Now, for some reason, the devices do not play well with any other services, IFTTT in specific. (which is the most commonly used “if this than that” control program).
So if you want a big brick plug-in that you need to supply almost constant maintenance to but then not be able to use it any any other capacity, sure they are fine. But there are a lot of other offerings in the smart plug category, and most all of those seem to be playing better in the sandbox with real world needs for such devices.
The Wemo was a complete hassle to connect for the first time, the app didn't "see" the device for a long time after connecting to the Wemo's WiFi, to the point where I thought I had done something wrong. After it connected, it required several updates, each of which would go on for a very long time with no indication that they had finished and no reconnection afterwards. So I'd unplug it, reset the device, wait for the app to see it again, then get a new, different update that would require the process to be repeated again. And again. I have no problem with firmware updates, in fact I appreciate when companies improve their products on a continuous basis, but this was absurd.
After the final update was seemingly post-office mailed to my device, I installed it in the location in which it was going to be used. The area has excellent WiFi coverage, as I have multiple access points spread throughout my home and this was very near one. It wasn't a cold day, so I only had it on for a bit to test the usage of it, and everything seemed fine. After a couple hours, I went back in the app, and it was no longer listed. I don't own any other Wemo products, so the list was just empty. Annoyed, I refreshed the app discovery and it still didn't pop up. I went to the Wemo Insight Switch and noticed that the amber WiFi light was flashing, indicating that it had lost connection. So I pulled it out of the socket and held down the connection button while plugging it in and then kept holding it for a while after it was powered on, as per the instructions and my previous experience after the updates. Then I reconnected to the device's WiFi on my phone, started up the app, and set it up again as a new device. After that, it worked again.
Fast forward a couple days, and it had disappeared from the Wemo app again, amber light flashing. I tried just unplugging it and plugging it back in, but that did nothing. So I reset and re-paired it again. This happened with obnoxious frequency, from every couple hours to every couple days, there was no rhyme or reason to the insanity.
As a user, I cannot stress to you enough to avoid this product. For something so simple, it fails miserably at the very task it is purchased to do. The firmware updates I performed must have been placebo updates, because for something getting so many updates to still be this broken is unfathomable.
I never tried the Amazon Alexa integration, because today was the first day it was cold enough to start to use, and when I tried to add it to my Echo, it wasn't found. Lo and behold, it had disconnected again overnight. This was the final straw.
At first I would assume I received a faulty device, but after reading reviews I think this is just the nature of the device and how it operates. I'm returning it and going to try another brand of similar device, because even though other brands don't have the decently-known Belkin name, they couldn't possibly be more poorly-executed than this Wemo Insight Switch.
I guess one of the differences between this and the older WeMo switch is the power monitoring capability of this model. Very useful to check the power consumption of your devices and see real time status. However, you'll need to calibrate the switch to the power use of the device you're controlling. Originally my LED bulbs did not consume enough power to show as on in the app, which appears to set the threshold at 8W. WeMo makes calibration easy by providing a button in the app that lets the switch detect on and off state power usage and set its own threshold, which for the LEDs turned out to be 2W. I seriously love these things. The only thing that could make them better is to include a dimmer function at some point.
Top reviews from other countries
I would have expected to be able to make an IFTTT based on specific wattage numbers.
Moreover, I tried to use the standby function in IFTTT, and there's only "Enters Standby" there's no way to have an IFTTT for "in standby for x minutes".
Wemo had such a great opportunity to make an amazing IFTTT connected device and shared nearly no information with IFTTT. Swing and a miss.
If you're expecting to use that smart-meter information in IFTTT, move on. This isn't the device for you.
The only issues I have are:
1. Every so often, one of the units will not not it is online and so, must be unplugged and plugged in again. That said, not a significant issue overall.
2. The units cannot be remotely controlled when traversing a wired hub on the same network; what I mean is, both Insight Smart Plugs are connecting either the WiFi signal from AP1; but when I am in another part of the house, using AP2, the signal from the Smart Plugs doesn't appear to traverse the wired hub (though both access points are on the same hub). So, just be aware that you may have similar issues.
But overall, a good product. I do wish though, that Apple's HomeKit was natively supported and didn't require the purchase of the Wemo Bridge to enable the Insight units for HomeKit usage. Other Wemo devices don't need the Bridge. Come on Belkin, fix this.
