Most of my observations are "5-star," and I have a few criticisms which I will also explain.
The look is overall very good with only the front grilles/logo looking a touch "plasticky" by comparison to the rest. Side panels, rear-speaker interface, and overall build quality is excellent.
Input options are excellent. Controls work smoothly and feel nice to operate.
And now to what matters most:
The truly superb aspects of the sound of these speakers are in their cohesive presentation, their musical imaging/soundstage, and the naturalness of the mids and highs. You'll like how singers sound and how things like drum brushes, guitar strings, most melodic instruments, and the "spaciousness" created by good studio recording equipment and processes comes through. This part of the presentation is truly high-end.
The lows and (let's call them) "upper-lows" are very good overall. In terms of balance/crossover/"smoothness with the whole" they're excellent. So, you don't have to worry that these are treble-heavy or unbalanced sounding. They're rich and smooth, and just about anyone will be impressed.
Where I think they're just a touch muddy is in those "upper lows." Additionally, I think the vocal-mids are a TINY bit recessed in their neutral position. This is very nitpicky, but (if you're like me) you were wondering how great these really are. And, they are great! But, there's an area in the spectrum which just sounds the slightest bit dull or cloudy (or some word like that) when compared to the immediacy and ring of the whole picture of sound.
The good news is that these are very slight tendencies, and they can be mitigated. And, yes, there's always a possibility that earlier parts of the chain are responsible. But, I wouldn't bother to offer this critique if I thought my experience was likely to be unique. Remember that D/A conversion and amplification is done onboard with these (a Burr-Brown chip), and I'm going in with ones and zeroes.
So, here's what I did. First, I moved the speaker knobs (Bass & Treble) to the neutral positions. Then, I chose the "monitor" sound option from the remote (to produce the most "flat" response from the speakers, as described in the manual). My sound card offers a graphic-equalizer interface, and (with everything else moved to neutral) I chose a selection of recordings which I was very familiar with (and which I'd heard on other nice systems: a Focal component setup and a Rogue Audio / Vandersteen setup). This included jazz, violin sonatas, and rock (ok...and some Christmas music...sigh). I adjusted the eq a point or two (very very little) to decrease those "upper lows" and increase the upper mids. I adjusted the lowest bass frequencies and treble frequencies upward slightly too (with the overall shape of the eq still looking pretty flat). I kept changing source material until everything generally seemed most natural to my perception of all the instruments & resonance.
Then I tweaked things a tiny bit more with the sound presets and the knobs on the speakers themselves (you'll be glad to know that they're all extremely subtle effects and don't "cheapen" the musicality of these speakers in any way ...In fact, the "feature" of these having sound-presets almost pushed me away from them and to the earlier S1000DB). The presets are essentially on-board eq patterns (four of them), and I ended up liking the "vocal" option most because it pushes those mids forward a tiny bit -and does so sweetly. I turned up the gain on the bass/treble knobs a little to my taste (they're also not dramatic in their effects).
All this is not to say that anyone else should repeat what I did. My aim is to point out that there are lots of ways to adjust these speakers to one's liking (and to one's understandably lofty expectations). After my time experimenting with them, I feel really happy with how they sound, and I can't argue with the great reviews out there.
Also, I would not mean to say that without an equalizer or this nerdy bit of "tweaking" that you're likely to think they're in any way disappointing. I just thought you should have these comments in addition to the others because I like to get a sense of various different reviews before I buy expensive things too! They deserve the praise they get, and I think they're worth the price.
Enjoy!
I connected a chromecast audio via toslink to these speakers, mainly to listen to Spotify. I listened to a broad range of music, from classical to rock and rap to vocal heavy stuff from Adele and Evanescence and everything sounded really good. I was worried that the speakers would sound a bit tinny and not have enough bass, those worries were quickly dismissed. Vocals were clear and powerful. Highs are crystal clear. And there is enough bass for music listening. As long as you don't want to shake the house these pair of speakers will have enough punch to drive pretty much any music you'd throw at it. Bluetooth sounded really good as well for the 30 seconds or so that I listened.
I listen to these about 6 inches below the speakers and about 9 feet away on my bed in my bedroom and they still sound really good for $400. I suspect that the prime listening position is at or slightly above ear level with the tweeters and a foot or 2 back from the front of the speakers.
Originally I had a Sonos One, which is getting returned this week, in hopes that I could have alexa integration with a decent sounding speaker with a small footprint. In the end the mic on the Sonos sucked and quite frankly for $200, it wasn't worth the limited use as just a networked speaker. The combo of these speakers and a chromecast audio destroy the Sonos One. 2 Sonos Ones sell for $400. For about $40 more and a bit more real estate on my dresser these kick the crap out of those just based on audio quality. What these have over the Sonos is the ability to plug in outside sources including bluetooth.
