Pros.
1. Extremely quite... its quieter than any cpu cooler I've ever bought (around 10). It cools very well and comes with even further noise reduction options (it offers what look like throttle limiters to keep it from going over a certain threshold - assuming your machine stays cool enough - this one stays plenty cool but I opted to not use them anyways I just didnt want to always be checking my temp).
2. Great cooling - I stress tested it to a max of 54 C... compared to the stock fan that let it run up to a whopping 79C (mobo will shut it down at 83C)
3. Setup - Instructions were very easy to follow and everything need was included. I had it setup in under 10 minutes. As stated previously you do need to remove your motherboard to place a new piece on the backside of the motherboard which is a bit of an annoyance but I do feel better knowing I have a solid piece of metal clamping it down now rather than that plastic junk I usually see. Aside from being solid, it came with grip/antivibration padding on the piece that goes underneath the motherboard.
Cons
1. Size... huge doesnt really do this thing justice. it is ENORMOUS. The fans lay over the memory and I had to remove my heat spreaders to place the fan on. I assume with the fan immediately above the memory it is pulling some heat off the memory as well so for now I'm ok with that.
Final thoughts:
This was a bit on the pricey side as far as fans go but I've had enough of the poor cooling or loud noise or erratic throttling fans. I decided to spend good money on a good fan for once rather than the usual 20 or 30 dollar fans and I'm glad I did. This specific product works as intended and is worth the money all the little things they do to make it easier let me know that this is a company I can trust with other products as well
For some strange reason, the stock cooler that came with my i5 chipset ceased to cool properly. Could have been the paste drying out or could have been the cheap cooler that came with the chipset. Either way, it needed replacing. This is the ultimate air cooler, and I will detail why below.
First, the instructions were not only very complete if you paid attention, but there's a website you can go to for even more complete, detailed instructions including pictures if you're having trouble conceptualizing or just have a question. I realize this isn't helpful if your machine is pulled apart, but if you still have your machine running or a second machine, please go to the Noctua website, look up the product you're ordering, and go to the FAQ--before you order or install if necessary. FULL instructions with detailed pictures are in the Noctua.at website FAQ for the Noctua 6 Dual Heatpipe with 140mm/120mm Dual SSO Bearing Fans CPU Cooler NH-D14 - Retail . If you need more than what the pamphlet details, then the information is in there. If not? You can contact customer service. Before purchase, I received an answer to a question within about an hour.
The product itself: As has been mentioned before, this product is of extremely high quality. European engineering has thought of everything. I have a socket LGA1155, and although it doesn't list that socket on the instructions, you can, again, go to the website and check their compatibility list. I would suggest doing that for your motherboard and your socket before you purchase. If your MB isn't listed, please contact customer service. They will be happy to tell you if your MB is compatible. (If it's an ATX LGA1155 or 1156, you're almost guaranteed a perfect fit unless you have the weirdest MB on the planet.)
The longest part of installation was actually removing all the cables and labeling them for later, faster re-installation (I didn't want to have to sort through the SATA cables again since that was a nightmare the first time figuring out which configuration would work with the BIOS). Having a tower or wide case is absolutely essential with this cooler. Measure your cooler beforehand. I did have to take off a 200mm case fan to get the side panel back on my machine, but I probably only lacked about 1cm of clearance with the fan on. It fits very comfortably in my NZXT tower.
I did not remove the RAM during installation (and you shouldn't), but everything else was stripped. Frankly, with the ATX form factor GIGABYTE GA-P67X-UD3-B3 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard , you're going to swear that the cooler won't clear the RAM, but it will--unless you're using some funky wide RAM, in which case Noctua has instructions for removing the heat fins from the RAM to accommodate clearance. My only worry is that the heat pipes, which rise upwards at approximately a 90-degree angle, are about 1/4" away from my slot 4 chip (I'm running 16G of RAM). I worry that the heat rising up through the pipe will burn out that RAM chip, but that could just be an OCD fantasy of mine. Your Mileage May Vary. Some boards have plenty of distance between the RAM slots and the chipset.
Installation took 3.5 hours because of, again, my OCDness. I had a lot of things I wanted to clean/set-up/organize and a fan to remove from the case (1 minute of time). Actual installation of the cooler itself took perhaps 20 minutes because I was going slowly and carefully. You should also go slowly and carefully and pay strict attention to instructions.
Before installation of this product, be certain to clean all the old paste from the chip with some rubbing alcohol and maybe a section of clean tee-shirt (that you're going to throw away). You want a 0.5cm bead of the supplied paste on your chip. Hold the syringe very close to the chip, upright, and then slowly push the plunger. I had to do this twice (cleaning between) before I was satisfied. 0.5cm bead of paste is what Noctua recommends if I'm remembering correctly. Again, check their FAQ.
Now to the meat: Then all you need to do is follow the other instructions. I promise, it's a breeze if you've done your homework beforehand. I was a little worried about putting the monster on my board, but now I'm exceptionally glad I did. With my stock cooler, I was maxing out one of my cores at 78C. That doesn't sound too high, but it was making the BIOS alarm go insane while I was in heavy WvW combat in a MMORPG I like to play ( Guild Wars 2 - PC (Standard Edition) ). After installation, even in the heaviest of combats and keeping my video settings on HIGH, the CPU will go no higher than 55C on the hottest core.
That's a drop of 23C with extremely heavy load after installation of this Noctua product. The machine is idling as low as 27C on some cores (Core 1 & 2 are at 27C right now, 3 is at 32C, and 4 is at 31C).
Trust me that the engineering of this product is worth the extra $20 to get quality and all the support you could possibly ask for.
P.S. I broke two NZXT 120mm case fans in the process of putting the side of my case back on. They were made of the cheaper plastic, and my fumble fingers dropped the edge of the panel onto my glass desk. Twice. (I failed to remember that the 200mm fan on that panel might not clear the cooler...) I was so impressed with Noctua's engineering that I ordered two fans from them Noctua 120mm, 3 Speed Setting Anti-Stall Knobs Design SSO2 Bearing Case Cooling Fan NF-S12A FLX (through Amazon) to replace the ones I broke. High airflow, low decibels.
Now I just need to find a 200mm slimline fan. Wish me luck.
You're going to love this cooler.

With that said though, if you *can* fit this into your case, you will be rewarded with an utterly silent cooler that outperforms some water cooling rigs. On my AMD FX-8370 chip (125W TDP) I have seen peak core temps of 43C. Using the stock AMD cooler, the same loads in similar conditions saw 69C, and the heat sink fan was shrieking like a banshee to do it. And the orientation of the fans blows toward the back side of the case and out, rather than dumping its heat load on the motherboard or on the expansion cards. It's a nice detail.
Note that securing this beast requires (at least on AMD applications) removing the OEM AMD heat sink mounts from the motherboard and attaching a more robust securing plate. It's an easy procedure, but it does require a case that provides access to the back side of the motherboard, or removing the board entirely.
Packaging and instructions are all very well done. It even includes a screwdriver, plus it comes with thermal paste.
The only rock I can throw at it is that the fans themselves (which can be moved around on the heat sink to provide component clearance) are 3-pin non-PWM fans rather than 4-pin PWM. It's an odd decision, given that Noctura makes 4-pin fans - but really, the fans are inaudible even at full speed, so the loss of extra fan speed control precision that you get with the PWM fans is no penalty.
So long as you have the case room to fit it, this is an excellent cooler.
