I feel like I discovered fire for the first time.....
After seeing Bill Frisell play in Harlem last month, I went up to him and asked him what that big green box he was using for looping was. A normally shy man, he grew visibly excited as he told me all about his Line 6 Delay Modeler. So, I bought one for myself (Merry Christmas to me) and it's just fantastic. Listen to my video and remember that I literally just pulled it out of it's box. It's so cool. I feel like I'm learning a whole new instrument. So far, It's been all about the looper and the backwards/halfspeed functions. I'm not as interested in the multitude of echo/delay options but maybe will over time. My one citicism of it is actually one of it's strengths: you can't erase a sour loop once you've started looping. You have to start all over again. When I asked Frisell about this he laughed and said, "yeah, you have to be on your toes". I soon found out that my "mistakes" were actually really kind of cool when I heard them played back. Had I had erasing capability, I would've gotten rid of them. Maybe that's why this legend of Jazz guitar continues to use this 20 year old pedal instead of the newer versions. In Jazz it's all about the mistakes! Oh, and it sounds really analog. Buy it. I got mine about $100 cheaper from a well known auction site ;) Brand new too.

It's definitely a great delay pedal. Has lots of delay modes and it's very easy to configure. Has 3 banks to store your favourites delays, and the taptempo button is very good when you're playing with a band. Worth the Money. The only negative point is that it comes only with batteries, not with an electric power supply. So, if you don't want to spend lots of money with batteries, you will have to buy the line 6 power supply too.

So this pedal has maintained such a high price by virtue of having been played by many of the prolific guitarists of the 90's.

By now it's actually a vintage pedal, and a very good one aside from some durability issues. But to be frank, there are many more modern options that will give you a lot of the same functionality you will find here with improvements.

The looper is limited compared to dedicated loop pedals, and the programmable boards with built in wah/expression pedals are in this price range.

All that being said, I love this pedal. It's endless hours of the kind of playing that sparks new ideas, and has really transformed my own playing.

Every guitarist should have a DL4. Theres a reason this pedal is so legendary. Countless bands’ tone revolves around it. You can sculpt every parameter of how you want the delay to sound. If you don’t run a digital processor then this is the best option for delay FX.

Don't waste your money on a digital pedal. I spent $250 on this thing and one day it just died, and getting it fixed is expensive, and not every tech can do it. I can't believe a flaw this bad could be allowed to exist in a product so expensive.

I really love this thing. I bought a Boss loop pedal a while back and thought that thing was cool. Saw Reggie Watts using the same pedal at a show I caught in Atlanta and that guy definitely uses it to the extreme. Check out his videos if you want a demo. The looping system is very intuitive and the effects are great. All around one of the best musical investments I've made.

I bought this pedal for primarily looping purposes and have only brushed on it's capabilities with delay so I will just go over the loop.

The loop is amazingly simple to use and can record over and over again by simply pressing a button. It only took 15 minutes to understand exactly what each button did and how to use it, which is a lot less time than it usually takes to get used to new equipment. This pedal is awesome and worth every penny even a lot of great artists like Andrew Bird and Reggie Watts use this same pedal.

Barely scratching the surface so far of what this thing can do, but even after using for just a few hours I am amazed by all the different ways you play with delays and echos. My old Boss digital delay died recently so I decided to upgrade to the DL4. Although it's about twice the price as the latest Boss delay pedal, this is like have 15 delay pedals in one! The possibilities are endless, and record/loop/playback feature is icing on the cake. If you need a delay and are willing to pony up the cash, this is the unit to get! Check out youtube for lots of tricks and tips, reviews, etc, for a taste of what the DL4 can do.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pedal, but weird power requirements
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 9, 2019
You've got to love the DL4. So versatile and simple to use. Lots of settings and adjustment beyond the average delay pedal. It's digital not analogue so obviously you need to accept the processing that brings, but it's no bit-crunched failure like some budget pedals are. These days it's a bit old but when it came out it was top of its game and fine for my needs. Some of the more obscure settings like reverse are a nice bonus. True stereo panning is also a plus. The ability to store multiple settings and instantly jump between them via the footswitches is the most useful part and helps in a gig when the lights suck. No fiddling with a small stompbox pedal in the dark required here!

Three downsides though:
1) size - it's not the smallest. 2-3 boss pedals worth.
2) weird power supply. this is tip positive (not negative like most pedals) and needs a high current feed too. My psu has a special branch just for line 6 pedals so I'm ok, but don't assume you will get away with daisy-chaining this as bad things will happen. You can run it off C-cell batteries if required, but that's a lot of weight and you'd want to be confident they will last long enough to not run out during a gig.
3) the footswitches are a weird kind. They are well known for failing with age/use. Lots of internet pages devoted to the issues and need to get them swapped out eventually. Just something to bare in mind. Mine is fine so far however.
