What's in the box

  • MOBA/MMO Optical Gaming Mouse
  • Quick Start Guide

  • From the manufacturer

    Side Button Layout

We designed the buttons on the Rival 500 to resemble the natural motion of your thumb. All the buttons you use will be easily clickable just by simply rotating your thumb around in a circular motion.

    Flickdown Switches

With a simple flick of the thumb, the two lower buttons are pressed. We wanted to give you the fastest response time for those key bindings, and the best way was to make it as natural as possible.

    Mechanical Button Lock

Not using the bottom buttons? We equipped the Rival 500 with the ability to offer up a comfortable place for your thumb to rest on when not in the heat of battle. Just flick the switch up, and you created yourself a nice little resting spot.

    FEEL YOUR COOLDOWN.

    What Triggers You?

No two alerts are the same! Choose which in-game events trigger a Tactile Alert, and completely control how each one feels. Health, ammo, mana, headshots, and stuns can all be set to trigger alerts.

    Completely Customizable

Customize vibration patterns, durations, triggers and more. Set Tactile Alerts that pulse like a heartbeat when low on HP or a quick buzz to signal every last hit. Choose between vibration patterns including Short and Long Buzz, Fast and Slow Heartbeats, Double-Click, Triple-Click and many more.

    Zero Recoil

Tactile Alerts have been carefully engineered to trigger vertically along the center of your mouse, so you feel the pulse strongly in your palm. The tactile feedback will never impact your mouse’s tracking, meaning you never have to sacrifice your pixel-perfect aim.

    UNRIVALED DESIGN.

    Pixart 3360 Optical Sensor

Out-lane and out-perform with the best optical gaming sensor. Armed with the Pixart 3360, the Rival 500 delivers the truest tracking experience in a gaming mouse to-date.

    Left and Right Click

The Left and Right click buttons are built with a special reinforced plastic, unmatched by any other mouse. This makes the Rival 500 more durable and evenly distributes the force of each click, creating a more consistent feeling.

    30M Click Durability

SteelSeries Switches have a 30 million click lifespan. With this kind of hardware, your Rival 500 will survive even the most demanding competition.

    Thumb Grip

Your thumb needs its safe space! The central area between the buttons serves as the pivot point for your thumb, making it easier to identify the individual buttons and trigger combos effortlessly.

Amazing mouse. 6 thumb buttons that are easy to use!

Amazing mouse. 6 thumb buttons that are easy to use!
After my used to be favorite mouse Logitech G700s started to die I tried several mice and after reading a review about this steelseries rival 500 mouse from a fellow IT Pro I tried it out also and it is Amazing! the 6 thumb buttons are easy to use and ergonomic, this mouse hands down has the best button design and layout over any mouse out there! It is classified as a mmo mouse but the mouse is great for fps games too! the bottom 2 buttons are super easy and quick to use they are raised and stick out you push down to use them, this is great for fast access controls like melee heal, gernade...etc the other buttons are easy to use and reach also. the mouse design and layout is extremely well thought out! I think this mouse should be rated for any game not just mmo's just because it has 13 buttons doesn't mean it is automatically a mmo mouse. most mmo mice with this many buttons are clunky slow to move harder to handle when quick precise movements are needed etc.. this thing tracks fast is comfortable, easy to move around it is quick and precise easy to lift off etc. and with all of these easy to use buttons games like Rust which is a fps survival game those extra buttons come in handy. Software: The software works well took a min to figure it out but it is easy. I was able to create a auto run key by setting a key to toggle hold this helped my wrist pain in game. My only complaint is the software only has 2 dpi settings, you can remedy this by setting up your buttons and copying the profile making a new profile the same as this one but change 1 button to goto the next profile profile1, press button load profile 2 ..etc just copy your profile to the new profile which keeps the button mapping's the same and simply change the dpi settings, I have 4 profiles set so I can have 4 different dpi settings it works flawless, and this brings us to the hepatic feedback "vibrating mouse" In game It was hard to tell which dpi setting I was at in the cycle so I looked in the software and set a different vibration for each profile this way when I press the button to switch dpi I can tell which setting it is on by how it vibrates! you can also change light color's on button press in the same way. Buy this mouse give it a try you will most likely keep it! I love it better than my g700s that it replaced! There is not a mouse out there that gives so many easy to use buttons that works good for any game!
    Thank you for your feedback

Reviewed in Canada on May 14, 2018
//EDIT - year and a half after purchase// The left mouse button has stopped responding consistently. In some instances it can no longer click/drag and in others it does not register clicks at all. Many times the device refuses to wake up properly from sleep and needs to be plugged in again. I am waiting on a replacement via RMA from Steelseries.

#TL;DR - if you're a power user with no special accessibility needs, this is your mouse.

I've been using Logitech mice for ages, multiple generations of the MX series and even managed to burn out the right mouse button by overuse (Dota 1 era)... For the last 2 years I've been using the Logitech Gaming G502. Never thought I'd be able to find a suitable replacement, especially from a different brand.

The Rival 500 is a game changer, even if you don't play games. They get so many small details right.

