Product Description
Contoured for comfort The Sculpt Comfort Desktop is both comfortable and customizable. The contoured design promotes a natural, relaxed wrist posture, while also putting keys within easy reach. The keyboard also includes cushioned palm rest that helps support and straighten the wrist. However, the palm rest can easily be removed when you're tight on space, or simply want a sleeker, more compact look. Built for productivity Microsoft believes in the constant pursuit of excellence, and is always looking for ways to improve the comfort and productivity of our hardware. The new split spacebar with backspace functionality on the Sculpt Comfort Keyboard is the perfect example. Research shows that 90 percent of people use only their right thumb to hit the space bar, and that the backspace key is one of the most frequently used keys on a keyboard. Knowing this, Microsoft Hardware designers built a larger, split spacebar that includes a backspace bar on the left-hand side. The new design helps improve typing speed and provide improved comfort. Perfect for Windows 8 The Sculpt Comfort Desktop is equipped with hotkeys that give you one-touch access to some of the most commonly used functions in Windows 8, so you can search, share, or access your settings in the blink of an eye.

Software and drivers seem to download and start to install automatically when first plugging in the small USB receiver. The software allows for customization of several keyboard and mouse functions as well as creating and executing custom macros. The thumb button on the mouse is also “swipe” sensitive. By default, swiping up and down the button’s surface flips forward and backwards between web pages, but this is also customizable.
Though the packaging and descriptions imply that it is designed for Windows 8, all features work just fine with Windows 7.
The price for the keyboard /mouse combo was very fair.
While I really do like using this wireless desktop, there are a number of things that I am not pleased with. These are just my opinion, but you may prefer these.
The space bar is split to allow the left side to be the Backspace key. I guess this is to support the “Ergo” design, but I think it is unnecessary. Hitting where the spacebar splits is very distracting while typing.
The special functions of the function keys are enabled via a mode switch that stays in its selected setting. I think this should have been a “per use” button with a function mode lock option.
There is a mini vibrator in the mouse that is briefly activated when using the thumb swipe. While I’m sure it has some purpose, I find it more distracting then useful and I wonder how it affects battery life. I don’t see a way of disabling it.
The top of the mouse has a shiny black finish. While the mouse looks nice, it quickly shows fingerprints and is slippery when pressing the mouse buttons. I actually took the mouse top (removable for battery access) and sanded it with a fine sandpaper to give it a little texture. I don’t recommend doing this though. My mouse went from “pretty” to “pretty ugly”.
No Pause / Break key. While not commonly used these days, I discovered it was not there while needing it to do some command line scripting.
One last note. Using this keyboard causes the installation of Windows 7 to fail on my HP desktop. This does not mean this would happen on all computers and operating systems, but something worth remembering should you also have to rebuild your system with this keyboard.
Despite my issues with it, overall this is one of the better keyboards I have had.
Works beautifully for a couple of months.
Then gets laggy and unresponsive, even after replacing batteries and changing ports with the dongle.
There are no updated drivers for this as this one was created in 2016 and apparently they no longer have updates for it. How very Microsoft of you.
And now for the story:
Letters rubbed of about a month in... and BECAUSE OF THIS, MICROSFOT WILL NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY.
Spent almost TWO HOURS on chat and phone with these f*ckers.
Support determined that it was, indeed, a hardware issue. (OK, sounds good... sooo replace it, right?)
Was then asked to send a photo of the keyboard.
So, I take pic with phone, send it to email, download into desktop so I can upload into support chat, dear god...
Agent take a look at then states, well the key letters have rubbed off.
Yes, I respond, that's another issue. Had it since Sept 23, 2020. Letters came off by November.
THEN, the agent has the freaking audacity to say, "Well, this is a cosmetic issue and it's not covered. It's considered normal wear and tear."
Ummmmm..... I contacted Microsoft because the keys were skipping, the space bar was laggy, and the enter button was sketchy. Wasn't concerned with the key letters rubbing off.
However, the agent stuck to that script for the rest of the session.
Kept saying over and over, it's a cosmetic issue and we don't cover that.
I kept responding with, "But, uuuummmm, that's NOT the issue that I contacted you about!!"
CSR: "But, we don't cover normal wear and tear."
ME: "Yes, but the keys are skipping and the tech agent already confirmed a HARDWARE ISSUE."
CSR: "I'm so sorry but we don't cover normal wear and tear of the keyboard."
ME: "Yes, I got that. HOWEVER, its a hardware issue."
We did this until I got angry and started writing in all caps and started cussing... LOL
And she kept repeating the SAME THING.
So, I finally said, "So, what you're telling me is that even though the keyboard has a confirmed hardware issue, and I've had it less than 6 months, you won't honor the 3 year warranty because the letters on my keys have worn off (which is courtesy of Microsoft's sh*tty silkscreening?)"
"Yes. I'm so sorry" Was the reply.
And... then it dawned on me....
They requested the pic of my keyboard so that they could GET OUT OF HONORING THE WARRANTY BY SAYING THAT IT HAS A COSMETIC ISSUE.
Oh, Microsoft. The amount of bad karma that you are producing is astounding and is going to come back to haunt you in more ways than you could ever imagine.
*I'm looking at you Bill*
LOVE the keyboard, BUT will only last a few months. It's disposable.
So, you know what I did?
Purchased this again last night at Best Buy and got the Best Buy Geeks Squad 2year Accident Replacement warranty. Cut out MS altogether. So when this ones fails, I'll just got get another one.
Yep, lovely disposable keyboard.
Thank for coming to my TedTalk.
