Sweet M.2 PCIe drive for the price

Sweet M.2 PCIe drive for the price
I built my new system with one PCIe M.2 drive (512GB) and a 3TB hard drive. That was ok, but I underestimated the size of PC games. I have been using consoles, and had never really thought about the size of games.I started using Steam, Origin, and some other distributors when I ran out of space on my single M.2 drive. The M.2 drive also had Windows and Office on it, and I was putting my system in some risk.I moved my Steam libraries to my hard drive, but I could not stand the speed or noise. I decided it was time to purchase a new M.2 drive.I could have gotten another 512GB drive for less that $70, or a 2TB drive for over $200. But neither of these seemed to suit my needs or my budget. I did look at non-PCI (sata basically) drives, but I saw no reason to purchase drives that were much slower then my current 512GB M.2.I also found a big difference in price between Sabrent (or Silicon Power) and the rest of the companies offering these drives. I have heard the YouTube commercials for the larger manufactures, but I just cannot spend the extra money for no additional value. So, it was between Sabrent and Silicon Power, with Sabrent being a few dollars cheaper. My other M.2 drive is Silicon Power so I would have been happy with another M.2 drive from them. But, their warranty is only 3 years (as far as I could determine), and Sabrent was offering 5 years. So, for less money and better warranty, I went with Sabrent.I am using a Gigabyte Aorus X570 Pro Wifi mobo, which hides the second M.2 under the GPU, just a bit. That could be due to the GPU I am using, and a thinner card may have been easier. But, all in all, it was simple to install. I SUGGEST that you fill out the warranty before you install the M.2 drive. If you do the warranty before the install, you will have easy access to all the information you need. If you wait, it may not be so easy. Be sure to fill out the warranty. You could lose 4 years of warranty (potentially) if you don't.The information was skimpy on how to set up Windows with the new M.2 drive. I did not have an issue, but I could see where others might. When I installed the M.2 drive, my mobo saw the drive right away. But, Windows did not. I had to initialize the file and give it a letter before I could use it. Nothing difficult, but the process could be documented better.Once Windows was happy with the drive, I spent a couple of hours with Steam. I had 500GB of PC games on my hard drive that I needed to send to the new library on the M.2 drive. This process was very manual, and took longer that I had expected. But, now that the setup is done, everything is running fine. To be sure, the clacking the hard drive was making made me a bit unhappy with my new system, but now I am a happy gamer once again.I did see a review on one of the Linus Tech Tip channels, which gave the Sabrent a good rating. I am glad I saw the review. I have seen a number of other reviews for the much more expensive M.2 drives, which made me a bit sad. One of my favorite YouTuber talks about getting "great deals", and then I saw him pushing really expensive M.2 drives that are no better than the Sabrent model. It makes it hard to know when we are listening to a commercial and when we are getting real deal advice. In summery:1. Price - check2. Warranty - check3. Recommendations - checkMy experience with this M.2 drive has been very good. I hope yours will be, too.

This was a very nice bump up from my last nvme drive (MyDigital BPX 240Gb). R/W speeds seem quite respectable for the storage/cost ratio this provides. I discovered my mainboard (Asus Prime B350M-E) does not see this in BIOS mode (ie. Legacy OPRom), but only when booting UEFI mode. I only ran up against that since I'm booting from this drive. I had to make the switch from using ol' GRUB-BIOS to something UEFI aware, I went with systemd-boot.

I built my new system with one PCIe M.2 drive (512GB) and a 3TB hard drive. That was ok, but I underestimated the size of PC games. I have been using consoles, and had never really thought about the size of games.

I started using Steam, Origin, and some other distributors when I ran out of space on my single M.2 drive. The M.2 drive also had Windows and Office on it, and I was putting my system in some risk.

I moved my Steam libraries to my hard drive, but I could not stand the speed or noise. I decided it was time to purchase a new M.2 drive.

I could have gotten another 512GB drive for less that $70, or a 2TB drive for over $200. But neither of these seemed to suit my needs or my budget. I did look at non-PCI (sata basically) drives, but I saw no reason to purchase drives that were much slower then my current 512GB M.2.

I also found a big difference in price between Sabrent (or Silicon Power) and the rest of the companies offering these drives.

So, for less money and better warranty, I went with Sabrent.

I am using a Gigabyte Aorus X570 Pro Wifi mobo, which hides the second M.2 under the GPU, just a bit. You could lose 4 years of warranty (potentially) if you don't.

The information was skimpy on how to set up Windows with the new M.2 drive. I did not have an issue, but I could see where others might. When I installed the M.2 drive, my mobo saw the drive right away. But, Windows did not. I had to initialize the file and give it a letter before I could use it. Nothing difficult, but the process could be documented better.

Once Windows was happy with the drive, I spent a couple of hours with Steam. I had 500GB of PC games on my hard drive that I needed to send to the new library on the M.2 drive. This process was very manual, and took longer that I had expected. But, now that the setup is done, everything is running fine. To be sure, the clacking the hard drive was making made me a bit unhappy with my new system, but now I am a happy gamer once again.

I did see a review on one of the Linus Tech Tip channels, which gave the Sabrent a good rating.

My experience with this M.2 drive has been very good. I hope yours will be, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent price/performance/support ratio

I have a number of Samsung SATA SSDs and they've always been great. Whilst their NVMe offerings have been getting more competitive on price, I'm not certain their price premium is warranted when it comes to the Ben 3 drives. Sabrent drives have been getting excellent reviews for their performance and that is only enhanced by the competitive prices, backed up by a 5 year warranty, so I was more than happy to make them my first foray into NVMe drives.

First up, according to respected reviewers, if you're going to for Gen 4 units then the Samsung 980 Pro is the mack daddy nuts. However it is priced accordingly. Sabrent are reckoned to be almost as good but significantly cheaper, and the same applies here. The drive itself, like all NVMe units, it tiny when you're used to 2.5" form factors and came in a really slinky little metal case which means it was well protected in transit. It was easy to install on my motherboard (Asus Z170 Pro Gaming) and was recognised right away, and the bundled Acronis True Image software was pretty easy to use in order to clone my old boot drive which was running out of space. It's perhaps not quite as good as the Samsung software but easy and quick enough for all but the most demanding users.

Once installed the drive performed pretty much bang on the stated specs in a crystal Disk Mark test and I'm pretty sure boot up time has been reduced a little, although that may be my imagination. Still, it shows that if you have an NVMe slot there is no point buying SATA now, the price has come down enough to get excellent and capacious drives for sensible cash. The 5 year warranty and excellent max TBW endurance means I'm confident this will be a worthwhile purchase.

i am very happy with my purchase, ive been using this drive for my OS and gaming, windows boots in seconds with this drive and ive had no stability issues, i'm using this drive on an ASUS prime x570-p motherboard with no heatsink/spreader, haven't seen temps climb too high and haven't had any throttling for what i'm using it for.

read and write speeds are as advertised.

i've only had this drive for a week so i can't speak to its long term stability/durability.

the only negative i can say for this drive is the management software feels a little barebones, it gives you all of the information you'd want on the drive but the software is missing a bit of polish. not really a big negative it does what it needs to.
