Ok, I've checked the WiFi connectivity of my primary unit and the second one I got for my better half. Both function at my place and my parent's place. So I'm pretty sure it's the bogus WiFi at my place of work =/
I'm relieved that it's not a fault with my C100. Yay Asus!
Update - 08/19/2015
This thing continues to impress. I've set up Chrome Remote Desktop to remotely access my now only windows PC (gaming) and it works flawlessly. I'm able to run windows applications in house from my desktop easily and setup was a snap. Kudos to Google for provided a very solid remote desktop solution. I've also ran games like WoW and Hearthstone on my C100 using this method for poops and giggles. It worked surprisingly well, especially hearthstone. All that's required is an internet connection. I may actually re-purpose some hardware and build an ESXi server and virtualize a 'working environment' solely for Chromebook access. VMware VSphere has a web client so I think I'll be able to directly access virtual windows/linux directly from my Chromebook without the need to first use Chrome Remote Desktop.
Very pleased with my purchase. I will defin
Update - 08/03/2015
I'm still loving my C100. I went out of town on a trip and this guy kept me connected no problem. Now that I'm back, and back at work (day job), my C100 has issues connecting to the company WiFi. I've never had issues in the hotel, on the road connected via phone wireless hot spot, and at home. My job's network does leave a lot to be desired though so that may have something to do with it. I've tested by putting my phone in Wireless Hot Spot mode and it connected flawlessly. I'll try on my home network and report back. I'm assuming it's just the crummy WiFi at my job, but wanted to report it here anyways. Other than that, this thing still rocks and still looks brand new! I have two of them in the house and I've all but replaced all Chromebooks with these models at my company. I'm SO sad that the 4GB model is sold out! I love these so much I wanna grab a few more for my folks and siblings! Please Amazon/ASUS; please bring more in stock!
I also noticed that the price for the 2GB model dropped! I'm loving the new prices of $229 and $259 for the 2GB and 4GB models respectively. Making a great product even better with at those price points!
Also, to those who've received models that had issues - not everything is perfect off the line. QA usually just tests a percentage in a batch before signing off for the batch to go out the door. I've seen it in Acer, HP, Dell, Alienware, and others for years. It happens, sucks, but it happens. I love Amazon in that they offer a very generous return policy. Prime is even better! But I digress - I'd happily, and probably will, buy a few more of these Asus C100s in the 4GB variant.
Update - 07/29/2015
I'm still very VERY pleased with this machine. I was originally concerned with the performance of the processor, but I've been multitasking like a mad mad. Yesterday I held a video hangout with a family member for the better part of 3 hours. No problems or hiccups. We were able to video chat with ease while I continued to check email, read articles, and then ended up presenting desktops to go over his numbers to start his own business. All done from my little ASUS C100. ASUS really did a bang up job on this little guy. And I'm always getting complements when I pull my C100 out around friends and family members. One individual thought this was a Mac Book of some kind! That is until he spotted the Chrome emblem. He's a die hard Apple guy and he was geeking out over my little C100 and the fact I only paid $259 for it (4gb model). I think I'm good with this guy for the next long while.
I've been eye'ing the Nexus 9 but the LTE model is $499! Add the keyboard folio for $125-135 and you get a similar experience to the laptop/tablet functionality of an ASUS C100 without the touchpad for $624! I'd still love a Nexus Tablet, but for that price I can definitely wait. The C100 has my back until then =)
AMAZON / ASUS - Add more 4GB models to stock so that I may start phasing out all my other company CB's with the ASUS C100! And purchase them for friends and family! Best gift ever! For yourself or otherwise!
