Boosts raise the amount gain in your signal, so the assumption by many is that this makes the audio "louder". While this can be true, particularly if the boost is used later in the signal chain, boosts can just as much increase the saturation of the input signal, and hitting the preamp of a tube amp (or perhaps some modeling amps) may also cause it to overdrive. The EHX LPB-1 has a single knob for adjusting the amount of added gain - there are no tone controls or additional parameters. But, used with other pedals (and the settings on your amp), tone control in a booster is more of a luxury than a necessity.
Choosing between boosters can be difficult because you really won't know how they function until you use them with your own rig. I opted for the LPB-1 instead of the MXR Micro Amp (itself a single-knob industry standard) because the LPB-1 tends to be warmer and fuller sounding. On a large, bassy amplifier, this may not be desirable. But on a 10" bright combo amp, such as my Fender Super Champ X2, this is a desirable quality.
Some critics of the LPB-1 have noted that the LPB-1 will get "dirtier" more easily than other boost pedals. Some have even noticed that there is a mid boost with overdrive, almost like a Tubescreamer. However, this was a sound I actually wanted, and if you have a amp that can stay clean at high enough volumes, the LPB-1 should add additional saturation and "fullness" to that tone, without making it sound like an overdrive pedal.
I think the LPB-1 may make sense for a lot of players who use smaller, brighter amps since it is affordable and pairs well with that type of sound. If your are looking for a boost to stack in front of other overdrive pedals to emphasize for lead work, you could consider the Micro Amp, or something with tone controls like the Micro Amp+ or Blackstar LT Boost. In my case, I have the Soul Food (also made by EHX), which offers a lot of clean boost at low overdrive settings, but is considerably brighter than this LPB-1. Between the two, I should have most of my needs covered. The LPB-1 is a tested and proven classic and a great value for a blues/crunch sound, or to emphasize other pedals by giving them "just a little more".
I tried this pedal both in front of the amp and in the FX loop. Either way it colors your tone. In front of my amp, i fond it had a mild OD effect - never truly clean, always with some slight breakup at least, and adding some low end. Not really my cup of tea
Now, in the effects loop, this peal shines for me. First off, works great to turn your clean channel into a vintage SRV edge of breakup type tone - guess it overdrives the power tubes - either way, i'm now using it for "Little Wing" in our set on my B52 AT100, which could'nt touch SRV tones previously - it does with this, sounds killer.
The bonus is using as a lead boost. As i said this is NOT a transparent boost at all. It fattens up leads like crazy. Seems to have a huge lower mid hump that really makes leads sound beefy as hell. Love it!!
For $40, this is one of those pedals that has multiple uses and is great to have around. If you are looking for a totally transparent and clean boost, this might not be what you are looking for.
I bought this pedal cause I only have a Morley Tremonti Wah with built in boost. The boost only comes on when the wah is activated, and it seriously put 'ca hones' in my amp. I got tired of having to rock the wah for an hour or two when I practice two to three times a week.
I don't normally buy new music equipment, and I only have 2 pedals, one a Boss MT2 I got 22 years ago(and still works, just don't really use anymore), and my Morley wah. I've had multi effects pedalboards from line 6 and digitech, but you can tell a difference in the presence. this pedal doesn't loose any presence, tone, while giving a nice sizzle. If you have active pickups, use an amp simulator, or any digital processing, this pedal might not work out for you. If you have good passive pickups, good tone path to your amp, this pedal will rock. I haven't even popped my Fender Strat out of the case with Texas Specials. I wanna hear them in my signal chain, but the SG is just really groovy at the moment.
I'm the only guitarist in a funk/alt rock band, so I do a lot of back-and-forth from rhythms and chords to lead work. This little guy is invaluable. I have the boost set around 11 o'clock, and it gives a powerful punch for solos, bringing the notes up above the rest of the band.
It doesn't color my tone at all. I have it set right after my tuner and wah, before my OD/fuzz pedals. Seems like it adds just a touch of gain, which is A-OK with me, since I'm usually using some type of distortion/overdrive. Not sure if it's different at another spot in the pedal chain... I know some people keep it at the very end of the chain, which could be a good option if you need a signal boost (for all you guys who use two dozen pedals).
No "click" when you turn it on... the foot switch is easy, LED light is bright and the boost is powerful. Like I said, I have mine at 11 o'clock... so, there's lots of room to crank it if you really need to get loud.
And for the price, you can't beat it.

I needed a peddle to use a various 'jam' nights where I would generally only have a guitar and zero effects to use (a number of these jam nights are very small and the backline is pretty much just amps) but wanted to have a nice lead sound with some extra punch if needed.
This peddle did the job perfectly. Recently used with a Marshall combo - had the lead channel set to a mild gain sound which sounded when full or rolled off the volume, then had the boost pedal set about '12' to kick in for the lead. Sounded excellent - lovely thick tone and nice extra gain. Later in the evening I pushed to boost pedal to around '2' and it provided a nice rock distortion for certain songs - really worked well.
Clean sound if far more noticeable as you really get the db increase, but for my use with the gain channel it did exactly what I needed.
Great pedal and a bargain at the price.
