This follow up title does a lot of the same before but adds a plethora of new options for creating your levels ... as well level types to create. You should review some of these changes if you are curious in the Nintendo Directs and other demo YouTube videos. There are many.
A big difference is the removal of the 100 Mario Challenge and the addition of the Endless Challenge mode.
Sharing levels is nearly the same. I will try to do a follow up if the Super Mario Bookmark site is the same. Comments have returned... if you wish to have those on your levels.
EDIT: Super Mario Maker Bookmark site will not be made for Maker 2. There are difficulties getting levels played right now. There’s a website in my profile where you can share levels and play other’s levels.
The most exciting is the 4 player online mode. You can connect up online with your friends to play levels. Enter course world and network play... it’s pretty easy and basic... and hours of fun. It’s every bit as fun as the 1st time you played 4 player New Super Mario Bros on the Wii.
For collectors, no manual is included. And the stylus was not included in the North American launch. The original had a nice manual ... it would’ve been nice for the switch version... or a Collectors Edition version with manual and steel book.
If you can, make sure to buy the version with 12 months of Nintendo Online included. At the launch price, it saves you $10 and is a good deal. The 12 months will stack on your current membership.
This game is great and worth the price of admission.
There is so much to offer with this game.
*Story Mode introduces the player to the game mechanics across 5 different "worlds" (SMB, SMB3, SMW, etc...)
*User-created levels range from the very traditional "what you think of when you think of Mario levels", to extremely creative one-screen puzzles, all the way to crazy 20 second kaizo speed-runs. If you can imagine it, the level exists (or will as soon as you make it!). Sure there are some hot garbage levels out there, but that's what the Like/Boo rating system is for.
*Online Multiplayer is new for Mario Maker 2. Compete against internet strangers, or hopefully soon against your own online friend connections
*Couch Co-op is available as well (I have not personally tried this out yet)
This game is fantastic. The spectrum of difficulty literally spans from the easiest level you can possibly think of (an introduction for your young children, perhaps?) all the way up to levels with 0.01% clear-rates that challenge even professional YouTube streamers.
If you own a Switch, you know that once you've played a game for a week or two it starts telling you how many hours you've put into the game. With games like Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey taking players easily into hundreds of hours of playtime, I can't even begin to imagine how many hours of possibilities a game like Mario Maker 2 could provide to someone who is into this type of 2D platforming and level creation. As with the games mentioned above (throw in Mario Kart 8, Smash, etc), I think Mario Maker 2 has added its name to the list of "Must Have" Switch games.
Just one note of caution - if you plan on purchasing this game solely for the online versus or co-op multiplayer, you're gonna want to invest in a wired internet LAN adapter for your Nintendo Switch. Even in the best case scenario, it isn't as smooth as playing locally. The game is P2P based, so it relies on all participating players to have a fast connection. That means if 1 player out of the potential 4 is playing on a slow connection, it will lag the entire play session for everyone until the player with the bad connection leaves or drops out.
-Online multiplayer co-op does not allow you to "like" a course you just played.
-Online multiplayer versus has a voting feature at the end, but it still doesn't count as you liking a course.
Since neither of these options track your likes, you have to go back to your played courses to then like them. This is further compounded by:
-Local multiplayer ("Nearby Play") with a single system is limited to single screen co-op only, and you can only play created or downloaded courses (no way to randomly play posted courses).
-Local multiplayer ("Nearby Play") with a single system is limited to co-op only and not versus.
I have not been able to test if local / Nearby Play is any better with multiple systems. It's disappointing that the multiplayer is so poorly thought out because it is otherwise a great way to play.
