Now for the bad. Initial setup and channel scan take longer than the scan though my TV's tunner. Also the first scan pulled in fewer channels and with signal issues that I hadn't had though my TV's tunner. That being said after turning my antenna a bit even though it's omnidirectional cured that issue. I also had to experiment with several zip codes before I could get complete guide data for all channels. I live been two large cities and pull stations from both. But after a trying a few zip codes I was good to go. The manual is very basic and gets you set up but offers little beyond that. Channelmasters site was a good resource for figuring out my reception and guide issues. One last negitive I selected two day shipping but channelmaster ignored that and was sent standard ground even though I had paid extra for it. They did however issue a full refund for the shipping after I called them out on it.
Bottom line if you are in the market for a OTA DVR and don't mind a bit of setup and troubleshooting you can't go wrong with this unit.
Before I got this, when I decided to cut my Fios Bill, I started the journey with those really cheap $20 converter boxes that have a USB port for recording. It wasn't bad actually. I tried a few different brands and models, all from here on Amazon. I returned a few that weren't good, but I found a few good ones that were not bad at all (like the Homeworx) but since I use the DVR function mostly, by always pausing and watching in time shift mode, so I can skip commercials. So the cheap USB ports on these boxes couldn't really keep up, the picture would start freezing and skipping after playing for long stretches of time. So it became more and more bothersome with time. So the search continued... I came across, here on Amazon, the refurbished older model of the channel master brand, the Cm7400. So I tried that, loved it, loved the idea, but... It fell a little short, because that model has been discontinued by them, so a lot of options don't function anymore on that model, like no internet channels guide, no internet channels. Etc. So since I liked the box, the DVR is great. And I needed a second box anyway for the bedroom, so I figured I'll spend the money and try this model. And this is it! I love this box! Surprisingly the older model comes with internal memory for DVR, like 300-gb I think. But the new one doesn't, unless you pay extra. So I just hooked up my Toshiba 500 GB external hard drive, it's been working perfectly this whole time. Not one complain.
It bothers me that people blame weak signal issues on the box. Antennas aren't perfect, but don't blame this box, its awesome!
The good: The OTA tuner and 1T external HD work great at scheduling and recording shows. I have an Ethernet cable connected so I get 2ish weeks of the Rovi program guide. Things seem to work decently well. One note- if you get the DVR+ without the internal HD, you can't schedule to record a series until you connect an external HD.
The not so great: The apps are limited, but more importantly the ones it does have are excruciatingly slow. I bought this DVR specifically because it has the Sling TV app. It works, but it is not even close to as responsive as a Roku. The new Roku especially is very quick when navigating around the Sling app. This DVR works decently well, but it lags noticeably. Kind of annoying, but still useable. I also use the Youtube app once or twice a week, and it is beyond laggy. Most inputs when navigating or trying to pause a video or skip a commercial will lag sometimes up to 10 seconds. The YT app also fairly regularly just stops working when it is attempting to load a video. Instead of getting the "loading..." message, the screen goes black and never recovers. Exiting does not recover, and I have to pull the power cable. I know this is all due to the limited processor in this device.
Overall I'd still buy this again for my purposes, which is 90% OTA and 10% Sling TV. It's nice to have one device for both of these viewing modes.
