We need a remote camera to monitor my daughters apartment at school because she came home during Covid-19. Her roommate went home and gave the key to her friend. We wanted to ensure that no one was using the apartment. We needed a camera that was reliable because the apartment is two hours away and we did not want to make multiple trips to reboot it.
I saw this camera and it had two features that make it perfect. The first is that it has a network connection so it does not have to rely in problematic wi-if access. Second, it supports power over Ethernet which allowed me to place it anywhere a Ethernet cable could reach. When mounting cameras, need access to power can limit your options. PoE is simple and very advantages. I was really happy to find that the camera included the PoE adapter.
I was able to plug this in and have it up and running in a few minutes. Mounting is easy and it has the customary Ring locking security but with a plastic cover to hide it. This keeps the network cable from being detached without unmounting the camera. This is not a full-proof option but it will definitely slow someone down and probably prevent someone from just trying to disconnect it.
I have had this camera mounted and running straight now for 3 months and the picture and stability is amazing. I haven’t had a singles issue with it. It has done its job detecting people as they have entered the apartment (so far only maintenance people).
There camera has a hefty price tag but it is worth every penny if you need a reliable security camera backed with great software.
Plus if you have a bunch of these you don’t want them to big down your WiFi with tons of camera uploads. Ring also has the best subscription plan compared to other alternatives. It’s only $10/month for unlimited cameras. The cameras cost more up front, but you save money on the long run with the subscription. I also use the ring security system for work and home and professional monitoring is included with that subscription as well. Great quality and value. I wish these would come back in stock. I need to buy at least 4 more. I hope this long out of stock period doesn’t mean they are discontinued.
-Easy to set up
-Part of an excellent product ecosystem, products work together perfectly
-Has all the features you want
-Weatherproof
CONS:
-Two way loudspeaker volume is a joke if you install it higher than head height. Siren is loud enough to notice but not loud enough to scare anyone. Talking function is quiet enough for the person to have to walk closer and go "huh?" even if you are yelling into your app. I look forward to future models having more output volume.
-Decent picture quality, but not great. You'd think for this price tag the picture quality would be top-notch. Has nothing to do with our internet; we have ours wired PoE to a ridiculously strong and expensive PoE box.
Bottom line:
I like the product enough to buy future models that have more output volume and better picture quality, but this model is just "OK". It warrants the price. I know there are better systems that are quadruple the price but this does enough. I'd give it 4.5 stars honestly but Amazon doesn't allow for half stars.
Installation was super easy. Camera worked fine out of the box too. I’d say the only thing I don’t like is the camera mount doesn’t have a way to mount it over the hole for the wire. It would look much cleaner if they had a mount where the cat6 came out the hole and through the mount into the camera, not to the side. But otherwise great.
If familiar with other Ring products the app and setup are the same and smooth. Very easy to adjust motion detection areas and even schedule times where not as sensitive.
I used a Netgear 8 port POE switch (model (GS108PP). When setting it up I originally had my fiber optic internet going to POE router then one of the outs was going to my wifi router (TP link mesh router). In this order the camera wasn’t seeing my network. Switched it to internet to wifi to POE and it instantly started to work.
