It took less than 5 minutes to connect to the internet. I installed the iHome app on my phone and then told it I wanted to setup the Alarm Clock. It walked me through the setup and was connected very quickly. After that, I use the iHome app to setup the alarm style and to customize some other features. You can setup the alarm with voice commands but you need to further customize alarms in the Alexa app.
Alexa works great. I love the fact that I can listen to audiobooks and music just like with Alexa. Most of the Alexa things work great like news and weather. I can still control my smart hub and devices with Alexa.
Not everything worlks. Spotify doesn't allow spotify to work with third part Alexa apps. You can use spotify premium through the iHome app or you can use any Spotify with Bluetooth. I hear you can't make Alexa calls with this, but to be honest I don't really get the feature for the regular Alexa too. It just doesn't make sense to me so I'm not going to miss it.
The alarm clock part works great too. I hear someone else complaining that saying "Alexa Alarm off" turns off the alarm. Basically they're complaining that the alarm goes off when you turn it off... Just say "Alexa snooze" and it snoozes through voice command! Of course, you can hit the snooze button too, but I prefer voice commands. There are only 4 alarm sounds but you can also wake to iHeart radio or Spotify.
If power is out when an alarm is set to go off, there is no backup battery. But when power comes back, it will reconnect to the internet and get all your settings back. I'm not sure if a previous alarm will then go off or not--I need to test it some to see. The alarm settings are stored on the device, so alarms will go off if wifi disconnects but power stays. You can't change the alarm settings if wifi or internet are down.
There are some disconnects between iHome and Alexa. For instance, you can set the physical sleep button on the alarm to turn off your iHome smart switches through the iHome app, but you can't set the physical button to interact with Alexa. If my bedroom lamp is plugged into an iHome smart witch I can turn it off with a button, but if my bedroom lamp is plugged into a belkin smart switch I can't turn it off with a physical button. You can still say "Alexa turn off bedroom lamp" with either the iHome switch or the Belkin switch (if they're connected to Alexa). Another oddity is that if you connect with bluetooth to this device and use Alexa, you have to hit the bluetooth button to switch back to bluetooth. I don't really use bluetooth nor do I want to use physical buttons to turn off my lights. So neither of these matter to me.
I do love the display. I like seeing the time, weather, and next alarm on the face of this. My wife things the color bar is pretty cool. You can change the color or colors of the bottom bar, but not the clock face. We have the bottom bar set to a rainbow of colors.
Overall this has worked awesome. It's like the next generation of clock radio. It's not cheap, but it has a lot of features. I prefer this over an echo in the bedroom and I think it sounds better. I completely suggest this! It's really cool!
1) Everything arrived damage free, and all seemed to be in order. I downloaded the iHome AVS app to my Galaxy Note 8 and started the set up process. It announced that it had successfully connected to WiFi, but that is where all progress stopped.
2) Having some experience configuring iHome smart outlets, and knowing they can be more finicky with certain devices, I tried to repeat the process using my Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet after doing a factory reset on the iAVS16 just to make sure I was starting from scratch, same results.
3) I repeated the same using a Kyocera Duraforce Pro, same results.
4) I decided to test where the failure was happening, so I put the Kyocera phone in Hotspot mode, joined my Galaxy Note 8 to that network, and tried to repeat the setup process.... IT WORKED! But now it's relying on my leaving a phone at home and not being able to use half of the functions because it is on a separate network. While I had this configuration working I decided to check if there were any firmware updates available, and there were. I applied the firmware update and checked again to make absolutely sure I now had the most current firmware.
5) I repeat the process over again now that I am on the most current FW, hoping that the update cured the problem. No dice, exact same results as before.
6) I contemplate throwing this $150 aggravation out the window.
7) I used a Mac Mini with a wired ethernet connection to create another hotspot that is piggybacked to my LAN. Connect my Note 8 to that access point, and lather/rinse/repeat. Low and behold, it connects no problem. At this point I am just glad that I have it functional enough to use the alarm clock functions to get up for work this morning. This still isn't a solution though since I now have to have a computer running all the time just to make my alarm clock work, and there is still some headaches and broken functions since I have to switch my phone to the 2nd AP to be able to connect to the unit with the iHome app, and can't use it as a WiFi speaker unless I am on the 2nd AP long enough for Spotify to rediscover the iAVS16, so that is basically useless.
