From the Manufacturer
Nova System is the complete, floor-based effects solution for the dedicated guitar player who knows quality when he sees it. Its unique inclusion of an all-analog programmable distortion/overdrive section under preset and expression control makes it the perfect choice whether you want to trim down your rack setup, step up from your pedal patchwork or simply just want the ultimate combination of operational simplicity and audio superiority.
Add to this an array of effects taken straight from the king of floor-based processors; G-System and you have top-notch compression, EQ, noise gate, modulation, pitch, delay and reverb right at your feet. All you need is a guitar and an amp and you’re good to go – first class.
Genuine, Analog Drive Circuit
What makes Nova System so remarkably different is the NDT™ - Nova Drive Technology - a unique, new drive and distortion circuit that gets you the best of both worlds: World-class analog distortion and overdrive with digital control. This is the real deal – no modeling. While the NDT™ is 100 percent analog and physically separated from the digital effects, its control potmeters are digital. This way you can tweak, store and recall as many drive settings as you want - you can even hook up an expression pedal and control the amount of distortion in real-time. Its wide gain range covers your every need from light breakup to heavy distortion.
Top-notch Effects
Equipped with TC branded quality effects from delays and reverbs to compressor, EQ and modulation, Nova System is the obvious all-in-one solution for any guitarist who wants setup simplicity without sacrificing tonal fidelity. All neatly programmable and storable in 60 user presets. Its 30 factory presets give you a demonstration of just what this unit provides; great sound quality and an immense versatility of effects combinations – all designed to get you started right out of the box.

And it did not take me long with the Nova System to find something to get comfortable with. It helped that I (sort of) know the other pedals in the Nova range, because they are basically all (Drive, Modulator, Reverb, Delay, plus Pitch Shifter, Compressor & Boost) in there in this Nova System. And they sound so very good, which, beyond all the preset programming stuff, the ease of use (or not) and what-not, which you can read up on in all the other reviews, is ultimately what really counts.
The pedal as such is what Nova pedals are - substantial, solid, and in this case, super-sized, plus an even more enhanced LED light show, if that is what you like. Not having even scratched yet the programming potential, I think that considering the single boutique pedal price you pay, you get a ton of value out of the Nova System.
Pros: nice sounds, sounds are real, reverb, delay, flange, chorus, compressor, and drives are good. Wasn't sure I liked the way the presets were changed but after understanding how they worked, I actually like it now. Drive sounds are very decent, not a huge range of styles like in a modeler, but just a solid warm crunchy OD and distortion.
Cons: Not huge fan of the phaser sounds - I actually had a G-Major a while back and thought the same thing, and this sounds the same as the G-Major to me. It is serviceable but not great. Also, there is a definite issue with the drive bleeding through when the drive is "off". If you have a patch programmed with drive on, and tap the drive off, you can faintly hear the drive still bleeding through the patch. Not the end of the world, but can be enough to mess up the pristine clean sound. So if you program truly clean patches, make sure you completely set the drive gain/levels to zero to eliminate the bleed issue. Not ideal, but can work around.
The Nova Systems compared to a POD 500HD and a Boss GT-100 - no comparison - yes they are different beasts, but I read many reviews of the modelers and many people claim that you can use these modelers with great success in front of an amp. So I tried them side by side with the Nova. I've been playing for over 30 years with all kinds of gear and I am not a tube snob, I truly wish that you could get inspiring real tones from the modelers, but alas, I think you need to go to the multi-thousand dollar units to get close to real tones and feel. The POD was ridiculously digital and compressed sounding - I know that many people can program them to sound better and the presets are supposedly no good yada yada, but come on, I had an older POD XT Live and it sounded way better in front of an amp with the presets (with the proper adjustments to remove cab sims, etc.) than this newer version. Boss GT-100 was a little better with my amp, but again, didn't sound real. Yes, I did turn off the cab simulations and I've owned these before so know how to program the tones, but it still just didn't sound good. I am not willing to accept the argument that you "have to really deep edit these modelers" to make them work with an amp. Why? Why should they be so hard to get to work with an amp? Amps have been around forever so why aren't these things compatible? The truth in my opinion is that is because the low end modelers (if you consider $500 low end) don't sound that good unless they are designed from the ground up to work with an amp, and these clearly are designed as modelers for PA systems. The modelers are fun and they can record well if you take some time, but they are not a substitute for a decent pedal board and amp. Are they fun and decent sounding for recording or maybe into a PA they are fine. But I keep getting reeled back in by the marketing hype for the modelers, own them for a few days, and then send them back every time.
So for me the all in one modeler just wasn't cutting it with an amp and the Nova sounds superior in every way, a little more basic, but just much higher quality, usable tones. So if you are looking for something that is good sounding, relatively easy to program, and good compromise between a bunch of pedals vs. a modeler, there really isn't much else out there that does what the Nova system does in my opinion.