Update - 07/24/2015
I've used the C100 for a week now for personal and business use. So far I've been able to do all my personal stuff (surfing, email, web vids, Netflix/Hulu/etc both on the C100 and cast to my 70" flat screen via Chromecast) and everything works really well. I've not noticed any more stutter than what I'd come to expect on my Acer C720P - not much stutter at all. I've also conducted various video conferences, hangout chat rooms with family and employees, drafted policies and procedures and company letters, converted docs to PDF, filled out other PDFs and signed them, and all this on my C100 alone. It performs very well and will be my go-to machine for anything I may happen to need. I also have VMs built to provide additional functionality and this device performs great in that regard too. I'm loving the solid aluminum build, keyboard, and screen. Tablet mode is a God send when I have lengthy reports to read through as I can find a comfy spot on the sofa in my lounge and read with my feet kicked up. I already received my second C100 4GB model from Amazon - it'll probably go to my better half. This has become the gift I get people for its affordable price and solid build/performance.
I even played a bit of Cut the Rope (albeit in web format) but it was STILL fun and surprisingly fluid! Not for hard core Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt gaming however, but more android based games are going web now so I think for casual gaming (like you do on your phone) this thing is as solid as any other Chromebook out there. Plus Google ARC is in beta so it's just a matter of time before we start seeing all those android games/apps we know and love start populating the Chrome Web Store.
Original Review:
I can't say enough good things about this device. I pre-ordered the 4GB and received it in the mail Sunday, July 19th. Shipping was fast as always w/ Prime and the device was well packaged. ChromeOS boots up in SECONDS on this thing. It might be a tad slower than my Acer C720P, but that's driven with a Haswell Intel processor. Still this Rockchip proc w/ 4GB of ram are still snappy and I find the difference between my two chromebooks negligible. Power efficiency is a vast improvement over my C720P, and that thing has an awesome battery life! I essentially can now leave my home without worrying about bringing the included charger for my C100. However, the charger for the C100 is also way smaller than that of my C720P so it's even lighter/easier to stuff in my bag and bring with me if I want.
This thing is a blast in laptop AND tablet mode - something I didn't really expect but was pleasantly surprised with. Everything works as advertised and works well.
I've migrated away from Microsoft products due to the expense, hardware requirements, and vulnerability surface area that is inherent in MS. I find I do a lot of my computing on the web via Software as a Service (Gmail, Google Calendar, Google All Access, Hangouts, Docs, Sheets, etc.). I also own my own business dealing in real estate investments and have migrated my entire enterprise and data away from MS products and onto Google Apps Unlimited. With that business solution I have UNLIMITED cloud storage that I can use for literally any kind of data - Software, Pictures, Videos, Presentations, Documents, any kind of data. My employees now have work Chromebooks instead of laptops, my IT guys have it made with easy domain/device management, desktops have been converted to either Chromeboxes and Chromebases and soon Chromebits, and I've saved a small fortune in hardware/software costs! I've not missed MS or the traditional PC at all as 90% of what we all do can be done via web solutions - the cloud (both personal and business) being the heart of everything and our devices (phones, tablets, laptops, desktops, and even displays like stand-alone monitors and TVs via Chromecast and soon Chromebit for full on ChromeOS desktop experience) acting as an extension of that heart. But I digress...
The ASUS C100 is an awesome addition for anyone looking for a lightweight machine to surf the web, answer email, schedule meetings (calendar), hold chats with 1 or more people (Hangouts), video/voice telecons (also Hangouts). Chrome apps/extensions can be installed via the Chrome Web Store to enhance your experience, and the Android App Runtime for Chrome is out in beta now so it's only a matter of time before we see android goodies on the web store as well. I believe Evernote is already available for chrome now with the new runtime.
I should also note that the last 10% of things that I can't do native on the Chromebook I can do via Platform as a Service. I'm also a developer and require the use of CAD for some rehab/construction projects (though not usually). I can work from my chrome product via Google Cloud Platform - it's essentially a VM or series of VM's on the Cloud that runs whatever you want (Windows and AutoCAD/AutoDesk). All of the heavy lifting and processing are done on the cloud back end and your chromebook/box/base/bit acts as a front end display and control interface. Yes you need an internet connection to do this kinda work but when will you EVER be without internet? I walk down the street in any direction and my phone goes off with all kinds of WiFi access points. I dare say you may even be able to do hardcore video editing. The cost of PaaS is relatively insignificant when compared to hosting all your services in-house. Believe me, I've been there - never EVER wanna go back.
