Will Not Integrate with Apple HomeKit as Advertised
    1 Star
Will Not Integrate with Apple HomeKit as Advertised
I started my home integration with smart lights and switches. I have a single pole Wemo switch that installed and connected between the Wemo app and HomeKit flawlessly. They included a bar code for you to take a pic of and it did the rest. There was also an 8 digit code in the set up instructions you could use to enter manually also. That one was perfect and I couldn’t be happier. With that I purchased the Wemo Smart Dimmer F7C059 allegedly for Apple HomeKit. Install fine, connect to Wemo app fine, no connection to HomeKit. Read through all the “help” which was no help at all, updated firmware, nope. I can go into the hardware info and see that it says, HomeKit Setup Code NOT AVAILABLE YET.I called Wemo help number and got the ole standard recording all companies are now using “...due to unusually high call volumes there may be longer then normal wait times...”. Yeah, that told me they had one person answering the complaint calls for all the folks like me that can’t connect the devise to their HomeKit. After an hour of being on hold, I hung up. I called back later in the evening and after about 30 minutes on hold someone picked up. Told them the above and she said we can try rebooting the devise and see if that does it but understand this might not work sir. I said ok, its not working now so I have nothing to lose lets do that. We I’m just trying to set expectations sir that it might not work... I said why would you twice tell me that unless you do this 50 times a day with outraged Apple customers that can’t connect and you already know resetting the devise is a waste of time....But your trying to appear like you’re doing something to “help”...Rebooted and of course no joy. Then she said it might take 24-48 hours for the code to download to the devise from the cloud. Ah yes, the “time stall” reply to get me off the phone with her so she can move on to the next caller and repeat the same process with them and get no where....She mentioned this is a known issue for a few days now and they were working on it. A few days? In scouring the internet on trying to fix this “known issue for a few days” there are people complaining of this over a month, 6 months and even a year ago!She mentioned I might have to buy a Wemo bridge to make it work. I’m actually fine with that and if that is what resolves it I will for the 30 bucks, but they should just state that upfront instead of specifically stating no bridge required. They got a long way to go to make this work as flawlessly as their single pole switch does which is a pleasure to use from my Apple Watch. Unfortunately I can’t push the Wemo app to my iWatch which is why I wanted HomeKit...Not nice for them advertise erroneously a product functionality that does not work and they can’t solve but continue to advertise anyway...I have one of their Wemo 3-way switches coming today. I hope that works like the single pole switch and not the dimmer. Good grief! Not nice.Ok, Edited To Add: After contacting their “customer support” for help adding the dimmer switch to the Apple HomeKit as advertised, they couldn’t help me other than to suggest buying the WeMo bridge. So for $30 bucks I did and it just arrived. I installed in within minutes and was able to add my WeMo dimmer switch to the bridge and the bridge to the Apple HomeKit. I don’t care so much as having to spend the extra 30 bucks on the bridge to make this thing work, I’m glad it did work, it just is upsetting to me that they advertise it not to need the bridge and then without it, it won’t work as advertised. That’s just wrong. Just state the dimmer needs the bridge to connect to the Apple HomeKit upfront so customers know what to buy from the start. Or offer it as a package deal. That’s the right way to market your product. At least it does work. Thankfully. So anyone in my situation above, totally frustrated because you can’t connect it to AppleKit, buying the bridge is a viable workaround for the extra 30 bucks. Good luck!

Have had this for a few weeks and it works great. No complaints so far. Two things to keep in mind: 1) you must have a neutral wire and 2) you must have room in the electrical box to stuff this thing in there. The hardware that needs to go into the box is fairly big, even bigger than a normal dimmer switch, but not by much. My existing dimmer switch didn't have labels for the hot and neutral and they were the same color wire. I had to do trial and error to figure it out, but it wasn't bad.

I have this tied into our Echo and it's pretty cool, but I honestly don't do it out of need, more novelty. That has more to do with my home layout, so YMMV. But the main reason I got this and it's killer feature is the easy scheduling from the app. You can set a schedule of when the switch turns on and off. It's great for every day use or for use as a security timer. It's a lot easier to schedule and set than the old school timers my dad used to use. It's also compatible with IFTTT, but I personally don't have a lot of use for this right now. Good to know it's there though.

I prefer this dimmer to the traditional, mechanical ones. It's a nice big button area to turn the lights on and off. The dimmer is harder to use than my old one because it's a capacitive touch slider. You just touch and slide your finger. The old one had a nice big lever for doing that, but it annoyed me because I turn the light on and off much more frequently than adjust the dimmer. I appreciate the bigger on/off switch compared to the bigger slider. It's a good looking design, it's not obnoxiously techy or anything. It just has a subtle led that changes colors to alert you to something. For the most part, I don't notice the light there. I've been thinking of replacing all of my sliders with this more for the really nice appearance than function, but it's hard to justify at this price. Yes, the downside of this is that it is really expensive for a dimmer switch. But I definitely think it's worth it for one of my most used switches in the house. It's debatable how much it's worth it for the less used ones.

Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2018
This dimmer installed without a lot of fuss. One may have trouble with swapping the live input (black) and output (red) wires, as a "normal" dimmer may work fine with either of those switched, as the dimmer just changes pulse width, which would work on either input or output. This is a relatively complex dimmer electrically, so the order matters. The instructions were good as far as troubleshooting; if they are reversed the dimmer just won't work.

