*Update* IT HAS IMPROVED!
Update one year later:Most, if not all of my complaints have been addressed and I use this product daily now for just about anything, I use it in the bedroom for music and information like weather or Alexa handsfree when it's on the base, although I'll be on the phone with it nearby and it'll think I'm saying the wake word sometimes, not a big issue but it's still something to keep in mind. Aside from that I'm very satisfied with it one year out from initial reviewOriginal review "August 2016":My expectations were definitely set a lot higher then what I got from this product. First things first, the app required to set it up is poorly designed. Initially I thought it was because I was running iOS 10 beta and some apps can misbehave with the software. However, after reading some appstore reviews I realized it was also an issue for others who are running more stable version of iOS such as 9. It is slow and buggy and the layout is barely usable. The home screen is filled with these "cards" of all your actions with alexa, and deleting them is a long and tedious process so I simply let them pile up and never touch them. The now playing section is a poorly constructed mini-player that lets you control the tracks (personally, I just open the Spotify app and control it from there, although this is as buggy and lagged as the Amazon app). Now many will say that these issues are because my Internet connection isn't fast enough or I have a bad router but I use a Ubiquiti access point and have 150 Mbps fiber optics Internet so their can't be any issues there. As far as the device itself it's built reasonably sturdy and all of its buttons and ports are firmly set and don't feel flimsy, although that's to be expected from an Amazon product, nothing I own with their name on it feels flimsy or cheap and this is no different. Alexa, granted is a great resource but beyond the videos and demos you see of it, it has not much more to offer. Simple questions you ask her don't work while it seems like a no-brainer for a modern AI, and not being phrase specific causes her to not understand the command. It feels more like a first generation car VC than an Amazon backed cloud service. Music control is horrible, she can't play my songs in Spotify, which means it requires me to open the app every time I turn it on. Therefore, not very useful. Also, when it's on the charging base you can't even say "hey alexa" and many people say that's because it's not a long range microphone like the echo but to me I'm not asking it to hear me from 30 feet away, in many cases I have the device within close proximity (6 or so feet away from me on my entertainment center when I'm in the bed) and would like to have this functionality, ar least while it's on the charging base, I mean the iPhone now has "hey siri" even when not connected to a power source and it hears me just fine several feet away as long as its screen up (because it uses the microphone in earpiece) so I don't know why this can't be included in a device that clearly has a farther range than the tiny one on an iPhone. One feature that seems like a long shot but that I'd like to see is the ability to accept calls over wifi. Now, I know it sounds like a far shot but I think carriers like T-mobile and Verizon that have wifi calling capabilities and iPhone's abilities to send phone calls to other iDevices makes it seem like not that difficult of a task. After all, amazon has a giant cloud service behind this device, I couldn't imagine a service like this being too difficult to implement.Overall, as a wireless speaker this does the job nicely but the cloud functionality seems a bit more like a party trick then a legitimate voice control software system.