Notes:
* My router is the Verizon FiOS Quantum Gateway.
* I reset the router between attempts, easier to add here than to edit and renumber the steps above.
* I had already previously disabled 5Ghz WiFi on my router because of issues it was causing with my Echo Dot and my existing iHome smart outlets.
* My network flawlessly supports Windows PCs, Macs, Linux PCs, Apple iOS devices, Android Devices, an Amazon Echo Dot, iHome smart outlets, multiple Raspberry Pis, multiple gaming consoles, and two Roku devices. I sincerely doubt that the issue is with my router or any issues would have already reared their heads with one of the many types of devices I am already supporting.
* After the iAVS16 verbally says that it has connected to WiFi, I can verify on the router that it has indeed pulled a valid IP address, but the clock is not able to communicate with any of the sources it needs.
Timeline:
11/22/17 - Placed order with Amazon
11/25/17 - Package delivered and setup attempted ad nauseam
11/25/17 - Try calling iHome support, closed from 4pm 11/22 to 8am 11/27
11/25/17 - Email support
11/27/17 - Call support again - Customer service unable to help, forwards my call to "a tech". Call goes to voicemail. Awaiting call back.
11/28/17 - Clock behaving worse than before. I am beginning to agree with the woman I spoke to on the phone yesterday that this unit may just be defective... Tried calling customer service 800# again, multiple times from 10a-10:15a eastern just to get a recording stating that they are closed and their hours are from 8a-4:15p eastern monday-friday to call back during that time, puzzling since it is definitely within that time frame. iHome, I have more than a few of your products, this isn't what I would expect from a company with your exposure.
11/28/17 - Got through to iHome's customer service 800# at 11am eastern, apparently there were phone difficulties on their end. Customer service agreed to have the item shipped back to them with pre-paid shipping label, but said turnaround would be approximately two weeks. Currently investigating return through Amazon for faster turnaround.
11/28/17 - Contacted Amazon, they suggested buying another one at my expense and filing for a refund for this one because it was sold by a 3rd party and fulfilled by Amazon, that they couldn't remedy the problem because it wasn't sold by them.
11/28/17 - Contacted Seller, they told me I had to handle it through Amazon because it was fulfilled by them...
11/28/17 - Possible aneurysm, this should not be this difficult.
11/28/17 - Order refunded by Amazon. This is why I love Amazon.
This alarm clock initially had some software problems, but once I put in a help ticket issues were quickly fixed. iHome has an 1-800 number that you can call during the day. I had no problems with their technical support.
Likes:
Has everything that I wanted in an alarm clock. I can pick any song/playlist from Spotify to wake up to or any station from iHeartRadio. There is no need for AM/FM radio when you can stream any music. It has a nice fast charging USB plug in the back. I particularly enjoy the light gently turning on 10 minutes before the alarm goes off. The programmable buttons on the top can be assigned to music streaming or to control any iHome smart devices such as bedroom light switches. Pairing all this with Alexa makes programming it a breeze.
Dislikes:
The display is pretty bright even at the lowest brightness setting. I end up turning off the display at night.
Top reviews from other countries
The snooze button is suppose to be on a 9 minute timer, however my unit seems to be faulty in this regard. When the snooze button is used, the actual timer has varied from 30 second to 9 minutes. I have had the alarm go off a 30 seconds, 6 minutes, 2 minutes, 9 minutes, 1 minute, etc. This is very frustrating in the morning.
Music options are not as advertised. The reoccurring alarm needs to be set through the Alexa application, however it cannot use Alexa music selections as an alarm. The music selection requires the Ihome application and is limited to iheart radio (with a reduced selection from the available iheart stations) or spotify premium (requiring ANOTHER application plus a monthly subscription). I'm in Canada and a number of my local stations are on iHeart radio, however these stations are not available on the iHome selection list. For music that is selected, there is no option that I can find to have the songs switch when the alarm is snoozed, so you continue to be woken up to the same song again and again, or manually switch.
Overall, I am extremely disappointed in this product. It does sync up to Alexa, however, it is at the expense of the prime functionality of an alarm clock.