    ADDED:
    Also got the 3-way switch:
So, to start, this is one of the more complex installations, with FIVE wires. You do need the neutral wire, usually white, which is often not used on a regular switch. On a recently built home, this will be there, but on an older one it will not.

The wires in your wall may be various colors, in my case 2 black, white, red, green. The switch has white, blue, red, black, and green. So, not a match, but the instructions were very helpful in identifying what was what. It went in easily and worked on the first try.

The Alexa integration was basically automatic after using the Wemo app. I'm pretty happy with it. The 3-way switch seems to have improved readiness versus the dimmer, which sometimes has a "miss" with Alexa, working right afterward.

You do only need 1 switch for a 3-way circuit.

This connected to the app just fine, and you can choose whether you have incandescent, CFL, or LED bulbs, and the dimmer calibrated to my LEDs instantly. There are some limitations on current, so really you're not going to run 10 incandescent lights off this; 1-5 should be OK in just about all cases.

I've also paired it with Alexa and Google Home without issue. It worked just as it should.

One thing to keep in mind is that the dimmer does require a "neutral" wire; this is usually the white one behind your wall (and the black one is the "hot" line). Most light switches do not really need this, as they have the live input, output, and ground (green wire). My old dimmer did not use the neutral, and this line was sort of buried way back in the wall, with no lead. I had to tap into it to make one. Not a big deal really, but something to be aware of. It is noted on the package, so that's fair. It would probably be good to make this more prominent in the listing, though, as installing this dimmer to replace a switch or dimmer with no neutral line starts pushing this into a "medium" difficulty job rather than an "easy" one.

In terms of behavior, it does brighten and dim when you turn these on/off. I'd say it's about 0.25 seconds to turn on full brightness, and 0.5 seconds to go from full brightness to off. I didn't expect this, but it's fine, and is NOT like the first-generation LED bulbs that had a noticeable delay in turning on.

I have been looking for a dimmer wifi light switch for my bedroom and this one is over and over again listed as a top one. Ill share my expirience with it here. So physical installation was easy if your not handy find someone who is. Before you buy make sure you have a neutral wire, if you dont know what im talking about then you shouldn't be taking on this task its going to be over your head. Always follow instructions. Anyways install was easy. Switch works. Now to connect it to the app. Well after trying over and over to get it to connect. Make sure you select the wemo network to connect to in order for it to start to work. Took many many times to get it to connect and then the app was crashing... dont give up its a pain in the ass but it will be worth it. After leaving it for a hour and going back to it after a few tries it worked. Finally. One it was connected to the app it was easy to connect to my google home hub. Now i can voice control my light and set the dimmer. Its a amazing product. Just a pain in the ass to connect initially. But don't give up. Maybe some of you will get lucky and connect right away and some may end up like me. Also should note the device I use is samsung s10+

3.0 out of 5 stars Good dimmer but not HomeKit compatible!
Reviewed in Canada on July 4, 2020
This is not currently HomeKit compatible, and so should stop being advertised by Amazon and Wemo On their product page as being such.

Proof of this is the item ships with no HomeKit barcode on either the installation instructions nor on the dimmer itself, so this is a known problem. All other current Wemo devices that are HomeKit compatible have the barcode present on device and install paperwork.

You can connect this to the Wemo app using the add device method where the Wemo product generates its own wifi, and then connects to your home network. However after doing so, in Wemo app there is a setting that allows you to “Connect to our smart home partners” and lists Alexa, Google, Apple Home and IFTTT. Navigating to the Apple home brings up a list of your devices. The dimmer has “connect” greyed out. Also navigating to “Settings and About” then “Hardware Info” and picking the dimmer, look down at the HomeKit Setup code field and says “NOT AVAILABLE YET”. And no I’m not yelling, it is on all caps in the app!

I spent 30min on phone with tech support who were very polite and basically it is a known problem with compatibility of the device and HomeKit that the Wemo engineers are working on with Apple. Ok I get it, not everything can be compatible immediately and may need some time in development... before the product is brought to market and advertised as HomeKit compatible.

I asked if Wemo would send a Wemo bridge as a workaround in meantime and wasn’t given a good answer, only that engineers are working on future firmware update.

Basically feel deceived by Wemo and disappointed that Amazon is pushing the dimmer as compatible with HomeKit when it is not.

The dimmer itself works well with Wemo app, and the customizing for LED, CFL etc works well. If you have good LED bulbs they will dim down to almost nothing and all the way to full power with no flicker. My previous dimmer was LED compatible, but could not go as dim as the Wemo and it also flickered unless you ran it to 100% then dimmed. Not so for the Wemo. So the dimmer is good bit HomeKit compatibility is not.

Caveat emptor unless you are willing to forgo HomeKit compatibility until future firmware update...

Just as this wonderful product reaches it's best version..... it's no more. Works as advertised. Get it while you can. One warning. Don't follow the enclosed instructions to link to your network. It won't work. Instead, use the Wemo app from your phone that's connected to your WiFi and add the new device from there. It will work on the first try.
Probably the software has changed. Same thing happened when we installed a newer Wemo light switch awhile ago.
