Few people have ever left their mark on one character quite the way Walter Simonson has. His work on the Mighty Thor swept the Norse God of Thunder to heights never before seen and rarely achieved in his wake. Spanning epic tales of heroism and treachery, love and war, Simonson's work is often considered the definitive Thor. From the majesty and mystery of fabled Asgard to the gritty streets of New York City, Thor was never the same. That is the mark of a true visionary. This first volume begins the collection of Simonson's epic run.

I've never been an action comic book guy. As a kid I loved my uncle's old Peanuts books, and owned many collections of The Far Side, Doonesbury, Calvin and Hobbes, and that's about it.

Enter my 5 year old son. He played Lego Marvel at his uncle's house, and liked it so much (I did too) that I bought it for our PlayStation. Sadly, my poor little guy can't handle the disappointment when he has to stop playing, so we just can't let him play much. I'm talking full on addict, and I get it, I spent plenty of video game time as a kid, and any time a GTA game came out in my 20s I'd hole up in a room for as long as it took to win it.

So I have a game we both like, but I can't be the awful dad that lets his 5 year old kid be a video game addict, so I figured that he might like to actually read about his favorite characters, and the one that stood out most in the game for him was Thor. I did a little research and came across this collection, and I'm very glad I did.

Simonson's work is just flat out good illustration and writing. The art is rough and alive, the characters are rarely one dimensional, the good guys are good, and the bad guys are REALLY bad. I didn't go into this book thinking i would like a character as much as Beta Ray Bill (despite the silly name), and loathing one as much as Loki (who only makes a couple appearances... But is a world class pri&$).

I love the Norse mythology tie in, the sprinkles of wit and humor, the hot comic babes, honestly, as with any truly good writing, the plot is almost irrelevant (listen to the Marc Maron podcast with Ethan Hawke for an interesting discussion of the unimportance of plot in great films, a better interview than I expected). And the plot isn't bad either!

My son just can't get enough of it, he simply won't let me stop reading to him until he's asleep. He asks a lot of questions, it's just too darn cute to hear him ask if Lady Sif is as powerful as Thor and Bill, and the book makes it interesting to answer. I know he can't understand most of the archaic language, and I simplify it slightly, but hey, there are also brilliant pictures to help the kid, and he honestly doesn't ask many questions about the plot- again, it's not as important as the characters and moments themselves.

All I can say is, I get it now. Good comic writing is just good writing. I've already ordered volume two, since I liked volume one so much I read it all the way through myself after the kid fell asleep one night. We just meet Malekith at the end of this volume, and the last panel is not to be missed... these are some bad dudes.

It all begins here! Walt Simonson's run on The Mighty Thor is one of the greatest runs in the book's history. If you're a long time Thor fan or have only come to know Thor through the recent movies, this collection is recommended for you as a lot of the movie comes from things in this run. All 5 volumes are great reads and the new coloring only adds to the beauty of Simonson's art and storytelling. Don't miss it! Highly recommended reading!

Best writer of Thor, that I have seen so far, this is one great TBP and there are many more. They have a single of all Walter Williamson's work, but found it cheaper to buy the volumes in the market place. You save 60% or more over Amazon's price. Excellent action packed, first volume, great start for anyone wanting to know more about the Mighty Thor. Plus by the best writer of Thor. An added, bonus.

I was just eleven years old when this run began but the covers alone compelled me to purchase the individual issues then. Now beyond forty years of age the stories in this volume are still a mark of excellence for this character. In short here's why you should buy it fabulous art superb battles and fresh dialogue even by today's standards this volume does not disappoint it is a must for any serious fan of Thor

Read these comics back in the 80s when they were brand new. Re-reading them here reminds me why Walter Simonson's Thor easily stands beside Frank Miller's Daredevil and John Byrne's Fantastic Four as the BEST Marvel Comics of the 80s!

What I learned from reading this:
1) I strongly prefer the more spaced out, cinematic style of modern comics to this.
2) Within the world of 1980s comics, I strongly prefer gritty noir (such as Miller's Daredevil) to this.

Walt Simonson is a superb draftsman and a lively storyteller. It's no wonder his Thor run has achieved classic status. I'm glad I finally got into this. I'm sure I'll end up buying all 5 volumes of the Simonson trades.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Thor stories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 5, 2020
I used to collect the original Simonson Thor issues way back in 1980’s when he took over as writer/artist.
At the time it was unlike anything I’d seen in Thor comics or perhaps in any comics.
I liked very much Simonson’s kinetic energetic type art.
Thor can be huge challenge for any writer to take on but Simonson does an incredible job, injecting explosive new ideas with story and art, taking Thor to a totally new direction with Simonson’s knowledge in Norse mythology
Amazing thing is it still stands as some of the best Thor stories ever written to this day.
It’s wonderful to have the collected issues in this book

5.0 out of 5 stars This is some of the best Thor material out there

This entire volume series is worth their weight in Gold. This is some of the best Thor material out there, even for folks who maybe didn't ever really jive with the old school comic schtick.

5.0 out of 5 stars Légendaire !
Reviewed in France on September 16, 2013

Great story-telling from an Author who understood Thor's link not only to the Marvel Universe, but also his place in Mythology with nods and winks to the Thor of just not Norse myths but those of Northern Europe as a whole.
