I am an USA Today Best Selling Author of Historical Jewish Fiction mainly set during World War 2. My father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, When I was very young I learned about the Holocaust. I couldn't understand how something like this could happen. So, I began to research and learn more. I met with survivors. I even met with children and grandchildren of SS officers. But I still had no answers. I cannot say that I have all of the answers to all of my questions even now. But what I do know is that soon all of the survivors will be gone. Their message must be remembered, the sacrifices that they made must not be forgotten. And so I humbly and with the utmost humility I try to tell their stories. It is painful, but I must convey the darkness and horror of the time, However, I also want the world to know and celebrate the unsung heroes. Because there were many ordinary people who acted in heroic ways. I realize that writing these books is a great responsibility. I pray every day that I am able to do this correctly. I am trying to reach out and touch many people, not with the message of the horrors but with the promise of hope. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my work. It is an honor that I never take lightly.

I send you many blessings, Roberta

Once again, Roberta Kagan has written an amazing story. It is gripping and one that cannot be put down until the end. Through the tears of a love story during the most horrific time for Jews during Hitler's reign, this novel was riveting . A must read for all!

Overall this book was really good, and pulled at my heartstrings. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to read about WWII and the hardships that the Jews and the Gentiles went through during this time. The love story between Detrick and Leah was so heartfelt, I found myself crying throughout the book. Same goes for the relationship Detrick had with Leah's father, Jacob. I loved the side stories throughout the book - especially Dorothy's and Helga's, which both left me very emotional.

The reasons I gave this book a 4 star and not a 5:
1. The short chapters. I believe the book had a total of 128 chapters, and the book wasn't that long. With all of the chapters each "scene" seemed cut short. But at the same time I understand why Kagan made the chapters short- she had a lot of ground to cover (many years) and tried to keep things somewhat fast paced to keep the reader interested, which I do appreciate, but at the same time it was a little annoying.
2. Grammar. A lot of reviews I read before purchasing this book mentioned that there were a lot of typos. I've read lots of books with "so-claimed" typos and half the time I don't notice them or it's never bad enough to bother me. However, this book has lots of typos and they are pretty bad, and this is coming from someone that is not a grammar police in the least.
3. I felt the ending was abrupt. Throughout reading the book I knew they were building up for the big ending and when it finally happened everything went by so fast, and next thing I know its 20+ years later.

Overall, this was a great read. Kagan is an amazing storyteller- I couldn't put this book down. Buy it. Read it!! :)

Loved the look into so many lives and how they all connected with each others destiny. Love of faith, family, nationalism and self are all highlighted. It helps to somewhat understand people's actions during this horrific period in history. Kagan not only tells a story (several in fact) but teaches us history in a compelling way. I couldn't put it down! Excellent read.

Wanted to like this book as I generally like books about this period in history and concerning World War II in particular. While the book was well written and had good character development I felt like the author wanted to present a history lesson rather than a tell a particular story. Pretty much every event from the Holocaust was presented in some way and I felt as if the author wanted to squeeze everything in she could about events in Nazi Germany rather than just focus on the main characters and tell their story. If you don't know much about the Holocaust and want to learn more in a story-presented fashion then perhaps this book is for you as it doesn't read as a dry history lesson. If you already know much of the events of this period then I think you might be somewhat disappointed.

The author has written a book about the holocaust but not one of horror. Instead this story is one of love. I have read many holocaust related stories and must say this book provided much more of a realistic story of love and wonderment during a time of horror. Thank you Roberta Kagan.

1.0 out of 5 stars Schlecht recherchiert, schlecht geschrieben
Reviewed in Germany on March 2, 2013
