Enter my 5 year old son. He played Lego Marvel at his uncle's house, and liked it so much (I did too) that I bought it for our PlayStation. Sadly, my poor little guy can't handle the disappointment when he has to stop playing, so we just can't let him play much. I'm talking full on addict, and I get it, I spent plenty of video game time as a kid, and any time a GTA game came out in my 20s I'd hole up in a room for as long as it took to win it.
So I have a game we both like, but I can't be the awful dad that lets his 5 year old kid be a video game addict, so I figured that he might like to actually read about his favorite characters, and the one that stood out most in the game for him was Thor. I did a little research and came across this collection, and I'm very glad I did.
Simonson's work is just flat out good illustration and writing. The art is rough and alive, the characters are rarely one dimensional, the good guys are good, and the bad guys are REALLY bad. I didn't go into this book thinking i would like a character as much as Beta Ray Bill (despite the silly name), and loathing one as much as Loki (who only makes a couple appearances... But is a world class pri&$).
I love the Norse mythology tie in, the sprinkles of wit and humor, the hot comic babes, honestly, as with any truly good writing, the plot is almost irrelevant (listen to the Marc Maron podcast with Ethan Hawke for an interesting discussion of the unimportance of plot in great films, a better interview than I expected). And the plot isn't bad either!
My son just can't get enough of it, he simply won't let me stop reading to him until he's asleep. He asks a lot of questions, it's just too darn cute to hear him ask if Lady Sif is as powerful as Thor and Bill, and the book makes it interesting to answer. I know he can't understand most of the archaic language, and I simplify it slightly, but hey, there are also brilliant pictures to help the kid, and he honestly doesn't ask many questions about the plot- again, it's not as important as the characters and moments themselves.
All I can say is, I get it now. Good comic writing is just good writing. I've already ordered volume two, since I liked volume one so much I read it all the way through myself after the kid fell asleep one night. We just meet Malekith at the end of this volume, and the last panel is not to be missed... these are some bad dudes.
1) I strongly prefer the more spaced out, cinematic style of modern comics to this.
2) Within the world of 1980s comics, I strongly prefer gritty noir (such as Miller's Daredevil) to this.

At the time it was unlike anything I’d seen in Thor comics or perhaps in any comics.
I liked very much Simonson’s kinetic energetic type art.
Thor can be huge challenge for any writer to take on but Simonson does an incredible job, injecting explosive new ideas with story and art, taking Thor to a totally new direction with Simonson’s knowledge in Norse mythology
Amazing thing is it still stands as some of the best Thor stories ever written to this day.
It’s wonderful to have the collected issues in this book
