Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

I have seen more and more positive reviews on Amazon.com from other buyers. The overall score has gradually improved from 3.6 out of 5 stars to 3.8. That may be slight, but it’s the first true rise it's had since it's fall. It may just be that Microsoft has finally got all those glitches and bugs under control, and now is a safest time as any to invest in the Surface line. For those still experiencing defects with your Surface Pro 4, don't give up, Microsoft Customer Service will work with you to provide a fully functioning working unit, as they have done for me. Give them a call, go to your local Microsoft Store, or email them at SurfaceCustomerCare@microsoft.com.
It should be noted that with each Surface Pro 4 unit, ALL the latest updates and drivers from Microsoft for the Surface Pro 4 were installed first, before any other action was taken. All third party programs, software, and setups were completed once the updates were current and the latest drivers were installed. Software and programs I use include Adobe Creative Suite and Anime Studio Pro 11. I purchased the i7 256GB SSD, 16GB RAM Surface Pro 4 unit.
Here is my review for my current Surface Pro 4 device:
July 1st, 2016. My Current and 4th Surface Pro 4:
When I first heard the announcement for Surface Pro 3 during Microsoft's Conference on May 20th, 2014, I was intrigued. Microsoft had truly caught my attention, for the Surface Pro 3 looked like a serious contender to Apple's Mac line; however, I opted to not buy one and chose instead to follow the rumors and updates for the Surface Pro 4 from that time until the day of it's official announcement on October 6th, 2015. The Surface Pro 3 had been a success in the business and scholastic world, yet it had not reached all of my expectations. I wanted a Surface Pro that had a "retina" display, a more powerful processor, higher SSD storage, higher RAM, better battery life, a better keyboard, an upgraded Surface Pen, and a more fluid OS. Needless to say, when the Surface Pro 4 and Book were officially announced, I was terribly excited. On paper, they met those expectations.
The Surface Pro 4 offered the latest intel processors (up to an i7-6650U Skylake), Intel Iris 540 graphics, up to 16GB RAM, and up to a 1TB Solid State Drive Storage. It has a 12.3 screen (slightly larger than the Surface Pro 3), with a high resolution "Retina" display, which they have named the "PixelSense display". The display has a resolution of 2736 x 1824 or 267 PPI. The wireless is the latest 802.11ac. I had recently purchased a Linksys 802.11ac Wi-Fi Router, so this excited me greatly. The latest Bluetooth 4.0 wireless technology. 9 Hours of battery life. An updated Surface Pen. And equally important, their new OS Windows 10 with Windows hello, a more traditional start menu, Cortana, and so many other OS specific features.
Again, when the Surface Pro 4 and Book were announced, I was terribly excited. Expectations met, I placed a preorder immediately. My current Surface Pro 4 has fulfilled all those expectations, with the exception of the battery life, ranging from 5-6 hours in battery saver mode with video playback, and not the marketed 9hr life. Though, I have noted that those utilizing a Surface Pro 4 with a smaller processor (i3 – i5) have reported better battery life. I purchased the Surface Pro 4 with an i7 intel processor. So if you are in school, frequent long trips, or have extended business hours away from a power outlet, you should plan on having a battery pack for the occasional plug-in charge (like the Lizone 40000 mAH/148h on Amazon.com).
Aside from a lesser battery life than marketed, the Surface Pro 4 works like a champ. I have been using Adobe Creative Suite Software for photo and video editing and Anime Studio Pro 11 with ease. Windows 10 has been updated to near perfection since it's launch, and is fully optimized with the Surface Pro 4.
Though my initial experience with the Surface Pro 4 was undeniably terrible, enduring one defective Surface Pro 4 after another over the space of several months, Microsoft Customer Service has always been a pleasant and professional experience during that time. With each defective Surface Pro 4, they provided every trouble shooting option available. When these trouble shooting options proved to fail, Microsoft Customer Service always exchanged the defective device for another one. After 2 defective replacement units, the third replacement and 4th Surface Pro 4 has been a fully functional working device. It has not had any glitches, bugs, or problems. It has been a flawless, premium experience. The same flawless, premium experience you would expect from an Apple device.
Upon having a satisfying experience with a fully functional Surface Pro 4, and receiving an outstanding customer service experience from Microsoft, I give the Surface Pro 4 overall experience 5 out of 5 stars.
It earned 4 stars for the Surface Pro 4 becoming the fully functional working device I paid to have, and 5 stars for Microsoft Customer Service being exceptional.
PROs-
1) Better performance than the full-size laptop it replaced- when they say it can replace your laptop, they're absolutely right. It does everything the old machine can do, and then some.
2) Windows Hello facial recognition is both incredibly cool and allows for much faster logins- using your face to unlock a computer really feels like "the future"
3) It's light - so much so that carrying it around in a leather folio case feels like I'm carrying a sketchbook not a computer.
4) With some light tweaking, the pen and touch screen sensitivity are excellent.
5) Has more than enough horsepower to run android emulators like bluestacks or DuOS, which is handy to be able to run any android apps you might be wishing for (this is especially important given Con # 2 below)
But there were some issues, especially when I first received it, some of which have been fixed with subsequent software updates-
1) Periodic issues with display driver freezes (Fixed for me now) - This one would have been a killer if it hadn't been fixed. It only every happened to me three or four times and always while I was doing something "clever" with the machine like running a virtual machine or an android emulator, but it was really irritating as it required a hard power off. Knock wood a software fix last week seems to have knocked this one out (I can't reproduce it anymore), but folks with unpatched machines will still see it and a few folks on forums are still reporting them, so it may still be out there in the wild.
2) The "tablet experience" is a bit different than with most tablets, primarily because the Windows app store is a bit of a wasteland - If you're buying a surface expecting an app ecosystem like android or ios has, you're in for an unpleasant surprise. I knew what to expect going in, so I had no illusions, but other than the core apps that Microsoft itself provides and a few must haves (like netflix, etc.) you're not going to find a lot of your app staples. You can easily work around this issue for many apps by just running the full desktop version or running them in a browser. In the worst case of "must have" apps that can't be worked around, you can use an emulator like bluestacks (lightweight) or DuOS (which basically creates a complete virtual android experience). Bottom line, if you're looking for a laptop that you can also use as a tablet w/ a stylus for web-browsing, pdf markup, and reading e-books, the Surface Pro is phenomenal, but if you're in it for the tablet apps and the "laptop" part is secondary you might be happier with a higher end android tablet.
3) Occasional software hiccups- Once or twice the camera or touchpad or something else has stopped responding. Sometimes detaching the type cover and reattaching it fixed it. Once I had to reboot. It's intermittent, and will probably be fixed in a future firmware update, but if that kind of thing bugs you, it will happen occasionally.
4) Sleep issues (easy workaround)- there's a well-known issue where some Surface's lose battery when they sleep, probably because they're waking up unexpectedly (mine sometimes gets hot in my brief case). Microsoft is working on a fix (for release in the new year according to a rep on the forums), but there's an easy workaround for (enable hibernate). Since switching to hibernate, I've seen no sleep or battery issues.
So bottom line- it's an awesome laptop that moonlights as a "pretty good" tablet; it has some software quirks right now, but most of them are either easy to work around and/or likely to be fixed soon. One piece of major advice: buy a type cover you won't regret it.