So there you have it - Bottom line this thing rocks. I'll be placing an order for another one for my fiance and possibly another for a gift for my little brothers graduation.
I plugged the very small A/C adapter in, opened the lid (like the macbook, the Flip isn't the easiest to open since it's so thin), and in seconds was connected to my fast FIOS wifi service. I elected to give the Flip a try using guest access, and in in another few seconds I was browsing the internet. The pages all loaded as quickly as those using my macbook air, and the Flip's screen actually surpassed in color rendition and clarity that of my MBA. Now, my references herein to my macbook air aren't intended to denigrate it; rather, I hold the macbook air up as a near perfect computer, and was shocked that the ASUS Flip matched and in some cases actually exceeded the MBA. Needless to say, macbooks can do things a chromebook cannot, but I wanted to give those intending to use the Flip for internet browsing, emails, movie streaming and the like a comparison with an outstanding computer like the macbook air.
I've been "auditioning" low cost ($200-$300) notebook computers for some time now, both chromebooks and the Windows options out there, and in all cases I just couldn't make the significant compromise required to get past their low-quality, washed out LCD's. Notably, the Flip features IPS screen technology, like you will find on iPads. The Flip's screen is vibrant, and unlike some other reviewers, I found the screen to be quite bright. In fact, along with the overall build quality, the quality of the screen is one of the Flip's most notably pleasing features.
As much as I appreciate the screen, I think the trackpad is the very best I've ever used. It scrolls with two-fingers accurately and responsively, without "stuttering" or the need to retrace your path; and like the macbook air the entire trackpad is "clickable," and particularly responsive.
The keyboard looks and feels like ... that of the new 12" macbook. While it may take some time to get completely comfortable with the slighter smaller keyboard, I'm finding little difficulty in doing so.
I didn't expect the quick page loading as I browsed the internet that I am getting from the Flip. As other reviewers have noted, it is plenty fast, but I did opt for the 4GB of RAM. While l hadn't heard of the processor's manufacturer before, their 1.8GHz processor is running fast and smooth so far. With no fans, the Flip runs noiselessly, too.
I checked the overall internet speed of the Flip to gauge it's WiFi adapter and overall system performance, and consistently averaged 75 down and over 80 up on both the Flip and 13" macbook air using my 75/75 FIOS connection. Retesting has shown speeds in that range to be the norm.
Since these are only my initial impressions of the Flip, I intend to update this review with my further experiences in the coming week(s).
One thing you will note: I haven't even mentioned the price. I'm amazed at what I have here for $259; it doesn't seem possible the Flip could be this good!
July 27 update:
I've used the Flip extensively all weekend, and it is still "incredible!" I have installed a VPN which, for Chrome, wasn't always that easy ... and I am anything but an expert on VPN installation; however, after a little internet research, I installed a VPN in minutes and it has worked flawlessly so far.
The main feature I miss, but didn't expect in a notebook at this price, is a lighted keyboard. When you think about it, and given its small size, using the Flip fairly frequently in a dark bedroom would be common practice, and I bet a future model might well offer such a keyboard.
I've watched Netflix with no issues, no buffering, etc., and while Chrome doesn't support an app for Slingbox, an easy "workaround" is to use the Facebook Slingbox. I'd never heard of it before, but it works without any issues.
At this point, I'm just hoping the Flip continues to work so well. I will update this review as I gain more experience in using the ASUS Flip.
August 9th Update:
Have now been using the Flip for hours each day, and it continues to excel. The feel of the solid aluminum case makes it a pleasure to open each day.
I've come to really appreciate the keyboard, both the key spacing and the positive feeling you get as each key registers. I compare the keyboard favorably with that of my 13-inch macbook air, even though it is smaller.
The touchpad continues to be the best I've ever used...scrolling is smooth and I don't find myself having to "go back" and re-scroll. Clicking the touchpad results in assured positive feedback. You can "right click" using a two finger click just like on a macbook.
I continue to be amazed at the speed of this small laptop. I get no spinning colored balls or the like...it's highly responsive. Web pages load almost instantaneously.