    #Pros

    * IT CAN VIBRATE?! What a brilliant concept, much better than interactive lighting (who looks at their mouse while using it??). It has some interesting functionality baked in, such as a pulsing heart beat when at low health in Dota 2 or a buzz for Discord notifications. This feature is perfect for situations where you're immersed in a project or game and don't want external visual or audio interfering.
    * Out of the box it retained the same movement as the Logitech G502, no nonsense or tweaking.
    * It's wider and has deeper angle on the right side, my pinky no longer touches the mouse pad!
    * SO MANY BUTTONS! Finally! The buttons are laid out well around the device. EIGHT (!!) buttons on the left, a central button, horizontal scroll, and one on the right for good measure.
    * There's a physical lock to disable the bottom left buttons for folks that accidentally press them. It's sturdy and detected in software.
    * SteelSeries support was responsive and got back to me within a few hours of submitting my tickets.
    * Compared to the Logitech G502 there are fewer areas that could collect dirt.
    * Have a 3D printer? The subtle nameplate is removable and SteelSeries support can provide the 3D model so you can print a custom version! Great if you bring your mouse with you to events.

    #Cons (Physical)

    * The left mouse button is pretty flat, so your finger might gravitate closer to the scroll wheel than the upper left buttons.
    * Like in almost all gaming mouse, lighting is mostly useless whilst using the mouse (again, who looks at their mouse??). That being said, I do understand its benefits from a personalization and branding perspective.
    * The area where the thumb rests in a neutral position has a tiny bit of flex if pressed on.

    #Cons (SteelSeries Engine software)

    * SteelSeries Engine does not have an equivalent to Logitech "G-Shift" - which allows holding a mouse button to change what other buttons does. Personal example: pressing the G-Shift button + right/left scroll act as next/previous media buttons. This is a pain point for power users such as myself that want to eek out as much functionality as possible. Don't make me touch the keyboard!
    * No OSD (on-screen display) option when triggering media buttons

##My wish list for future revisions

    * Indent the left mouse button further so the finger naturally falls into the center of the button, not towards the scroll wheel, making it effortless to click the two top left buttons.
    * Concave the bottom of the mouse further, so even less dirt gets caught on the undercarriage.
    * Put a lighting under the top left buttons, which will always be visible to the user even during use (unless they are left handed but this is a righty only design).

I've had/have a bunch of gaming-centric mice in my time. I currently use an Alienware pro, a Razer Mamba, a G600 and a Naga trinity exclusively for WoW.

    Enter, the Rival 500.

The TL;DR version is: It has the benefits of all the mice, and the cons of none (except maybe to some: the bulkiness, which personally i kinda LIKE)

I'm only going to cover the things that aren't already covered multiple times by every damn review and comparison you will read/see about the R500.

    The weight / bulkiness:
Some people find this a negative factor, people like me find it a positive. It adds a total sense of 'quality' to an item the heavier and well-built it is. It's human nature to feel that way. For those of you pansies who like the featherweight types, the "heavy" weight is easily made up for by the plethora of mouse sensitivity options. It even has a decelerate function, which helps slow your mouse down, even you are at 160000000 DPI it brings the mouse to a silky smooth halt depending on how you set it up. i mean wtf that is epic for any mouse to have.

    Macros:
Damn easy to set up when i compare it to the interface of the rest of the mice. Especially coughcoughrazercough

    Vibrations? yes please:
When I'm not busy setting timers for the vibrations and promptly shoving the mouse up my behind waiting for them to kick in, I use it to tell me when my cooldown or wtvr is complete. less fun than option 1, but more function.
You can assign 10, yes TEN different type of vibrations/tactile feedback for EACH button upon press, upon release, upon the coming of armageddon, you choose!

Useless stuff that no one cares or should care about:
You can remove the back rubber thingy. and make your own thingy! WHAT! yes hold on while i buy a damn 3d printer so i can shove my name into something that is angled towards the damn table surface and literally no one can ever read. There are some uh... removable? pads under the mouse. well they look removable, but theyre stuck. with glue. and they dont stick back after your excited ass tries to half remove them thinking its a weight adjuster. Spoiler alert: ITS NOT.

It does not have "hypershift" functionality. (you cant set 2 actions to the same key by using a 2nd modifier key)

Compared to the naga, its "smoother", has more grip/control and the buttons are easier to not screw up. You will never waste your ulti on that creep ever again.

Compared to the AW, well AW is mostly for the looks so nvm im going to skip this one and save AW some embarrassment..

Compared to the G600, its a toughie. the G600 is a hell of a mouse. The modifier on the right of the g600 has saved me tons of re-programming and has added a lot of ease. Thats a big +1 for the G600. I can't honestly say the rival 500 is BETTER, though i can say they are on par. Whats puts the 500 back up on par is the easy of the side buttons. It is just hella easy moving your thumb more of an up,down, left, right for your actions than the G600's more linear, harder to memorize sort of thumb movement.

The mamba is better in some cases. mainly, if you do work on the same computer that you game. The mamba is such an "effortless" mouse. has all the right buttons in all the right places and hypershift is a godsend if you use it for work.
When it comes down to gaming the 500 kicks it in the butt tho.

Long story short, want a good mouse that covers all the angles? get the rival 500. Want another mouse? Get that instead, always wondering "ermergerd i couldve just moved my thumb up down left right instead of this bullsh**" and then kill yourself.

    kbye.
