    Product Description

Nucleus is a family communication device that connects you with the people you love, whether they’re downstairs or across the country.

    From the Manufacturer

Nucleus brings you closer: Voice Activated Communication

Make audio and video calls by simply saying ‘Alexa, ask Nucleus to call Kitchen

Nucleus on the go: Feel at home from anywhere

Instantly connect to any Nucleus device in your home straight from our free mobile apps.

“This new smart video intercom can do everything Amazon's Echo devices do” - Business Insider

“The Nucleus Intercom is a good option if you want a simple way to communicate with the family in a larger home, or video chat with less technically savvy loved ones.” - PC Mag

“The Nucleus integration with Alexa works exactly the same way as with Amazon Echo-- except Nucleus has a touch screen. That's helpful when, as is sometimes the case, you ask Alexa to play music only to end up yelling at it when you want it to stop, or having to unplug Echo to shut it off. Nucleus solves that pesky problem by letting you shut off or change the music by clicking on the screen if Alexa doesn't hear you.” - Inc. Magazine

Nucleus connects to Alexa, Amazon's cloud-based voice service. Just ask Alexa to listen to your favorite music, hear the news and weather reports, connect your smart home devices and more. Alexa is always getting smarter and adding new features and skills. Too busy to make dinner between work and picking up the kids? Ask Alexa for your favorite take-out spot's phone number or even order a pizza from the Domino's skill. Together, Nucleus and Alexa make the home front a little easier to manage and a lot more fun.

Note: When active, get Alexa's attention by tapping the Alexa button. Nucleus does not currently support Spotify and Pandora with Alexa at this time. The Alexa Voice Service is available in the US only.

    About the Startup

How did you come up with the idea for this product?

We’re building Nucleus for our families and families everywhere. Jonathan developed Nucleus to keep track of his kids around the house and to create a simpler way to stay in touch with his relatives near and far. We’ve since heard from customers that wish they could see their family members more often. ow, thanks to Nucleus, they can.

    What makes your product special?

Nucleus enables you to spend more quality time with your family, no matter where they are. We’ve heard from families all over the world that use Nucleus to call their kids down to dinner, or check in on an elderly parent that lives alone. It was designed to let you tap one button and feel like you’re in the same room with the people you love, whether that room is upstairs or across the globe.

What has been the best part of your startup experience?

The best part has to be the wonderful and amazing stories we’ve heard from customers. We’ve had customers buy Nucleus for an aging parent in a rehab facility; for a young child that lives in a different city than her father; and for plenty of families that just want a better home intercom to make their lives a little calmer and more sane.

A really rocky start. I want to believe, but there's serious fixes needed.

A really rocky start. I want to believe, but there's serious fixes needed.
So, I'm really excited to have this thing. I'm pretty much the ideal use case, as I need three of them:1 for me, working remotely, missing my wife and kids.1 for my family, 2000 miles away, so that I can talk to them everyday.1 for the grandparents, even further away. My mom is currently recovering from a series of bad accidents that ended up with some serious long term recovery. I want to be able to check up on them often.Yes, I know we could Skype. That's turned out to be too much of a task for grandma, so I liked the "plug and play, just push a button to call" part. This was a nicety for my kids too. They're totally computer literate, but like the novelty of this "magic picture frame".I ordered the three pack and set up the first one (the family's) at home. Teach my wife the basics, including the privacy slider window. Hop on a plane, 5 hours later, set up the 2nd where I am. Anxiously, I try it out.The good:1. For a few minutes, I get to see my wife and kids, and hear their voices. The humanizing effect of this is the real win. But then...The bad:1. Video quality is generally terrible, even on the best calls. If I get 2 frames per second, it's a good call. It feels a little like I'm dialing in from outer space. When it's stuck in "harsh black and white mode" (see point 3 below), it feel even more like calling in from outer space.2. Mid-call, video and audio hangs a lot. I mean, a whole lot. When the video hangs, everything just stops. No sound, and the video is stuck on the last frame it had before it hung. (Side note in case Nucleus is listening in here: from what I've been able to tell, it appears that the call on the other end _might_ still be showing video and sound of me when this happens. I don't think that it's (always) simultaneous.3. If you start a call with the privacy slider window closed and then open it, everything is really severely black and white - like night vision goggles but less green. The only way to fix this is to hang up and call back again.4. Status of remote stations constantly flips back and forth from offline to online.5. The WiFi stack in this doesn't appear to support the 5 GHz range. I can only see 2.4 GHz hotspots. This means the device contends with every other thing on the 2.4 GHz frequency, including Bluetooth and my microwave oven. On a positive note, I now know that my microwave oven is trying to kill me, since calls cut out every time the microwave is turned on while using the thing.6. It randomly reboots the whole machine sometime during approximately every 3rd call or so. Reboots seem to happen more when the hanging behavior (see item 2 above) starts. Now, in fairness, this is a decent start. I really, really, really want to like this device. The setup experience is easy - in fact, it's so easy that grandma (and grandpa) can do it when I put theirs in the mail and send it to them. On the other hand, I'm not ready to do that yet, because the other issues will cause them too much frustration. So, I'm holding out for a software update to fix many of these problems. Getting the WiFi card to see 5.0 GHz access points won't be a software fix (unless the hardware can really do this already, but the software turns that off, which would be hard to believe), so I'll have to live with that and hope the software stability improves to compensate for this problem. Also, for mine (the remote work one) I'm going to try plugging this into the router directly with a wire and see if I can just skip past all the WiFi problems. If this works, great, but it would be a real shame to essentially tether it, and there's no real way to do so at my home, because the router is neatly hidden away in the basement.Sigh.So, I'll invest another day or two into trying to get this happy, but for $600 for the three, I'm on my last bit of patience. They either shape up quickly, or all go back.
