Daily Fitness MonitoringThanks to Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology¹, vívosmart 3 activity tracker is full of great features that let you get a better idea of your current fitness level. For example, it’s our first dedicated activity tracker to offer VO2 max estimate. It can even estimate your fitness age, which you may be able to decrease over time with hard work and regular exercise. |
Wellness Monitoringvívosmart 3 tracks heart rate variability (HRV), which is used to calculate and display your stress level. You can look at this graph right on your device anytime you’re sitting or at rest. When the level starts to move up, it indicates that your stress is getting higher. What causes this? Any number of physical or emotional external sources. vívosmart 3 helps you recognize when this is happening so you can find a way to relieve the stress. |
Your Personal Rep CounterGym rats, rejoice. We’re adding a companion to your workout — or more specifically, a companion that’s great at keeping count. When you start a strength training activity on vívosmart 3, the device will capture your exercises, reps and sets along with your work and rest times so you can leave the notebook at home. That data gets pushed to Garmin Connect during your next sync so you can review your workout in even greater detail. |
Smart Notifications and Smarter FeaturesTo help keep up with your busy lifestyle, you can view emails, text messages and social network notifications right on your wrist. Other features that help you stay linked with life include automatic uploads to Garmin Connect and compatibility with TrueUp, which lets you synchronize multiple activity trackers. The ability to find your phone and music controls are also available right at the wrist. |

Some things to note- Yes it’s fully water resistant but when you go into the water it’s hard to track your swimming performance since the water interferes with the touchscreen. When I was in the water I noticed after I came out that the band and even the device itself had several blue spots on it as if some of the chemicals from the pool leached onto it, after a quick rinse in the sink and a bit of soap it seems to have gotten much better and should continue to improve after being cleaned more. As mentioned my band hasn’t broken yet even after taking the device on and off several times already and using it while I sleep and in everyday use for the last 5 days I’ve owned it. I’ll update thus review if needed, otherwise go ahead and buy this works quite well and after use it has gotten easier to use and does what I want it to.
UPDATE: It’s been nearly a year now 5-7-19 and so far no issues been using it almost daily taking it on and off. Battery still lasts nearly the entire week 4-5 days even after numerous recharges, I’ve used it for fitness and have gone in the pool with it once or twice. Also with updates it has become more responsive and faster/easier to use. I might have been one of the lucky ones but so far so good after nearly a year which will be on June 7th.
UPDATE: Over one year later it’s now September 2019 and I’ve had zero issues, battery life is easily 4-5 days and it keep accurate measurement of my heart rate and steps when walking also does a pretty good job with elevation tracking. I’ve also gotten it wet and have worn it in the pool twice without issue. If you can find it at a great price then go for it.
1) not always on display. I work from home and I need something to keep my active but not constantly in my face.
2) I love the move bar, at first I didn't like it but then I figured out how to get it to clear properly and now it's the best since I sit all day.
3) I really like the silent alarms. The other trackers I tested were very loud vibrating, one even woke up my boyfriend when it went off. This one I have set to low and it gently wakes me
3) Sleep data and not just how long I slept.
4) constant heart rate tracking, I want to keep tabs on my heart overall and not just during an activity.
These are the things I've really loved. There are a few things I'm bummed about.
1) I love that I can use it while swimming but there is still no way for the tracker to track swimming. I'm a swimmer but I swim for fun so I don't want a dedicated swim tracker or something with a huge screen. I was hoping that this would be nice but it's only so-so. It also took a bit to figure out how to swim with it too, the Vivosmart HR lets you lock the screen which is great for water sports but this one doesn't. The best I could do was turn off gestures and wait for the display to turn off which meant I couldn't really keep tabs on my swim. I also think you can put it on the Do not disturb mode but I haven't checked to see how that works in water.
2) The app has many activities you can log but the device is limited to only a handful, which wouldn't be terrible if you could pick your favorites. I like to hike, walk, swim and do yoga daily. Most of these have to be logged under other because there is nothing on the tracker for it. It's not terrible but I do need to constantly tweak my activities.
3) A bit bummed that they didn't opt to include GPS with this device since the HR+ had it.
4) The thing that does bother me is the inability to properly sync with other apps. Currently they only have 3 apps they approve and if you don't like the way those work you are stuck with having to export from you app of choice and hope the import data comes in properly. As of now I use MyFitnessPal and all my syncs to them are titled "Generic Workout" which is a mess. I like Wahoo since I can do GPS on my phone and broadcast my heart rate through the tracker to get a better picture of my activity. But again I need to export to garmin and I haven't found a way yet to merge data/activities.
I'm hoping that as time goes new updates come out that will include more customizing options to make the trackers tailored to the user. As of now I've been using for about 3 days and plan to update this in a few weeks to see if there is any other problems or new things I discover.
2 WEEK UPDATE: Since getting this there are a few issues I've come across and quirks I've worked out. For one in order to use this while swimming you do indeed need to turn off gestures, it's the best way for it to not keep pausing your workout. I have yet to figure out a good way to track my swimming since there's no option on the tracker itself. I hoped since it was doing strength training with reps that maybe that could be useful but I haven't figured it out yet. That being said strength training rep count is a cool feature. I've used it a handful of times. It's not super precise if you move to quick you have to be steady and the app let's you specify what workout you did. Sometimes it even registered properly what it's doing others it had no clue. The IQ movement thing is cool but since you can't edit it nor have it show up in your dashboard it seems kinda useless. I've also had a few hiccups with it, one day the alarm didn't go off at all and I have no clue why, it worked the next fine. As of now if I need to be up at a certain time I set my phone as a backup. Today I had a major annoyance as I was walking out for the gym. For some reason my tracker decided to pair itself to my phone again while I was trying to broadcast HR. I'm not sure why but it totally threw a wrench in my plan. I couldn't pair to my phone for about ten minutes and after I finally had it set up I couldn't get the music control to work. I walked to the gym, swam and came back and it wasn't until I removed my device from my phone and re added did it start to work again. The last thing is the move bar. I like that I can do things like walk to reset it or some fast dancing but I am a bit annoyed that it has to be continuous until it clears or it will completely negate any progress you make to clear the bar. This can be annoying if you are walking to clear it and need to stop to do something or when sometimes you are still moving but not "enough" for it to register. I've had multiple times where my bar line is blinking clear and then it just comes back completely like I sat down or something. Or in other cases while grocery shopping which is about an hour of random walking the move bar didn't clear at all. I guess a leisurely or slow walk will never register movement which is kinda stupid because you are moving.
