and went from about 0 to about 3 when barely applying volume. This is unacceptable when you're trying to clean up your distortion channel or trying to accomplish a slow volume swell. But as soon as I laid the Ernie Ball down and plugged it in I fell in love. Not only does it feel great under your foot and provide precise control, it has a complete volume sweep. Add in some delay and it will give you an organ-type swell. Absolutely perfect!
I've heard some people complain about the Ernie Ball Jr being a flimsy pedal but I just don't see this. Of course, it's not a tank like the Dunlop or Morley, but it still feels very solid. It's also lighter than the others mentioned, which is a plus for traveling musicians.
I would HIGHLY recommend this pedal. It is one of my favorites on my board and I couldn't imagine playing without it!
Side note, it is the "jr," but a friend recently got the Anniversary Edition (which is full-sized), and the jr not appreciably smaller. Only slightly so. If you think this might be too small, I wouldn't let that keep you from giving this a try
And, in use, it goes from full volume to absolute quite smoothly with no noise and no tone suck on my jazz bass in passive mode (and I'm a tone snob).
However, I did end up returning this pedal because the taper was no suitable for my purposes. All the meaningful volume change happens within a very small arc near the wide open end of the pedal, so I found it very difficult to use it for fine tuning volume, which was my primary purpose, and yes, I did try both positions of the switch that supposedly changes the taper, but didn't notice much difference.
This pedal would be perfect if you're wanting to go smoothly from full off to full open, say for swells, etc, but I didn't find it suitable for fine tuning volume.
Comparing it to a plastic guide connected to a pot doesn't even come close to this cable smoothness.