Who should buy these? Anyone who doesn't have space for a full fledged receiver and 2 speakers, but still wants quality audio in a small or medium sized room. These are also great as pc speakers assuming you have enough space on your desk. These are quite hefty, make sure you've got the space before you buy these!
Why wouldn't you buy these? If you have the space for a full fledged avr my guess is you can probably get around the same sound or better with a $150 receiver and a $250 pair of bookshelf speakers. That's just a guess as I have no way to compare that setup vs these speakers. If I were looking for booming sound for movies especially in a large room I'd find something that would allow you to hook up a sub.
Pros:
These sound great.
Form factor - you don't need a stereo receiver to power these up.
These look really nice!
Price.
Cons:
I'd really like a volume level display on the front or at least have the volume knob move to a metered volume level as the remote is pushed.
The remote kind of sucks. I know users complained that the remote of the cheaper models was too small and easy to lose. The remote that comes with these speakers is quite big, but at this price it really would be nice to have backlit buttons and treble and bass level buttons. This is nitpicking as most people will buy these for their pc rigs and will be able to adjust everything on the speaker itself. In my case I really don't use any buttons besides the volume and preset eqs.
No convenient way to add a sub. The ability to connect a sub would be the frosting on the cake and would fill in the gap for those who need that extra punch of bass, especially for movie viewing.
I give these speakers 5 stars because for me given the size and price they exceeded what I expected from two powered bookshelf speakers for under $400. The only thing that Edifier skimped on was the giant cheapie looking remote. I really do love these! I'm thinking about getting a 2nd pair for my office once I figure out how to make room for them.

The R1280Ts were actually the fronts at first, and they sounded amazing, but I've been tempted for a very long time to upgrade to higher-end Edifiers.
I tried the R2000DB, but was disappointed by the super 'boomy' bass which seemed to overpower everything else -- inferior product to my ears.
I ended up getting yet another set of R1280Ts to serve as fronts, sides and rears, finding the sound more pleasing.
Still, I was curious about the S2000pros which seemed to emphasize treble with the novel tweeters. After eyeing them for quite some time and reading every review I could find, I decided to take the leap. So glad I did. Now when I'm watching Netflix I find the voices all have such a richness to them that I never imagined was there. In 'Into the Badlands' even the purring of a motorcycle engine was super impressive. I have the bass set to zero (again, it's an apartment) and it still adds such depth and texture to everything.
Music sounds great, and some parts have seemed to fill up part of the audio 'spectrum' in a way I've never experienced before. It also seems like I have a lot more control over the volume than with the R1280Ts -- like I have to crank the Windows volume many more notches to hear a significant jump in output from the speakers, which allows more fine-tuning. It's actually changing the way I think about volume: With the R1280Ts, if I found part of the sound lacking I'd increase the volume to hear better and unfortunately the other parts of the sound could become a bit overpowering. With the S2000pros, I find everything seems balanced enough that I don't have to compromise when I turn up the volume. It's a strange paradigm shift that's taking some getting used to.
I still think the R1280Ts are fantastic value, but see why the S2000pro is priced ~3.5x higher.
Complaints about the controller are somewhat justified. The edges are SHARP! But it's functional and responsive, and doesn't really bother me enough to warrant more description.
The Bluetooth sound quality is good with my Nexus 6P. It does suffer if there's interference, and my work laptop seems to cause a lot of it -- making the sound break up. Maybe the speakers are telling me music will be a distraction from work? ;) But when the laptop is off I haven't had Bluetooth problems.
Overall I'm really happy with these so far. Will update this if that changes.
The box they arrived in was surprisingly heavy. They were very securely packaged at the factory.
The box contains all you need for the extremely easy setup.
The design is very appealing. They will look great in any setting. The woods adds to the elegance of the overall design.
The sound is superb. Nicely balanced with a broad soundstage. There are bass and treble adjustments on the powered speaker and you can make further equalizer mode adjustments on the remote. The adjustments are subtle, but noticeable. (No simulated surround or such, thankfully. Simply solid stereo.)
The powered speaker is quite hefty. It must be packed with solid circuitry based upon the sound output.
I like the size of the remote. Buttons are responsive and do the job. Nicely spaced for ease of operation.
You couldn’t go wrong buying these speakers in my opinion. The build is of top quality, as is the sound.
Highly recommended.
