I purchased the collectors edition because I absolutely love this game. I got it in early-mid 2007 and played the snot out of it. The idea of playing as a hero through different mythological times and fighting mythical monsters like Cyclops, giant scarabs, Yeti, and Hades himself (The Immortal Throne expansion) just blew me away. The game play, graphics, replay value, and all the cool features kept it really interesting. I am typically an old school gamer who plays mostly 8 and 16 bit, and old Playstation games daily, so TQ was a step in another direction for me.
However, the original game was riddled with bugs and technical issues, especially with certain graphical problems. This didn't bother me until I got to the end of Immortal Throne, which was a massive let down. However...
...some time after the game was made a "fan patch" was created that corrected pretty much every known bug in the game, and adding that patch REALLY made the game shine. It also added a bunch of "skins" from a "Skins Patch" so your Hero could change outfits that they wear, or don't wear, under their armor. This patch turned a good game with flaws into an EPIC game that was just smooth and fun, and yet still pretty darn hard in places.
Lastly, if you should get this collectors edition, I suggest you look up the fan patch 1.17, as well as a nifty little program called "The TQ Vault" which allows you to store all the items you find and create a massive TQ collection. You can also do some "minor cheats", and complete sets, relics, formulae, etc...using the vault.
As far as the Collectors Edition, I really don't care much for the added bonuses. I have the original TQ + Immortal throne in next to mint condition, so I just got the CE for the fun of it. I didn't even open it out of the package, and the box looks neat on my shelf here.
In conclusion, GET this game, and GET the fan patch.
The controls feel good too. The directional buttons serve as your hot bar, and you can use the back trigger to access more skills.
For those of you that are unfamiliar with the game. It's a straight up Diablo clone. But what makes this game unique is the story and environment. The story was written by Randall Wallace, you might recognize that name as the guy behind Braveheart. The story here is just as good. Without spoiling anything, the game takes place during Ancient Greece/Egypt/China and deals heavily with their religions/mythologies. There is so much lore that is taken directly from their ancient stories. It really is a treat to listen to the NPCs tell their stories. I actually learned quite a bit about Chinese mythology from this game too.
All in all, I love this game and I highly recommend it if you are a fan of the Diablo series and a fan of mythology.
[PS: I will update this review if I ever experience any of those game crashing bugs that previous reviewers from other systems have mentioned, and I will change my score accordingly]
The gameplay is pretty straight forward, easy to understand, basically a replica of Diablo in terms of gameplay. Same view (isometric/top-Down view). The graphics are more alone diablo 2, though personally not a concern. Great story line. But more importantly this damn game is decently lengthy! We have been playing the game 2-4 hours maybe 2-3 times a week, and just now are around 60-70% complete with the game!
The cons for this game. The game can get quite laggy when there are 15+ enemies on the screen, or if you and the co-op player are in different areas of the map. But most of all, the game has hard crashed quite a few times mid-boss battle (ALWAYS BOSS BATTLES).
Would I recommend this game? Yes! Specially to have a non-gamer enjoy a game! My fiancé sometimes is harassing me to play! But, just know you WILL encounter some hard crashes and some not-so-ideal lag when fighting hordes, so much so you are dead before you can heal yourself with a potion!
I really love this game. I bought Titans Quest DVD for PC when it originally came out in 2006, but lost those DVDs to time and circumstance so I bought the Anniversary Edition (included Immortal Throne expansion) on Steam hoping they would have controller support on PC which never came. I kept waiting over two years for controller support on PC but they seem to have left it for only the old-school keyboard and mouse fans on PC.
Needless to say, playing it on the Nintendo Switch is the greatest experience and I won't go back to PC keyboard and mouse now. Sure the targeting isn't 100% accurate, but I would say they're around 90% which is pretty good. I wouldn't let that minor factor prohibit you from experiencing the greatness that lies within this game. Additionally, my girlfriend and I play it for hours on the split screen which is pretty awesome and a big plus too. Being able to take it anywhere on the go just makes it that much more appealing!!! Get the game on the Nintendo Switch and you won't be disappointed!