Streaming movies and my Slingbox all work flawlessly, almost always with no buffering. I continue to find the bright, crisp IPS screen excellent, and don't share some other reviewers' feelings that the 1280 x 800 resolution is a weakness. I had been searching for a small laptop, and the major problem with others in the $200-300 price range was their washed-out, low resolution LCD screens.
The speakers are certainly adequate, but I never do any serious listening on laptop speakers anyway so perhaps I'm not a good reference point. With Bluetooth built into the Flip, better sound is easily obtained.
I was able to purchase the 4GB model from Amazon, which has now been out of stock for about two weeks. I cannot find it elsewhere, either. While I haven't used the 2 GB model, all I can advise is that the 4GB configuration really flies!
The aluminum case of the Flip seems to me to be identical in design and of similar quality as that of a macbook air; and the overall build quality is like that of a far more expensive laptop.
One point I'd make in response to several other reviews I've read relates to the fact that the Flip offers only WiFi connectivity. I access the internet with the Flip using both WiFi and my iPhone's "Personal Hotspot" connection, and it works perfectly on cellular as well as WiFi. I also continue to use a VPN service which I installed on the Flip, and the connections are fast and stable; I've yet to have a connection drop.
After using the Flip for about three weeks, I have a good feel for battery life, and it is as good as other reviewers have suggested. I never have to think too much about, and just plug it in every night or two.
I will update this review again as my experiences dictate. At this point, I am beginning to think a quality-built chromebook like this ASUS Flip will be my preferred notebook in the future.
If you have any specific questions, I will be happy to try to answer them.
UPDATED -- August 14, 2016 -- Owned for 1 year
As promised, I am updating my review of the ASUS Flip Chromebook, this time after almost 13 months of ownership.
I have had absolutely NO issues whatsoever with this Chromebook, and use it about 3-4 hours daily. Everything I stated in my earlier reviews remains valid, including the incredible battery life.
If a smaller, very INEXPENSIVE but highly responsive notebook computer featuring a fantastic IPS screen, very nice (and not at all too small) keyboard, highly responsive touchpad and "Apple-esque" design and quality is something you are considering, I couldn't possibly recommend a chromebook more highly than the ASUS Flip.

All in all, y después de mucho... muchísimo research, si buscas una chromebook con las características arriba descritas y no quieres romper el cochinito, this is the one.
*Nota: no olvides canjear tus 100gb de storage por 2 años en Drive si lo adquieres ; )
If you're already an Android user and/or familiar with how Chrome works and its apps, you're going to find this pretty intuitive. If you're used to a PC, you'll find that you need to keep reminding yourself that this device runs using apps and works more like a really amazing giant smartphone than it does, say, a traditional PC laptop. That said, after a week or so of being a bit awkward with the software, everything started to feel very natural and easy. Between the Chrome web store and Google Play, there's not much this baby can't do (although I was a bit pissed off that I couldn't watch Blue Jays games on MLB.tv in a pinch). I don't currently use it or hold it like a tablet very much, but I find myself alternating between the keyboard, mousepad, and touchscreen modes of interacting in a way that feels organic and convenient depending on what I'm doing. I highly recommend using OnlyOffice instead of Microsoft Word Online/Office Online if you're using this for writing/homework, and you'll quickly find that there are a few apps that are really useful and some that you won't use at all. The screen is clear, the speakers are good enough that I can throw on Spotify and bop around my kitchen while listening, and the battery life and charging time are fantastic.
However, as someone who wants something small, durable, portable, fast, and user-friendly, this absolutely fits the bill and was priced very nicely. May not be the best choice for someone who requires really specific technical parameters for particular programs but as a student who also uses the laptop every day for recipes, news, web browsing, lots of emailing, and writing/research, this was a perfect choice for me and would highly recommend to folks who want something similar.
Also, I should add that if you're not particularly tech-savvy (I'm not a total noob, but I'm not as up to speed as I'd like to be) there is a lot of support in the form of forums and guides available for Chromebook users. You can Google and troubleshoot just about anything.
